[Scene opens in the manor]

[SFX: Fabric shuffling around]

[You stand poised while the tailors and seamstresses let you try on all sorts of outfits, when-]

[SFX: A heavy knock]

“X! All of you, out please, I need to speak with my spouse.”

[SFX: The staff hurrying out]

[Tristan trudges in around them and sits on the bed beside you]

“Yes, dear, you look very nice. Oh, don’t pout at me. No matter how hot and heavy things get between us, this is a business relationship, and we need to handle things.”

[Pause]

“Aye… I highly doubt the King or Queen are going to willingly hand themselves over to your lord… I’ll be honest with you, X, I’m not one for conniving or subterfuge. I have big weapons that I use to squish small things. Not exactly a strategy that’s going to convince anyone…”

[He sighs, grumbling like a grizzly bear as you play with his thick curls]

“You’re so alien… Then again, I guess we must be the same to you, hm? You… Xryl? Am I saying it right?”

[Pause]

“Right, sorry. “Zuh-reel”. I still don’t fully know what you are, you know. Avunchziel said something about water spirits?”

[Long Pause]

[You do your best to explain while squishing his face a little]

“O-K, so… you’re from another place, outside of this place, where there are people like you that can shapeshift as they please. But, for your kind specifically, you get overwhelmed by a sense that you’re falling apart and have to consume mass in order to stay alive… Gods above, I’m sorry, love. Is there anything that can heal that psychosis?”

[You shake your head but thank him for caring enough to ask]

“Mmh… Wait, hold on.”

[He sits up, studying you]

“Can… you shapeshift?”

[SFX: Bones and skin sliding about (don’t blame you if you ignore this one, lol)]

[Tristan stares at you or, rather, himself]

“You just… transformed to look like me…? And stop making kissy faces at me! Believe it or not, I’m not a narcissist!”

[Pause?]

“What? No, I don’t want you to change all the time, you look beautiful as you are.”

[Pause<3]

[Your husband rolls his eyes, good-natured]

“Yes, I called you beautiful, now will you please focus on the task at hand? We may be able to use that to our advantage to get the King and Queen out of the way… Gruesome as it is.”

[Pause?]

“Do I like either of them? Pfft, no. No one does. They’re incompetent AND self-righteous. A horrible combination, if ever there was one.”

[Pause?]

“Who would take over if they both fell? Mmh, probably a noble of some kind. They don’t have children. It’s been a pain point between the two, and they’ve taken to extramarital affairs to try and solve it. Foul… At least have the respect to divorce first.”

[Pause]

“Hm? Oh, I had a girl pull that on me when I was younger. Absolutely crushed me at the time but I hear she’s miserable, so that works, I suppose.”

[Pause]

[He snorts]

“Aye, well, maybe I am a bit petty… It’s odd how much I trust you, X. Like I said, you’re almost entirely alien to us, but all you’ve done thus far is wanting to have pretty clothes made for you…”

[He looks at you as you change back]

“...They do look good on you. Not so much on your version of me, but I don’t have the hips for it, hmhm… Are your kind capable of bearing children?”

[Pause]

“Really? Even the male ones?”

[Pause]

[His cheeks turn bright red]

“O-Oh, uh… The shapeshifting, right. Didn’t realize you could change your whole system like that. Is there anything you don’t like transforming into?”

[Pause]

“Small things? Ah, cause of the psychosis, right… Come here for a second, if you would.”

[You flop on his big ol’ chest and he puts a hand over the back of your head]

“...You know, I’ve never really felt all that human either. Given my size, people are usually frightened of me… It’s a lonely existence, wanting to try human things but having actual humans in the way, ruining shit for you… I know my brothers and sisters in arms, I know they’re good people and only care about honor and dependability. The King and Queen don’t care about any of them… They think they’re better, above humanity, when their petulant whining is more human than anything… Humanity should be defined by altruism, not wealth or riches.”

[Pause?]

“Altruism? It’s, um, basically doing good for the sake of doing good without expecting anything in return.”

[Pause]

“Hmhm, like that idea, do you? That’s cute. You want to be a hero, hm?”

[Pause!]

“True, true, you already are. The kingdom has celebrated the “Wendigo” that so greatly loved their husband and kingdom that they brought back a whole army.”

[Pause?]

“Yes, that is why they sent all those gold and gems. That’s for you, I won’t touch it.”

[...]

“Hmm? What should you do with it? Hrmph, whatever you want, we have enough.”

[You ponder while his heart beats under your ear]

[Pause!]

“You want to… altruism? Uh… How so, love?”

[Pause]

“Giving it away to people who do need it? Pfft, we’re doing that old story, aye? Hmhm, I swear… Whatever you want to do, love, I won’t stop you. Mmh!”

[You give him a big smooch and he rumbles but returns it]

“...Damn. Am I really falling for a supernatural creature?”

“Mmh… After the first Crusade, humans and monsters don’t exactly get on super well. Least not around these parts. Ah, who cares… Five years of marriage to find out, yeah?”

[Pause]

“Aye aye, I know we’ll figure something out… And you do with your money what you want, love. Right now, all I want is a good nap.”

[Pause?]

[He snorts a little, eyes hidden under his arm]

“Of course you can join me. You’re my spouse… strange as that is. Here, let me grab the blanket.”

[SFX: A heavy comforter being dragged across the bed]

"Goodnight, X. Love ya."
