Context: An old castle sits in the mountains and happens to be your living abode. As far as the locals know, you're just an elderly woman tending the castle. They tend to leave you be. However, as of late, men from a construction contract have been sending your correspondence demanding the land. You're not sure what to do. All you want right now is for your husband to be by your side as the world closes in.

[Scene opens within a grand castle]

[SFX: Knocking]

[You make your way to the large castle doors and painstakingly open them. A young man in a hard hat greets you]

[C] “Yeah, you the owner of this castle?”

[Pause]

[C] “Your husband? Typical. Right, can I have a word with him? We need to talk about this land and taxes owed on it.”

[Pause…?]

[The man sighs and pinches the bridge of his nose]

[C] “Look, old lady, there are buyers here who want to tear down this castle and build new homes on it. That’s what this is about. That’s what is going to happen unless hubby dearest can prove that he’s got ownership of this castle and the land around it. So, is he in?”

[Pause]

[The man rolls his eyes]

[C] “Resting. Well, you best tell him to get his ass up and about by the time I come back next week, got it? Try not to break a hip. Hm? No, you can’t see the paperwork, and get your damned hands away from my clipboard!”

[He grabs your arm roughly and pushes you back a little]

[C] “I don’t like shoving old ladies around like that, so don’t me fucking do it again. Got it? One week.”

[With that, he turns and marches off]

[SFX: The castle doors closing]

[Your mind drifts back to the night you met your husband, so long ago]

[Note: Italicizing for flashback, all text is “hubby” speaking]

[SFX: Ballroom chatter]

Good evening, miss. I hope I didn’t startle you, I just wanted to make certain you were having a nice time at my little get-together.

[Pause]

Hmhm, I see. Shy. So shy that you’ve come here to alphabetize my books?

[Pause]

No need to be embarrassed… Here, may I help you? Perhaps we can chat a bit to pass the time?

[Pause]

Oh, I know it’s a party… but I saw you hurry from the crowd and just wanted to make certain you were alright. After all, it is a celebration, and celebrations are remarkably wonderful places to potentially meet the love of your life, hm?

[SFX: The Listener walking through the castle]

Mmh… Gods, in all of my years, I’ve never wanted someone so wholly. Your voice, your body, your mind… I know it’s only been a year since we met at that party, but I must have you!

[Pause]

I am saying I want you to be my bride, Sweetling. Til death do us part. Please, please make me the happiest man on this planet, won’t you? All of my castle will be yours as well.

[Pause]

Darling… Darling, you’ve made me so happy! Anything you want for the wedding!

[SFX: The Listener walking more undercut by the sound of an attack / mob]

Gghkk! Agh… L-Love… Love, the hunter… I think that was holy water…

[Pause]

No no, shh, please don’t cry… Please, love… I will heal, I promise but… nnh… it will take a long time, my angel… F-Forgive me, please, I must… I must rest now, but I promise you, I will return to you as soon as I am able…

[Pause]

I promise you, my love. I promise…

[SFX: The Listener walking a bit more before falling to her knees]

[You sit at your husband’s bedside and do all you can think to do - sob]

[SFX: Hubby stirring]

“Hnh…? Who has… made my bride weep?!”

[Pause!]

[He sits up with a groan and does a double take as he sees you]

“Love! Oh, thank the infernal gods you’re alive! I… Oh, Sweetling, why are you weeping?”

[Pause]

[You fall into his arms and sob as he gently rubs your back]

“Sweetling… Shhh, I am here now. I am awake, and recovered from that hunter’s wicked holy water. You need never fear again, alright? Tell me all about it…Tell me what bothers you.”

[He holds you close, stroking your hair as you cry into him]

“My poor love… You’ve waited for me so very patiently, guarded this place, tended our home… And you’ve done so without expecting a word of thanks. Oh, but you are worth all the praise in the world…”

[He takes your hand but pauses as he sees the bruise on your arm. In a moment, his calm demeanor turns ice cold]

“The bruise on your arm… Who has laid hands upon my bride?”

[Pause]

“Oh, I think it is a big deal. There is no living, dead or undead entity that has my permission to lay a hand on you. If it was that construction man, then it will be dealt with. But, first, I think it is time for you to join me, my everything.”

[Pause]

“Oh my poor dove… Did you think I would let you wilt? Or even die at all? No, shh, no… Here, give me a little kiss and then I will go and chat with that foul man. And after that? You will at last be rewarded for your pure, kind heart. Just one kiss, darling.”

[Pause]

“Good girl. Go on, have a nap. From the sounds of it, the little toad will be along shortly.”

[Pause?]

“I’m aware he said a week but I am not a patient man. A little hypnotic power should have him coming right back before too long. Hm? Oh, you’re tired. Aww, sleepy little lamb. Here, go on. Rest. I will be right back.”

[You do as he asks and he heads downstairs. You can vaguely hear him speak to the construction worker]

[SFX: The massive, wooden front doors opening]

[C] “Finally. Alright, look old lady, we came back for the stupid paperwork.”

“Paperwork? Heavens, that must have been such a hassle, young man.”

[C] “Uhh… Do you “live here”, too, sir?”

[Your husband laughs pleasantly]

“Well, in a manner of speaking. I am curious, sir - the “old lady” you referred to… Did you mean my wife?”

[C] “Wife? Look, buddy, I’m not about to kinkshame you but if that’s your wife, she might be robbing the cradle a bit.”

“Eheheh, oh. No… No. I’m actually much older. We’ve been married a very, very long time, you see. Why, she was sent to me when she was only just twenty! Hmhm. Such a wonderful woman. So shy but sweet as sugar, worth every moment of my time. I’ve been rather ill most of our marriage, and she has faithfully taken care of me with nothing asked in return.”

[C] “Uhh… OK, that’s great, pal, but we still need to-”.

“I wasn’t done speaking. You insulted my wife. You laid a hand upon her. You’ve come to our home and defiled it with your presence! So, you will be paying for all of that.”

[The construction man scoffs]

[C] “Yeah, OK buddy. Pretty sure I can handle some pretty boy shit talking m-HUAGH!”

[Your husband grips him around the throat, smiling sweetly]

“I had wanted her first meal to be something more refined… but I think she will appreciate the irony of this situation for you, hm? Come.”

[SFX: General struggling and then a thump as your husband drops the man on the ground]

[C] “What the fuck is your problem?! What, you wanted to show me your fucking sidepiece too?!”

[Pause]

[The construction man freezes as it dawns on him…]

[C] “Wait… Old lady?”

“Hmhm, not so old now, is she? Such breathtaking beauty, such hungry eyes, seeking my permission… Go on, my Vampire Queen. Sate your hunger, and I shall sate other needs you will begin to experience, hmhm. Go on. You can do it.”

[C] “U-Uh OK, can we talk this out?!”

[You’re too ravenous to really heed him and tear into his throat as he screams and struggles. The struggles stop pretty quickly, fortunately]

[...]

“Shh… The first kill is always hard but if anyone deserved to be bled dry, twas him, I think. Now, come here, let me hold you.”

[He embraces you as if you were everything]

“I’m so sorry it took me so long to recover from that accursed vampire hunter’s attack… Leaving you alone for nearly twenty years… I hate myself for it, and I hate myself further knowing that you maintained this castle by yourself for so long. I cannot make up for that, but I am here now, ready to give you everything… if you’ll still have me.”

[Pause]

[He smiles warmly and kisses the top of your head]

“My sweet, angelic bride… Gods are you beautiful covered in blood. Come now, I have a lot to catch up on, starting with all the stories I know you’ve saved for me over the years.”

[He leads you away and you can’t really summon too much sympathy for the corpse on the floor]

“I love you, Sweetling, and I am grateful you never forgot that. I am glad you love me as passionately as you did the night we first made love. We have eternity now and, hmhm, don’t worry. I’ll handle that silly little paperwork. Oh, and body disposal. I somewhat missed body disposal… It’s good to be back.”
