“... I’m here like you asked. And I’m armed, so don’t try anything.”

[pause]

“Hah! Trust you? We’ve been at each other’s throats for years– literally, in your case– and now we’re supposed to trust each other on shady things like this? I agreed on a truce, but that doesn’t mean that I’m not on guard.”

[pause]

“... Glad that’s another thing we agree on…”

“Now, what did you want to show me?”

[pause]

“You captured one?”

[pause]

“Oh. Infected already? All you did was tie them down and wait?”

[pause]

“No, I wouldn’t call it cruel.”

[pause]

“And yet... you look upset about it. That’s an expression I’ve never seen on you before.”

[pause]

“What? Your brother?”

“Vampires can have siblings? You’re trying to find a cure?!”

[pause]

“What do you mean? Of course I’m shocked! Aren’t vampires creatures of darkness or something?”

[pause]

“... Oh right. Vampires can turn humans.”

[short pause]

“Wait a minute. You were human?!”

[pause]

“You’re only powerful because an original vampire turned you?! Wha– but–!”

[pause]

“N-No I’m not getting hesitant to hurt you now that I know about this! You’re still a vampire, one who’s killed many of my allies!”

[pause]

“What do you mean that’s what you like about me?! If you’re trying to get me to lower my guard, it’s not going to work!”

[pause]

“Don’t get cocky. I still don’t trust you in the slightest. Now let’s get going already; I don’t want my guild members to start questioning where I’m getting all this intel from.”

[sounds of walking through the underbrush]

“Of course I haven’t told my guildmates about our little cooperation. They know about our rivalry, and they would trust you even less, and that’s saying something.”

“The only reason why I haven’t cut your head off yet is because we owe each other one. And again, you have intel I need. My guildmates are too impulsive to recognize how valuable you are.”

[pause]

“That wasn’t a compliment!”

[pause]

“Oh ha ha, you think I’m blushing. Your flirting isn’t going to work on me, bloodsucker. I thought you’d know better.”

[pause]

“What’s that supposed to mean? I’m hunting you because you’re a vampire, nothing more, nothing less.”

[pause]

“Wha– I’m not obsessed with you!”

“Quit laughing!”

[pause]

“Ugh… cocky overgrown bat…”

[footsteps stop]

“This old graveyard? I thought it was abandoned centuries ago. There haven’t even been any records of vampires rising from these graves.”

[pause]

“So once we end our surveillance all of this happens huh… bah, just our luck.”

[footsteps]

“I looked into the things you mentioned, by the way. You were right. There were reports from around a century back about abnormally strong vampires similar to the ones we’re dealing with right now.”

“I noticed from the illustrations of them that they seemed far more beastlike than the one I encountered. But it’s been years, and many of those beasts were fought in the dark. I don’t know how accurate the drawings really were.”

[pause]

“Huh? You think you were around back then?”

[footsteps stop. An iron door is opened]

“You’ll tell me in a bit? Ugh, fine.”

“I guess the actual infected one you have in here is more important at the moment.”

[echoey footsteps on stone]

“God, this place is cold. Couldn’t have chosen somewhere a little warmer? Brr.”

[pause]

“... I’m sorry, what? What do you mean that you *had* to keep him in a cold place?”

[pause]

“Huh… so the infected vampires… seem to revert to a corpse-like state and begin to decay like normal flesh? Wouldn’t that… make them closer to zombies, in that case?”

[pause]

“You’d never thought of that?”

“Pfft! You’ve lived for what, a century or two and you didn’t make a connection as simple as that?”

[pause]

“Alright, alright. I guess you had your own troubles.”

“... God that smells awful. Even zombies don’t smell this bad.”

[fast footsteps]

“Wha– Hey! Where are you going?!” (fading out)

[clanging sound, footsteps stop abruptly]

[footsteps fade in]

“Hey! Why did you run off like that?! What are you–”

[pause]

“... Oh.”

[longer pause]

“... Is it really dead? Just like that?”

“How long did you leave him down here?”

[pause]

“Only for a week? And you’ve been supplying blood to him?”

“Ugh… that barely even looks like a corpse. More like a slime puddle…”

[pause]

“Really? He was mostly intact when you came to visit him yesterday?”

“Strange… how could he have decomposed so quickly? Maybe there’s more behind this whole thing… is it possible that this virus is connected to zombies somehow? From what I remember from my classes, vampires and zombies are technically both undead… in fact, there are more links between them… what could have–”

[pause]

“... Are you crying?”

[pause]

“Oh… oh. A vampire. Crying. Um… uh…”

[pause]

“I mean– yeah. He– he was your brother… I’d– um…”

“... If a brother of mine died, I’d feel the same.”

[pause]

“Hey… come on now, you– you did your best.”

“It couldn’t have been easy to watch him change like that. I know you were hoping to cure him but…”

[long pause]

“No, I… I should probably just stop talking.”

[pause]

“Hey. Don’t give up on me now, okay? I know it hurts. Grief always does.”

“But I’m sure your brother would have liked for you to continue searching for the cause behind this. Make sure his death wasn’t in vain.”

[pause]

“Wha– this again?! I’m only being nice to you because you’re the best source of info I’ve got. There’s nothing else to it!”

“... Sorry. That– that was uncalled for.”

[pause]

“You’re sure it’s fine?”

[pause]

“... Okay.”

“I’ll leave you alone for a while okay? Give you some time.”

“I’ll be just outside. It’s too cold in here for me.”

[pause]

“Alright then.”

[footsteps]

[footsteps pause]

[cloth rustling sound]

“... Don’t get the coat dirty. I’m just…”

[pause]

“Just hold onto it, okay? It’s colder down here than it is up there, and I don’t want you getting sick or something.”

[pause]

“... Oh. Right, vampires don’t…”

“Argh, just take it! And come find me when you’re done!”

[echoey, fast footsteps]

“Geez… what is wrong with me?”
