[Scene opens in an alleyway between two fenced homes]

[SFX: Some scuffling]

[The boys hounding you all stand and smirk at you as you ream them out]

[B] “C’mon, dude. We’re just trying to remind you that you should be addressed in a very particular way. Because let’s face it, you’re not fooling anyone meandering out of the thrift store, all dolled up and rolling in cheap, shitty costume jewelry.”

[Pause]

[He and his goons laugh]

[B] “Look, we’re just trying to do you a favor. The bullying will stop if you just use the right words to describe yourself, my guy. Remember that word? Guy. Cause that’s what you are.”

[Pause]

[B] “Ohohoho, easy! The pipsqueak is gonna strangle me with his feathery boa!”

[...]

[The goons all laugh, but a new voice joins the fray. A semi-snarly, stammering voice that simply shouts:]

“I-I’LL EAT YOU ALL IF YOU DON’T RUN!”

[SFX: Baby flames]

[The bullies jump back in alarm as a strange boy with small wings and a scaled tail joins you, puffing fire at them]

“G-Go on, buttharps! G-Get out of my lair!”

[B] “DRAGON!”

[They quickly flee down the opposite end of the alley while the boy huffs at your side]

“G-Geeze. Meanies.”

[Pause]

“Huh? Oh, I didn’t hear the insults, no. I just saw the pretty shiny sparklies and came running. C-Cause I’m a half-dragon. See? Boop, l-little tail, haha. Can I have your shinies? P-Pretty please?”

[Pause]

[He pouts, oddly cute and small for a half-dragon]

“Aww… Not even ones?”

[Pause]

“H-Hecks. Aw… are you cryings?”

[He follows as you try and stomp off]

“Ums… I like how fancy you looks…”

[Pause]

[The strange boy cocks his head at you]

“May we ask a question?”

[Pause?]

“A-Aha! Shiny attacks! Aaaaaomf! Aw. I-I thought I could nab the orange bracelet with my teeth, but you’re too fast. Um, my question… You were shoutings about thems calling you “he”... Um. I don’t understand a lot about you humans. Does that mean you wish to be called a “shes”? A “thems”? I just want to understands.”

[Pause]

“OK, then I call you thats! Thanks for clarifying.”

[Pause?]

“Am I curious? Well… I can be, if you want to talk bouts its. If you tell me you’re what you say, then I trust it. After all, you know yous best…. Nngh, oh the sapphire-colored bracelet on your right wrist is so pretty and sparkly, just like your eyes.”

[He smiles and his tail sways a bit]

“Sorry. Sparklies are a dragon’s weakness.”

[Pause?]

[His smile wanes a touch]

“Oh… I know I don’t look much like a standard dragons. Here, lemme open my moufs, nnaahhh… See? Ya, my toof is chipped. Blah. I got hurt real youngs and so my body developed into something more meek. Closer to a human, I guess, looking at you. But, even though I don’t look like a dragon, I still really want those shinies… Aww, but they’re so pretty… Umm… Oh! I know where real sparklies are! I could take you and we could dig some out in exchange for some shinies. Yes? Deal?”

[Pause]

“Yay! Thank you, thank you, thank you!”

[You hand him the costume sapphire blue bracelet and wait to see if he notices. Apparently not, as he slides it on his wrist happily]

“Thank you, human! Ahm… You still seem distraught. I want to understand so I know what to says… Is that OK?”

[Pause]

[He listens, cocking his head on occasion but not interrupting]

“...I think I understand. You didn’t want to be what you were before, so you chose a path that would make you content. And, because they knew you from before, they won’t let that you go and acknowledge this you… Is that close? I hope I’m not being disrespectful.”

[Pause]

“Ah… I thanks you for helping me understand. I think I sort of understands, and I hope it doesn’t seem like I’m makings it about me, but all dragons are born with this innate sense of “Roar, must burn things, be strong, arargarg” and it’s that sense that shapes us into the form we will finally take. So, when the form we receive doesn’t match what we imagined it can be… distressing…”

[He idly chews on the bracelet, seeming unbothered]

“Does that make sense?”

[Pause]

[He smiles shyly, teeth still around the bracelet]

“I’m glad! I always worry about, um… talking. Talking is hard. Chewing is easy.”

[Pause]

“Oh! Thanks you! I’m glad you thinks I’m good at talking, I’ve been practicing a lot. I get up early every mornings, go outside my castles and yell at the birds. I’m likes “GOOD MORNINGS!” and they’re kind of like…”

[He shrugs and makes an odd screech of a noise]

“Screechy! Like that. Not great conversationalists, no, no. I think they make funs of me for liking these kinds of sparklies. Know they’re not as rares or expensive, but I like how they catch the lights… and other dragons are less likely to steal them. I don’t like the stealings… They barge ins to my cave a-and call me a nerd. A-A nerd! Can you believe that?”

[Pause]

[He smiles a shy smile]

“Hehe, youse a funny ones. My name is Ronin. What’s yours?”

[Pause]

“That’s pretties! Pretties like shinies, yes. Ah! Here it is!”

[He hurries into a small cave opening]

[SFX: Gems and gold shifting about]

“Come ins! Here’s the shinies.”

[You walk in, ready to throw hands, but are greeted with a cozy little lair with a small mound of costume jewelry pushed to the side]

“The ones against the walls are likes yours. Plastics and all. Here’s the real shinies.”

[SFX: Ronin digging in the ground and lots of jewelry clinking together]

[Ronin produces an armful of gold, gems and, for some reason, some shiny foil cards]

“Go ahead! Help yourself! I gots a mirror cause I like trying on stuff.”

[Pause]

[You carefully sort through the treasure before you while Ronin continues to dig and, on occasion, roll around on his back in what you can only assume is an attempt to scratch his back]

“Rrgghh, itchy back, itchy itchy itchy!”

[Pause?]

[He sits up, tail wagging]

“Loooo…tiooonnn? What’s that, sparkly friend?”

[You pull a bit from your bag and show him]

“Ohhh, like burn cream! See burn cream a lot. Okie dokies!”

[You apply it to his back and he purrs, rattling what little scales he has]

“Cold cold cold cold! But then…? Nieces… Thanks, Shiny! Do you wants to try on stuffs with me? It’s fun!”

[...]

[Ronin smiles excitedly]

“Sparkly parties! New friend new friend best friend sparkly friend!”

[It wasn’t how you saw your afternoon going]

[SFX: More clinking and Ronin being excited in the background]

[But you reckon it could be a lot worse]
