“Yes, I’m very close to a new breakthrough. Could you be quiet for a moment? Who knows what might happen if I get distracted right n-”

[the sound of a poof, followed by glass shattering]

“Argh!”

[pause]

“Y-Yes, I’m alright. I-I’m just…”

[short pause]

“... All those months of research…”

[pause]

“It’s okay. I’m okay. (slowly start to speak faster and faster) I just need to start all over, update the research paper, go through another three months of work to remake or adjust the original substance, then go through all the things I had to do before to obtain more dragon blood, go through the entire experiment again… and hope that THIS TIME IT DOESN’T–”

[cut off with a gasp]

“What…?”

[pause]

“Dear, no! Sweetheart, it wasn’t your fault! It was entirely my fault; I had noticed that a number on the initial report wasn’t right, but I’d written it off as not being important enough to adjust my experiment! You being there when the vial exploded is correlation, not causation!”

“Besides… you protected me. Those glass shards bounced off your scales without causing harm to me or you.”

“I’m grateful, really. Who knows what would have happened if you weren’t here.”

[soft spoken]

“So… please don’t cry, my dear. I love you dearly.”

[pause]

“Good. No more tears, alright? That’s a good girl.”

[pause]

“Alright. Could you please let go of me now? I need to clean up, and then get started on re-acquiring all the materials, and then… and then…”

[sigh, followed by him falling to his knees]

“... I was so close… to another breakthrough…”

[pause]

“A break? How would that help me?! I need to get to this while the desired result is still fresh in my mind!”

[pause]

“What do you mean? I’ve been in my lab for the past few months! Of course I’ve taken a look around here!”

[pause]

“What do you mean without my lab goggles on?”

[pause]

“Oh haha. Just because I go into ‘experiment mode’ when these are on doesn’t mean that I haven’t paid attention to the things around me. I’ve eaten all the food you gave me, right?”

[pause]

“What do you mean that’s part of the problem?”

[short pause]

“Wha– Hey! Give me those back! Did you have to wrench them off my face!”

“Look… look around now?”

[longer pause]

“... Oh dear.”

“I… I suppose this place really is in need of a good clean… Oh god, was that mold always growing there?”

“But if I step away now… I might lose my place and be unable to come back…”

“I’ll– I’ll just get the materials at least, and then I can clean up the room and–”

“... My notes? You want me to guide you through my notes? Why?”

[pause]

“Well I’ve never been one to neglect your curiosity!”

[paper rustling noise]

“Oh geez, these notes are everywhere– oh this one got absolutely CAKED with that stuff I’m not touching that–”

[continuous paper noises]

[Speak this part enthusiastically and quickly]

“Alright, so you knew already that I was making a medicine for anemia in dragons, since blood transfusions aren’t exactly effective or a good solution for them, so I used this substance because…

(getting slower and more confused) “um, because it mixes well with Naga blood already, which I know because you helped me with coming up with a vaccine for Naga scalerot… and uh… the properties… so I… uh… where did this other substance come in…?”

[long pause filled with the noise of shifting papers]

“(small voice) ... oh.”

“... So all these notes were… well some of these are coherent but…”

“... I don’t think even I could understand these…”

[pause]

“T-Take a break?! But I was so close!”

“Hey! D-Don’t wrap your tail around me! Do you understand how important this breakthrough could be?!”

[pause]

“... My health is more important?”

[pause]

“What… but I’m not… how could the lives of many dragons compare to the life of this one human scientist?”

[pause]

“*laugh* I guess… I guess I have been a huge contributor to the magical creatures community… But still… all this is nothing. You saw how hard I worked to help you!”

[pause]

“Okay, fine. I know you were too ill to stop me back then. But still, if I rest, who will clean the lab!”

[pause]

“You will?”

[pause]

“What? It’s fall already?!”

[pause]

“Oh… oh dear, I’m so sorry. I forgot to help you set up your heat lamps!”

“You– you haven’t set them up yet?”

“I’ll go clean up. Please… be careful while cleaning up the lab.”

“Whew… yeah, you were right. That… that helped a lot.”

“Did you clean everything up okay? You didn’t get cut by any glass, right? Was the tile too hard for you to move on?”

[pause]

“I’m glad you got through it all okay.”

[pause]

“I see. You cleaned up the worst parts so that we could do the rest together once I’m well rested?”

“... I’d like that.”

[pause]

“C-Come cuddle with you?! But I still need to get the process for re-ordering the catalysts started!”

[pause]

“But… ah, fine… I can’t fight with you…”

[rustling noises]

“Ah… how long has it been? Since I last laid down properly…?”

[pause]

“Really? Th-That long?! That can’t be right…”

[pause]

“Just relax?”

“... Fine…”

[long pause. Slowly, he starts to mutter to himself again.]

“If I order it now, and pay them a little more, I can get it delivered by the end of this month… and in the meantime maybe I can figure out if there’s a way to stabilize the reaction with another element– maybe just some–”

“Ack! Wh-Why did you wrap your tail around me like that?!”

[pause]

“I was… standing up? But I–”

[pause]

“Oh… I think I’m still in work mode…”

“This isn’t good… if I remain in work mode, I-I’ll be neglecting you, and I don’t want to do that! But– but my brain keeps telling me that I need to work on the medicine and–”

[pause]

“Hypnotize me?”

[pause]

“Ah, right. I almost forgot that Nagas can do that, since I’ve never seen you do it. But… you’re offering to hypnotize me to force me to rest?”
