[Scene opens in, you think, your bedroom]
[SFX: Dishes and glasses rattling]
âHey, pretty girl. You awake?â
[Pause?]
âShh, itâs just your soulmate.â
[...?]
âRoommate. Aww, poor thing, you look like your fever has gotten worse. I brought you some soup and warm tea.â
[Pause]
âYouâre welcome, hon. Letâs take your temperatureâŚâ
[SFX: A thermometer being placed]
âMmh⌠Poor thing. Youâve been feverish for a long time now.â
[Pause]
âNo, no, donât apologize, honey. You get some rest, OK? Iâm gonna move you to the big bed later so we can wash the sheets.â
[Pause]
[You canât see him super well but you think heâs smiling]
âYouâre welcome, sweetie. Go on, rest. Iâll be back later.â
[SFX: Muffled noises of cleaning and furniture]
[...]
**[An unknown amount of time passes]*\*
[SFX: More muffled clicking and moving about]
[...?]
âWell, hey, pretty girl. Welcome back to the realm of the awake. Pretty shitty, isnât it? Hehe.â
[Pause]
âYou donât remember a lot? Not even my name? Aww, thatâs OK, hon. How about we make a little nickname for me thatâs easy for you to remember, hmm? How about⌠Oh, Iâm holding a pen. How about Penn? Does that work OK?â
[Pause]
âMmhm, I am your roommate. Weâve been rooming for over a year now⌠Goodness, you really must be sick. All that memory loss... Donât worry, OK? Pennâs gonna take care of you until youâre all better, OK? After all, we have a date to go on at some point.â
[...?]
âOh, sweetie⌠No, itâs OK. You focus on getting better, I can wait. Iâve got your coursework covered, itâs OK. You take all the time you need. After all, Iâm not going anywhereâŚâ
[Pause]
â...No, no, Iâd never leave you, sweetie. I know youâre having memory problems. What kind of boyfriend would I be if I left you in this state?â
[...]
âGet some rest, baby girl. Itâs OK. Let me feed you some soup. You need to eat.â
[You feel his weight on the bed. You feel the soup slide down your throat. Even his gentle touch moving the hair from your eyes]
âSo sweet⌠I always loved those big, beautiful eyes. Especially when theyâre a little dazed.â
[...?]
[Penn chuckles quietly]
âOh, Iâve seen you looking up at me dazed a few times, love⌠Amazing how strong the chemistry we have is, right?â
[...?]
âBoyfriend? Oh, did I call myself your boyfriend? Is that not OKâŚ? Weâve been dating for a good few months now⌠Oh, but of course you donât remember. Here⌠Let me lie next to you and remind youâŚâ
[SFX: The bed creaking]
âShhh⌠Itâs OK. Feel my weight at your side?â
[...]
âGood girl. Aww, donât look away all embarrassed⌠Sweetie, Iâve kissed your neck plenty of times. Iâve traced my tongue here, mmhm, right along your collarbone⌠Haha, squirmy girl⌠So squirmy! Does it tickle or⌠are you embarrassed because Iâm kissing you like this?â
[...]
[He laughs quietly, breath cold]
âOh, sweetie⌠Embarrassed over having sweat on your neck? I donât mind⌠Iâve never minded. When I cuddle you at night, my body temperature helps keep you cool, and you smile so nicely⌠Itâs nice. Helping you in the bath is nice. Being in the bath with you⌠even nicer.â
[Pause???]
[He pauses next to you, hand gently on your stomach]
âHow long have you been sickâŚ? And⌠how did you get sick? Oh, poor baby. Itâs been a good few months now. You were at school and just collapsed one day right after midterms. You were so stressed⌠I had to come and get you. They wanted to take you to the hospital but⌠you werenât insured. You begged me not to take you, no matter what. So concerned over not being drowned in debt⌠You always were stressed, sweetie.â
[...]
âMmhm. Iâve been taking care of you ever since. Itâs been⌠goodness, almost a year now. Youâre lucky I was there, dearest. Youâre very lucky to have me, I think, hmhm.â
[Pause]
âHmmm? Can you have more soup? Aww, of course. Iâll have to whip up some more for you, though. Itâll take maybe an hour or so to make fresh, OK?â
[Pause]
âAwww, baby, youâre so sweet. I appreciate your appreciation of me and all I do. Now, go ahead and rest. Iâll be back, OK?â
[Pause]
[SFX: Footsteps fading away, then a door opening and closing]
[...]
[You wait until you can hear him in the kitchen and shakily stand, balancing against the wall. Itâs agony, but you make your way to the door, stumbling a few times]
[SFX: A bit of quiet scuffle as the Listener tries to get to the door]
âDarling? I heard a noise, are you OK?â
[Thereâs no time, you hobble to the door and practically collapse against it as you go to lock it]
[SFX: The Listener falling back against the wall and sliding down]
âDarling?!â
[SFX: The lock shakily being turned and the door rattling harshly]
âDARLING! Darling, you shouldnât be out of bed! Youâre sick!â
[SFX: Penn pounding on the door]
âDARLING!!â
[You crawl across the floor and grasp a bundle of clothes, sheets and towels before you force the window open and shove the bundle you made out of it]
[SFX: The window opening and something of significant weight being forced through and hitting the ground]
[He screams as he hears this and you scramble under the bed. The door bursts open and he races across the room and peers out of the window]
âLOVE! Oh god. O-Oh god, they jumped out of the window ⌠No no no NO NO NO NO!! Hang on, baby, hang on!â
[SFX: Penn racing out of the room and the apartment door slamming shut]
[...]
[You shakily reach for your phone and do your best to dial emergency services]
[SFX: A call being made]
[A] â911, whatâs your emerg-â.
[You scream as the mattress is ripped off the frame. Penn grabs the phone from your hand and hurls it against the wall, panting]
âGIVE ME THAT! ⌠Sweetie. That wasnât a nice prank⌠And youâre far too sick to be doing all of this. Iâm very, very, concerned about your cognitive functions, baby! You just tried to jump out a window!â
[He lowers his voice but his eyes remain wide and wild]
âSweetie⌠You know what they do to students who try and⌠hurt themselves, right? Youâll just be locked up in a place where they wonât let you even watch TV. Theyâll think youâre insaneâŚ. You wonât be able to ever, ever leave, baby. Do you really want that? Do you really want to lose all of your freedom and the man that loves you so⌠so so so much?â
[...]
[He eases a little as you begin to sob]
âOh, poor love⌠Câmere, let me pick you up. Itâs OK⌠Iâm sorry I yelled.â
[He picks you up, holding you close]
âYou shouldnât be exerting yourself like that⌠Poor baby. Câmon, letâs get you all nice and snuggly in bed again, OK? I washed the linens.â
[SFX: Him humming and making the bed]
âThere we go⌠And I got you a nice pretty bracelet to help with things. Well, an anklet.â
[You feel cool metal around your ankle and the sound of chains jostling]
[SFX: Handcuffs being put on]
âThere we go⌠All safe. Now, Iâll make you something to eat. Maybe we can move the TV in here and watch some together, OK? I think thatâll go a long way in helping you feel⌠comfortable.â
[...]
âThereâs my sweetheart. Mwah, a little kiss for my baby. Donât worry, weâll work through this rough patch together, OK? Now⌠rest.â
[You lie back, the reality of your situation only ebbed by the drugs in your system, of which you are sure there will be more]
[...]
[You faintly hear him call from the kitchen:]
âLove you!â
[You say it back. Thereâs nothing else you can do]
