Context: In your restless dreams, you see that town. You're not sure why, you've never seen it before, but you know that your dreams have gotten more vivid as of late. Realer. And each night, you wake to the sound of a wailing siren, but always wake up in bed. At least, until today...

[SFX: A warning siren]

[You shoot up at the sound of an ominous siren blaring across a misty town before you. You sit up on an old, cracked road, barely given a moment to stand before a massive blade slams into the ground behind you]

[Pause?!]

[You whip around and look up at enormous figure, barely visible in the mist]

No… No, you shouldn’t be here! No. You won’t haunt my dreams this night, Sinner! Sit still and bare thy…beautiful…neck… NO! OUT, DAMNED LUSTFUL ITCH!

[You scramble away while the entity rages behind you, further into the town before you can think better]

[Pause?!]

Don’t lie to yourself, little sinner. You know where you are, and you know why you are here for your sinful, wicked ways…

[SFX: A massive blade creaking and shifting]

For this pale, mottled flesh stretches across muscles and sinew. Come forward, sinner! Come and see the object of your desires made real!

[The fog shifts around a massive figure in the distance, muscles cut to a fine point and fine black hair spilling from under an immense helm]

COME FORTH, SINNER AND BELONG TO YOUR PUNISHER, FOR ALL THE UNCLEAN THOUGHTS YOU HAVE GIFTED UNTO ME

[You turn tail and run for it as fast as humanly possible]

YOU CAN RUN, SINNER, BUT THIS PLACE IS MINE AND YOU ARE NOT YET READY TO RISE TO YOUR FALSE GODHOOD!

[SFX: The siren wailing again]

[The world turns to ash again, to blood red on blood red on raw, dripping, blood red]

[SFX: Panicked footsteps across metal grating and rhythmic gasps of air]

Run now, sweet Sinner. You have corrupted this place! You have corrupted ITS PALADIN, ITS EXECUTIONER, filling me with unclean thoughts, thou foul creature!

[SFX: The “Paladin” swinging his blade into metal]

I WAS THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD, SINNER, AND THOU HAS SEVERED ME TO GRAFT ME ON TO THY OWN WRETCHED WRIST! No… this is a place of your sin, NOT MINE! Rrgh, go, you hounds! Go and fetch me their soul!

[SFX: Infernal hounds and the Listener running]

See now the hounds catching up to you, the visage of your procrastination chasing you at the heels!

[You race as fast as you can, somewhat surprised to see you have some control over the environment]

[SFX: A door slamming shut and locking]

I KNOW WHERE YOU ARE HIDING, SINNER! Back, hounds! The Paladin shall make this land clean from the temptation of lust!

[Pause!]

I do not care if you’re fumbling with a difficult puzzle! You have come unto this fair land, you have made it RED with your intoxicating allure, and that makes you a SINNER! A sinner that I must punish to make this garden pure once more!

[Pause]

[An idea occurs to you]

How dare you ask what makes you so alluring to a good, honest man such as myself! The gentle curves of thy body tell of filthy secrets laid in thy skin! Soft lips that dance in the mist speaking cruel, evil words into my ear, whispering my name to beckon me to thy bedside!

[SFX: His blade cleaving the door in two]

There thou lies, Sinner! Stand still and allow me to make you pure once more!

[You flash him in a panic and his helm quickly swivels away as he recoils]

Gargh, exposing thy smooth, sweet skin… Rrgh, no you DON’T!

[He snatches you as you try and duck around him and throws you down to the ground, hard]

You will tempt me no more! You will torment me no more!! I must await the new god, be ready to serve them, and all of my focus is on YOU! It cannot be so, and you will be punished so that I may be cleansed!

[His blade rises above you and, in one last desperate plea for your life, swing your foot up and kick his helm off. The “Paladin” recoils, covering his face]

NOO! LOOK NOT UPON MY TWISTED FORM! RRGH, SINNER, HOW DARE YOU KICK MY HELM FREE!

[Something changes]

[SFX: The siren wailing]

Hnh…? The siren calls but the world does not return to mist? What is happening, what evil have you called upon this once pure place?! No… No, your form… Your eyes that gleam like the treasures that lie where men go to die… Then, my desires… They are not wholly unclean? Then I am not beyond redemption.

[Pause]

Please forgive me my rage, my Purity. Maintaining my ability to serve you is the most important thing to me, my god. I will serve with every bit of my body until I am devoured by time. I will protect you from the abominations made of lust and cruelty here. I will eviscerate any one or thing that tries to touch you.”

[Pause]

…I kneel, my god.

[Pause]

…If you wish to see my face then…so be it. Know only I am not worthy.

[He moves his hands away and you gently tuck his long hair behind his ears. He rumbles and looks away with a huff]

… Please forgive my impudence, my god. My sickening desires for your form. And my own foul form. I believe, once, I was beautiful, but now…

[Pause]

I do not… look foul to you? Then you are the one set to bring this world whole. The one that will birth our god here, and become them. I am thankful it is you. Thankful that in my restless dreams, seeing you was not a punishment like cold coins under one’s eyelids. No, instead, my drifting eyes have given us a reward, a treasure greater than all else. Our god, who only need lie with a worthy member of our church.

[He bows his head and stands]

Then I shall endeavor to not break you

[Pause???]

The truth? No, it does not need to be me… but just because you have resolved your sin does not mean I have resolved mine. Now, let us make you ready for your true glory, Purity. As I said, I shall endeavor not to break you.

[With that, and not much else, the Paladin picks you up around the waist and vanishes back into the city as, one more time:]

[SFX: The siren wailing]
