Sting

[phone rings]

Detective? Go buy yourself a collar, because Iā€™ve got a lead.

*listener speaks*

A storehouse near the river. Mostly inconspicuous, but itā€™s teeming with |Rival Mob Boss|ā€™s men. Iā€™ve even got reason to believe little miss PhD is here overseeing the packaging. So we might just be able to make a double play here.

*listener states*

Detective, I thought we had come to an arrangement. Calling back-up is a risk, and the longer we wait, the more we risk this falling apart. Weā€™ve got to do something brash, now.

*listener insists*

In thirty minutes, Iā€™m going to start shooting. So either you can keep flapping that pretty little mouth of yours, or you can watch my back. Whatā€™s it going to be?

*listener confirms*

Good. I thought reminding you that youā€™d get to ~watch my six~ might convince you.

*listener objects*

(tuts)

177 Dolson Way. Thereā€™s a fire escape on the south side of the building, and Iā€™ll be waiting on the roof. Get here quick, or your new fiance might just end up cold on the floor.

[phone clicks]

*pause*

[metal ladder creaks]

Took you long enough, detective. If I didnā€™t know any better, Iā€™d say you stopped for doughnuts.

*listener speaks*

Yeah, yeah. Get over here. Iā€™ve got everything scouted out pretty thick, we just need to think up a plan.

*listener asks*

Well, I see three entry points. We can storm the front door, break this skylight and make our way down through the rafters, or try to sneak in through the service entrance.

*listener questions*We got lucky. Surveillance looks light. Ten goons, plus three for the M.I.T. chick and a couple of assistants Iā€™ve seen wandering. I expect that everyone in there has a pistol at the least, and I already count two rifles patrolling.

*listener speaks*

Thereā€™s a makeshift lab is in that corner. As you can see, the packaged bricks are just stacked up in the center, and the M.I.T. chick has been frequenting that room over there. I imagine itā€™s just a private spot to call |Rival Boss Name|, but we still need to check it out.

*small pause*

And thatā€™s it. I brought a few guns for you since I donā€™t think that peashooter will be enough when the bullets start flying.

*listener comments*

No, I donā€™t think stealth is an option. The goons are clumped up to well. But, we might be able to make a quick sting, if we play our cards right.

*listener asks*

Well, technically speaking, the only thing weā€™re here for is the formula. Which no doubt lives on paper, on any computers, and in the M.I.T. chickā€™s head. We canā€™t trust the police, or even my men not to turn any notes over to |Rival Boss Name|, so weā€™ve got to be sure weā€™ve got every record destroyed before we swarm the place with blue.

*listener comments*

Donā€™t worry detective. I told you I wouldnā€™t have the girl killed, didnā€™t I? Iā€™ve already got a nice string of judges, juries, and detention officers, all bribed and ready to keep her in jail, and away from |Rival Boss Name|. I promise every death that happens tonight will take place in self-defense.

*listener agrees*

Glad that eased your mind, detective. Now, the notes. Since weā€™ve got to get them out before we call in any help; we canā€™t get ourselves shot, and we canā€™t let anyone leave this building. We have no idea whoā€™s got what, so weā€™ve got to assume everyone is a threat.

*listener states*

Youā€™re right. Chances are, the thugs wonā€™t run. The only real risk is the scientists. I say we get ourselves nice and set up, wait for them both to be in the lab, then make enough noise to get them to hunker down. The lab doesnā€™t have much cover, so scaring them into staying down should be pretty easy.

*listener agrees*

Glad you see it my way. Now, how are we getting in?

*listener picks*

Of course, youā€™d pick the service entrance. I donā€™t know why I even asked.

*listener states*

No, itā€™s a good route, I just thought that maybe Iā€™d taught you to have a little more fun with this type of thing.

*listener denies*Fine by me, detective. A chance to get nice and close to you isnā€™t something to turn down. Now if youā€™re ready, letā€™s get back down the ladder.

[metal ladder creaks]

*pause*

Okay, weā€™re about to hit crunch time. I know I donā€™t need to restate this but, if you arenā€™t ready to potentially die, and definitely kill some people at my side right now, then you need to leave.

*listener insists*

(exaggerated gasp)

Aw, Detective! I didnā€™t know you took ā€œdeath do us partā€ so seriously!

*listener denies*

Oh, donā€™t lie. You know you love me.

*listener insists*

Youā€™re right, I can curb the teasing for a few moments. Are you seriously ready to do some good for this little city?

*listener agrees*

Well then, after you.

[door creaks]

{hushed}

I donā€™t see anyone yet. You?

*small pause*

Good. Letā€™s find some cover before we start anything.

*small pause*

Think this is thick enough to stop bullets?

*listener states*

Well, I donā€™t seem much else around. Just cross your fingers and shoot people with higher calibers first.

*small pause*

Here comes the brain trust. And it looks like they arenā€™t armed.

*listener comments*

Yeah, that should keep them from doing anything stupid. So if youā€™re ready, we can take the first shots. Iā€™ll get those two rifles first, and you should hit as many of those guys moving the bricks.

*listener agrees*

Great. Iā€™ll take the first shot.

*small pause*

Remember when I teased you about your outfit on our date night?

*listener questions*

I think this is the perfect time for nostalgia, detective. It might be the last time we ever have.

*listener ignores*

Remember when we were driving, and I said your shoes were bloodstained, and you looked, and I laughed? Remember that?

*listener confirms*

Consider this something of a self-fulfilling prophecy.

[gunfire]

I got my targets. You?

[gunfire]

Great, so there are only a few left. Seven, right?

[gunshot]

Make that six. Nice shot detective.

[gunfire]

If I didnā€™t know any better, Iā€™d think you had practiced killing people.

[gunfire]

The last couple are bunkered up!

[gunfire]

Quick, make some noise for me!

[gunfire]

[gunshots]

*small pause*

Thatā€™s all of them, detective!

*small pause*

(chuckle)

Donā€™t you just love the ring in your ear after a gunfight? Itā€™s been so long since I was out putting holes in people, I had almost forgotten.

*small pause*

Okay, go get some cuffs on the brain trust. Iā€™m going to check the corpses, and then weā€™ll both head into that extra room.

*listener asks*

Because there might be some holdouts in there waiting to kill us, thatā€™s why. We need to check it before they get any ideas. So go get our new guests under control quick.

*pause*

Done?

*listener confirms*

Good. I didnā€™t find any notes on the corpses. Did the cooks have anything?

*listener denies*

Weird. Weā€™ll have to make another sweep for our missing evidence, but letā€™s check out that room first. Might be some stuff centralized in there.

*small pause*

Got your gun loaded?

*listener confirms*

You know, between the adrenaline, the smell of gunpowder in the air, and the sight of you being all big and tough, Iā€™m having a hard time keeping a smile off my face, detective. Iā€™m glad I brought you along, and not just because you're some really sweet eye candy.

*listener comments*

{facetiously}

Aw, I love you too, fiance.

*small pause*

Now, letā€™s get in this room. Ready?

*listener confirms*

[door opens]

*small pause*

|Rival Boss Name|!

[gunshot]

Rival Mafia Boss

|Mafia Boss Name|, love of my life, did you really think Iā€™d ever let you see my face again without a layer of bulletproof glass between us?

*detective questions*

Mafia Boss

What are you doing here, |Rival Boss Name|?

Rival Mafia Boss

Isnā€™t it obvious, |Mafia Boss Name|? Iā€™m baiting a trap.

*small pause*

[gas hisses]

Mafia Boss

You little-!

*small pause*

Detective! Donā€™t breathe! Just get out of theā€¦

[body collapses]

Rival Mafia Boss

Night night, detective.
