Context: No one knew what to make of Rex when he showed up at your school. He's a cold, mean delinquent covered in tattoos. He has no issue laying anyone out who messes with him, and there is a running comment in school: Rex means King, and he is the King of being terrifying. Still, he's never hurt you. He's made you sit on his lap, he's flustered you, he's always got an insult or two but, tonight, he stood up to a wild animal for you after the school trip bus forgot you both. He took a blow to the head and now you are alone with him, praying for rescue while your bully slowly lost consciousness in your arms. He was saved, and told you to stay away... only to decide you're his, now. But... you can't be his forever... It's time. But...maybe...?

[SFX: The quiet beauty of the forest ambiance]

[Rex stares up at you in stunned silence, tears welling in his eyes]

“P…Poppy…”

[Pause]

“...You’re an… I don’t understand…? H-How are you an angel…?”

[...]

[SFX: Reality bending and warbling]

“W-What…? Wait, that’s us… The night of the bear attack. What…? What’s happening?!”

[...]

[You both watch the scene play out, this time… it’s the truth]

What the fuck, why are you out here? I’m trying to get in a smoke! Hey… Hey! Are you fucking crazy?! The hell are you doing tackling me?!

[SFX: The bear attacking]

H-Hey! NO! Fuck, FUCK, why did you do that?! W-Wait, I have bear spray!

[SFX: A bear being sprayed with bear spray and lumbering off]

It’s gone! Y-You’re OK, right? R-Right…? No no no no, that’s… there’s so much blood… H-Hey! HELP! SOMEBODY, PLEASE! PLEASE!!! H-Hang on, hang on, c’mon… I’ll get you to the bus, you’re gonna be OK!

[SFX: Rex running with Poppy through the forest]

W-What?! Where’s the fucking bus?!?! No no no no, c’mon, c’mon they wouldn’t leave us like…!

[Pause]

Hey hey hey, no… C’mon, no, it’s OK! I swear, it’s OK! You’re going to be fine, you… idiotic little reckless twerp!

[Pause]

A-Ah, it’s OK, I’ll get you to the side of the road and we’ll flag someone down and it’s going to be OK, just keep those beautiful eyes open, keep talking, and it’ll be fine! PLEASE! I need to tell you that I love you!!!

[SFX: Reality warbling]

[Rex watches the past play out, tears running down his face]

“No… Y-You… you took the hit from the bear f-for… for me? Christ, I… why don’t I remember it that way?”

[Pause]

“...You died… in my arms…”

[Pause]

[He breaks in your arms, sobbing]

“Fuck… that’s right… you were the one that came looking for me… I-I remember… You came to find me, I had snuck off to get a smoke, and you… you took the hit from the bear. I held you… and told you everything I did that night, everything I said while you held my head in your lap in the first iteration… a-and you smiled up at me and told me… “It’s going to be OK”. I remember… your eyes were so glassy, so pained, but you kept smiling at me, kept squeezing my hand while I tried to flag down help. I kept begging for you to stay with me and you just kept whispering “It’s going to be OK”, over and over, u-until… until… you stopped talking…”

[Pause]

[You rub his back gently as his memories correct themselves]

“Why…? Why did you…?”

[Pause]

“...You loved me… even then. A-And you didn’t want to fail me… Then, what has all of this been? All of our time together? Are… are you even real or am I going crazy?”

[Pause]

[He lets out a shaky sigh]

“...So you have been with me. This has been real… You wanted to help me get to a better place before you had to go. But, what about those nightmares? Or… visions?”

[...]

“You can’t explain them…? I… whatever, it doesn’t matter. They’ve always warned me of disaster, specifically involving YOU! You’ve nearly died so many times, I-!”

[...]

“...That was… That was the universe trying to take you back because it felt I didn’t need you anymore? B-But, then… That means I changed your fate, somehow…”

[...]

“N-No! No, you CAN’T go now! I still need you! I’ll always need you, Poppy! I’m not ready to let you go! No, this isn’t fair! You’re the purest person I’ve ever known, how is it FUCKING FAIR that you were the one to die that night?! I… I could have taken the hit and lived, but… but…”

[He cries out in frustration, punching the ground]

“This is BULLSHIT! Do you hear me?! Whatever god is up there watching this sick shit, come down and fucking FIGHT ME RIGHT NOW! They deserved to live, not me!”

[Pause]

[He eases, shaking in your arms so violently that he can’t catch his breath]

“Don’t… Don’t say it’s time for you to go..”

[Pause]

“No! I don’t… I don’t want to go forward without you, I don’t care if my future is fucking perfect! It can’t be without you!”

[Pause]

[Your wings slowly begin to fall away]

“No… No!”

[He scrambles forward and wraps his arms around you]

“No! P-Please! P…Please… Don’t leave me…!”

[Pause]

[He breaks down, sobbing harder]

“I know you’ve worked your ass off to give me this future, this… this wonderful, bright future, but I’d rather be stuck in that shitty city, I’d rather have my Mom give up on me, I’d rather have my Dad beat me every fucking day than lose you!”

[...]

[He looks down at you, inconsolable]

“I do mean it! I’d rather have you than any kind of future, what… what kind of life could I ever have without you? You’re the love of my life!”

[...]

[SFX: Gentle wind chimes]

“...Please. Please, if… if I can’t have you here, then please just fucking take me with you! I… I don’t… I don’t want to live if I can’t…”

[You reach up and gently cup his jaw. He leans into your touch, sobbing]

“Please…”

[Pause]

“H-Huh?”

[Pause]

“If… If I want that, there’s a chance I won’t remember any of this…? There’s a chance… we might not end up together…?”

[Pause]

[He doesn’t hesitate, not even for a second]

“Do it.”

[Pause…?]

“Poppy… You deserve another chance at life. Even if we don’t end up together, even if I forget, I don’t care. I just want you to be happy. To have a future. You… y-you fucking gave EVERYTHING to give me one.”

[SFX: Gentle wind chimes picking up]

“...Your wings…”

[Your wings begin to come apart, feathers wafting gently in the breeze]

“God… you’re beautif- achk!”

[He coughs, spitting a feather out]

“Pfeh! Feather in mouth… Great. Great way to punctuate this moment, hm?”

[You hold him. He holds you, shaking]

“...Promise me you’ll come back. Please…”

[Pause]

[He exhales shakily]

“...I love you, Poppy…”

[SFX: Reality warbling and shifting back to that fateful night]

[Scene transitions back to the clearing of that fateful night]

[You’re lost in the forest, searching for Rex, when you realize you’re being stalked. A black bear stares you down, teeth showing]

[SFX: Upset bear noises]

[Before you can even blink, heavy footsteps bound toward you, and a large boy sprints between you and the bear, screaming bloody murder]

“GET AWAY FROM THEM, YOU GRIZZLY COSPLAYING BITCH!”

[He goes a bit overboard with the bear spray]

[SFX: Confused bear grumbles]

[The bear backs off after a bit, and you’re left with the massive delinquent, cowering. He pants wildly before he turns and scoops you up into a hug]

“...I have you…God, I have you. I-I… I’m so fucking glad…”

[Pause???]

[You’re confused as tears run down his cheeks but hug him back]

[SFX: Forest ambiance/gentle wind chimes]

“...Hey.”

[Pause]

[He pulls you away enough that he can look into your eyes]

“...I think I love you.”

[Your heart hitches as he pulls you into a kiss that makes your head spin. The moment he parts, he whispers:]

“And I’m going to fucking marry you. OK?”

[You look at him, unsure what to say. You nod, and he holds you to him]

“...C’mon. Let’s get back before the bus leaves. You’re mine, now, and I’m never letting you go… Not ever, ever again.”

[You didn’t expect the night to go that way… or understand why Rex is nearly in tears. But you comfort him as best you can, still not fully able to comprehend that he basically just proposed to you]
