Context: As a Daughter of Shade, you have trained your entire life to fight even the strongest opponents. Even gods. Today, however, the Shogun has paid an exorbitant price to have you guard him against a monster ravaging the nobility and countryside. A monster wearing the face of an Oni and speaking a strange language. You don't know what he is. Simply that he needs not be anymore.

[S] = The Shogun

[J] = Jotun, a crazed monstrosity ravaging Japan

[Scene opens within the Shogun’s quarters]

[SFX: Shadow shenanigans]

[You move from the shadows and the Shogun twitches]

[S] “There you are, Daughter of Shade… I was beginning to think the reputation that comes with your price tag was unwarranted. I would offer you polite company but we have no time. My scouts have reported seeing the Monster making his way here.”

[Pause?]

[S, with a sigh] “No… No one can get close enough to him to understand what he is. They’ve tried taking down notes of the insane nonsense he mutters under his breath. Here, see for yourself.”

[SFX: A scroll being unfurled]

[You scan over the words but they don’t make sense to you either. You try to taste them and they taste rough on your tongue]

[S] “No clue either, hm? Didn’t think so… This… abomination is impossible. He stands as tall as an Oni and just as vicious, but the hair from under his helm is a strange pale yellow. Any sighting of his skin shows that it's pale as well.”

[Pause]

[S] “Listen to me, Daughter of Shade… I am well aware that every woman in your family is trained to kill gods if need be, but there are things outside of gods and demons. Things that cannot see or refuse reason. Things that simply want to destroy for the sake of destruction. That creature has felled countless warriors. He’s tracked down other lords of Japan and, now, I suspect he is coming for me.”

[Pause]

[The Shogun sighs and stands]

[S] “Yes, I do believe it is time for me to evacuate to a safe place.”

[SFX: A warning horn]

[S] “Good luck, Daughter of Shade. May you put fear in that monster’s heart such that he retreats to whatever underworld pleases him.”

[Pause]

[SFX: People evacuating]

[You vanish into the shadows and watch this supposed monstrosity approach]

[J, distantly] “SHO…GUN…!!”

[Pause…]

[The monster lumbers through the now quiet home of the Shogun, a massive sword dragging behind him]

[J] “...Sho…gun…”

[Pause…]

[J] “Show… yourself…! Face me, Kujon!”

[The pale moonlight catches a brief flash of an ice-blue eye in the hole of the Oni mask he wears]

[SFX: The sword crashing violently through a wall and a woman screaming]

[The creature slams his sword through a door and you’re horrified to see a young woman cowering behind it. You aim to move but the intruder does nothing but look at her]

[J] “...Woman. No… Not fight. Not arm..ed…”

[Pause]

[SFX: Shadow shenanigans]

[You meld back into the shadows and position yourself behind him, ready to strike. The beast pauses, head tilting toward you slightly]

[J] “...Hear you…”

[Pause]

[J, with a wild laugh] “YES! A real fight! Fight me, Shadow Beauty… Come at me!”

[You oblige him, bursting from the opposite side and engaging him. Even with such a large weapon, he’s surprisingly fast]

[J] “There! Blow for blow!”

[SFX: Blades and blows being exchanged]

[J] “Yes, yes, you move beautifully, Shadow! Look at how we dance together!”

[SFX: More blades crossing]

[J] “Ahh, you’re magic, like the others! Fading into the shadows… Yes… Back away, and plan your next attack! Yes, yes, I can wait… I want more of this! I want to feel alive again!”

[SFX: Shadow shenanigans]

[You survey this strange creature as his eyes track you. He seems eerily aware of where you are]

[J] “You are like nokken! Shifting and dancing in the shadows like the water spirits back home! Face me, for honor! I will triumph and take home your song to my brothers and sisters!”

[Pause]

[He turns as you utter a tiny, confused noise]

[J] “THERE YOU ARE, BEAUTY!”

[SFX: The sword slamming through wood]

[You duck the blow though splinters rain down on you]

[SFX: Some quick blows and the “monster” crying out in pain]

[J] “HNH! Aha… haha… HAHAHAHAA! YES! GODS, YES, finally! Rrgh, break another rib, Shadow Beauty! Put me in the ground!”

[SFX: The Oni helm being knocked to the ground]

[You give him a quick uppercut and the helm flies off. He stumbles back, hiding his face]

[J] “No! No… don’t look at me! Please! I’m not worthy, yet!”

[Pause]

[You know you should go in for the kill but…]

[J, whimpering] “I have to be worthy… I want to go home but I have to prove I am worthy first…”

[...]

[You retrieve the helm and approach him. He towers over you, body muscled and massive, and those piercing blue eyes peer through his fingertips]

[J] “...My face…”

[Pause]

[J] “N-No, I… I can’t show you my face…”

[Pause?]

[J] “What if… you close your eyes…? Nnh… løfte?”

[Pause???]

[J] “It… means… ‘promise’? Do you promise that you won’t look?”

[Pause]

[J] “Yes. I promise… I won’t attack you…”

[...]

[You shut your eyes and hold up the helm, bracing for betrayal and retaliation. But…]

[SFX: The helm being taken gently and placed on the Speaker’s head]

[J] “...I have my face again. Thank… you.”

[Pause]

[You open your eyes and the two of you stare at each other, uncertain]

[...?]

[J] “Hnh? Why do I… attack… lords? To prove I am worthy. My brothers and sisters fought to end tyrants before we came here. The haughty must be brought to kneel! Once I have made them bow, then… I go home.”

[Pause?]

[J] “What… am… I? I am Jotun! And… you, Shadow Beauty?”

[...]

[J] “Daughter of… Shade. Ah. We have women like you. We call them Valkyries. They ride on winged horses, serve the gods, and take heroes to an honorable afterlife.”

[Pause]

[Jotun lets out a laugh that almost makes the ground rumble]

[J] “HA! The Shadow Beauty KILLS gods, not serves them! You are the best fight I’ve ever had, even among my own people. You… dance. You dance with blades, eyes sharp, fearless. Perhaps, when I defeat you… I will be worthy.”

[SFX: The sword being lifted again]

[J] “Thank you… Either way, I will know home! Thank you for your mercy…”

[Pause]

[You poise to continue the fight when:]

[S] “Now!”

[SFX: A trap being sprung]

[Chaos breaks out as nets are thrown over the two of you. You try and cut your way free but something blocks your magic. Jotun struggles as well]

[J] “COWARDS! You send a concubine of Death itself to show me your strength and then DARE to betray her?!”

[Pause!!]

[The Shogun looks at you coldly]

[S] “Make sure they both are contained… A pair of unkillable monstrosities will serve the shogunate well. Go on, knock them out.”

[Pause!!]

[SFX: Gas being released and Jotun coughing violently]

[J] “Gghk… Beauty…! I will… protect…!”

[You’re astonished that he can still move but he does manage to curl around you as the gas knocks both of you out]

[J] “...Don’t… Do not be afraid… I am… I am here…”

[You pass out]
