Part 1

Context: As a Daughter of Shade, you have trained your entire life to fight even the strongest opponents. Even gods. Today, however, the Shogun has paid an exorbitant price to have you guard him against a monster ravaging the nobility and countryside. A monster wearing the face of an Oni and speaking a strange language. You don't know what he is. Simply that he needs not be anymore. Until you were betrayed by your Shogun. Now, you may very well need this 'monster' to claim your revenge.

[S] = The Shogun

[J] = Jotun, a crazed monstrosity ravaging Japan

[Scene opens within a dark room in the Shogun’s manor]

[SFX: Ropes straining]

[You and Jotun are tied together while both of you take turns seething]

[J] “Fucking… COWARD!”

[Pause!]

[J] “Oh, I will happily join you in pulling his spine out! COME DOWN AND FIGHT US, YOU WOULD-BE SPINELESS COWARD!”

[Pause!]

[He growls under his breath]

[J] “If I could just… get to my sword! Rrgh, but they took it… What about you, Shadow? Any tricks up your sleeves?”

[...]

[J] “Light? You need light?”

[...]

[SFX: Him struggling and shifting a bit]

[J] “The moon is out… if we could just…!”

[...]

[J, with a grunt] “Lean into me.”

[...?]

[J] “The moon is hitting my mask. It’s not much light, but perhaps it is? You said you needed to cast shadows.”

[Pause!]

[He makes an oddly cute noise]

[J] “...I… thank you for calling me intelligent… Hrrgh, there! Does that work?”

[Pause!]

[SFX: The Listener shifting and struggling]

[J] “Oh, you are making a shadow puppet for… a dog? Forgiveness, but is now really the time?”

[SFX: A lot of angry doggos]

[He tenses as the shadows erupt with the smoky visage of a pack of wolves]

[J] “Shadow wolves!”

[He throws out another crazed laugh as the dogs chew through the ropes]

[J] “Good beasts, chewing through our ropes! Come, Shadow, let us take back our dignity and honor!”

[SFX: General chaos, fighting noises, and ravenous wolves]

[Together, you two tear out of the room and storm the manor. He’s with you every step]

[J] “Here, your blade!”

[He tosses it to you and grabs his own sword]

[J] “Now… let us cut down all in our way!”

[SFX: Sword combat]

[You two are in perfect sync, so much so that it takes you a moment to realize he’s still his own entity]

[J] “We move as one! We…? We are…?”

[You turn to look at him out of the corner of your eye. He’s looking at you, in similar awe]

[J] “I… You make a song as you move, Shadow! We are in perfect harmony!”

[Pause!]

[J] “Turn!”

[You do and he catches the blade that nearly bisected you. You deflect the blade that had come at him mere seconds later]

[J] “Perfect! You are perfect at this, I did not even need to warn you that a blade was coming at either of us. Lead! I will follow!”

[Though it is odd, you do almost hear what he means. A beat that moves you both in sync]

[J] “Brace!”

[SFX: Swords being blocked by wood]

“Turn!”

[SFX: General fighting and blades being blocked]

[J] “There, the light is reflecting on that one’s helm!”

[You make a shadow dog in the dim light and your faithful servants erupt from the darkness once more]

[SFX: Angry doggos and panicked non-doggos]

[J] “Now, we break FREE!”

[You both knock your attackers back into the ravenous packs and rush toward the temple]

[J] “Shadow, look! To the top floor!”

[He points and you briefly see the Shogun’s panicked face before he flees]

[J] “There, the Shogun! The fool really didn’t expect this?! Then let us reward his foolishness. Do you wish me to throw you?!”

[Pause]

[J] “I throw you toward the window and then cut down the bottom floors! We meet in the middle, then we’ll leave. Together. Yes?”

[...]

[You really can’t believe you’re considering this, but… this is personal]

[J] “Haha, YES! Forgive me for needing to put my hands where they need to go!”

[He picks you up, gives a crazed laugh, and tosses you right at the window]

[J] “I will see you soon, friend!”

[SFX: A loud crash and people gasping/screaming]

[You land and quickly roll to your feet, face-to-face with those guarding your betrayer]

[S] “Hold! You are still under my command until your contract ends!”

[Pause!]

[S] “Oh, the contract does not end if I betray you, Child of Shade. I am still your Shogun, and you are still servants under my beck and call. Do you understand as such?!”

[SFX: Muffled cries of alarm]

[S] “What?! That monstrosity still lives?!”

[Jotun laughs maniacally below. You slip through the Shogun’s protectors and grab him by the neck]

[S] “You hhk-idiots! Help me!”

[SFX: Bodies hitting the floor]

[S] “...You truly are a demon… But so worth the effort to take you for myself… I prayed to the gods so you might surrender yourself to my desires… but it appears that will not happen until you let go of that monster!”

[Pause!?]

[S] “You must let go of your life debt to him! I have explosives set up beneath in hopes of destroying you if you disobeyed, and it will detonate at any moment! You have to let him die now, no matter what your instincts tell you! When that is done, we can talk… I will show you why you should give yourself to me. Just give it ten m- SHADOW!”

[SFX: The Listener racing downstairs]

[Jotun appears to be having a blast even with multiple people trying to stab him]

[J] “Shadow! Done so soon? Ha, well I certainly feel outclassed!”

[SFX: Dark magic shenanigans]

[J] “Oh, a portal? But why-?”

[He lets out a grunt as you push into it and quickly follow. It lets you out a fair distance from the Shogun’s manor]

[J] “Rrgh! What, why did you teleport out here?! We almost had them beaten!”

[SFX: A slightly distant explosion]

[You shoot him a look and, as best as you can tell, he’s staring at the explosion]

[J] “...Oh.”

[Pause]

[J] “...You saved my life.”

[Pause]

[J] “Owed me? Nngh, I see… Could I ask another favor of you, beautiful Shadow?”

[...?]

[J] “Could you help me stand, please? This broken rib is making it a little hard.”

[Pause…]

[He grunts as you help him up]

[J] “My thanks. I will look for a quiet place to pass once my body gives out at last. If fortune is kind, my sword will find that coward’s throat first!”

[...]

[He pauses as you rest a hand on his side]

[SFX: Magic shenanigans]

[J] “Ah! Ah…? Healing magic? For me?”

[Pause]

[J] “Come with you? Are… you certain, my intense friend?”

[Pause]

[Though you can’t see his face, excitement courses through his voice]

[J] “YES! Then we shall seek our vengeance together! I am yours to command, my Shadow.”

[Pause…?]

[He’s oddly cheerful as he answers your question with a simple:]

[J] “Why? Because we are in sync, and I know you will not lead me astray.”

[...]

[SFX: A pair of footsteps heading quickly to the forest]
