Context: Your hand was promised to the Vampire King Lothaire after your father failed to deliver on a promise, and, after a rough journey, you found yourself in love with your King, even willingly marrying him. You have given birth to twins, and your husband marches to war with the nation that cost you your leg. A war began between your nation and Everfall, though the mad Queen was ultimately defeated by you and your many allies. You got to live a long life with your family, but couldn't be turned into a vampire, like them. As Death crept closer, your husband came up with a plan. Now, it is time.

Seventy-four years after the Battle for Everfall

[Scene opens in a chamber deep underneath the castle]

[SFX: A mystical hum]

[Lothaire stands with Lapis and Lazuli while you rest in bed, waiting for your husband]

“I know you two will rule jointly in peace. You’ve both grown into such incredible adults, and I could not be more proud.”

[LAZ] “We will do our best, father.”

[LAP] “Are you certain this is what you want?”

[Your husband looks to you, eyes worn with fatigue but warm still]

“Oh, Lapis… My son. Always so considerate and thoughtful… Yes. I decided long ago that I would always be with my Gem, no matter what it took. I cannot turn her to be a vampire like we are because of the sacrifice she made to save our nation… but I cannot imagine a life without your mother, my children. Even Henry has gained some semblance of immortality while in my care… and it seems the mangy beast wishes to join us.”

[SFX: Henry rumbling]

[You shakily move your fingers through his fur, hands long since wrinkled]

[LAZ] “Easy, mother… Do not worry, we’ll do you proud!”

[LAP] “We’ll never forget any of your lessons, mother. We promise!”

[You hug your son and daughter tightly, holding them close until coughs wrack your body]

“Gem! Oh, you’re coughing…Easy… Here, kids, let me sit with her… I fear we’ve run out of time.”

[The twins look at one another but step back, eyes bubbling over with tears]

[LAZ] “And…the crystal won’t hurt you, right?”

“No, Lazuli. Hmhm, my sweet girl, always so concerned… and yet so very, very punchy, hm? Mmhm. I’ll take the angry blush. To answer your question, this crystal is exceptionally rare, but it is how an Ascendant vampire often spends their transformation phases. It keeps us in suspended animation until we are let out. Your mother’s disease has… well, expelled all other options, I fear.”

[LAP] “Father…”

“It’s alright, my son. We’ve been together almost…what, seventy-four years now, my Gem?”

[Pause]

[He chuckles]

“Yes, a happy anniversary to you as well, my love. Kids, I… I fear this is goodbye, for now.”

[LAZ] “For now?”

“Who knows what the future holds, hm? We may very well see one another once more someday. But, for now, it’s time for your mother and me to rest.”

[Like you, Lothaire hugs them both tightly as tears fall between the four of you, leaving only Henry unimpacted as he snores on your lap]

“Farewell, my little loves. For now.”

[You wave goodbye to your children as they go, heart overflowing]

“There we are… They will seal this room soon, and you and I will be able to spend eternity together, my Gem… Gods, you’re still so beautiful…”

[Pause]

“I don’t care if you’re a hundred years old and not a vampire. You will always be radiant to me. Hm… I can’t stop smiling, thinking of the summer we vacationed in Rasan and you just… loved playing in the nice, warm waters. You were so cute around King Yvan and his, ah… polycule, I suppose, and you were so giggly over collecting shells. Here, let me lie next to you…”

[He does and you settle against him, still petting your faithful guardian]

“...do not be afraid, Gem. Lapis and Lazuli, Edelweiss, all of the friends we have made… They will be fine. And, should the worst pass, we will see them again regardless. You trust me, yes?”

[Pause]

“Good. Just relax. The crystal has begun to grow around the bed, see? Isn’t it the most beautiful blue color?”

[Pause]

[He holds you, rocking you gently, as your body gives in little by little]

“Shh, I am here. So long as the crystal withstands, I will always be here with you, my love. The disease cannot persist in this crystal and our minds will be able to play for as long as we wish. You will be young again! You’ll have your leg again… No more hurt or aches.”

[Pause]

“Love… Never apologize for your humanity. The ephemeral nature of your life makes preserving it all the more worthwhile. Let me tell you something: I knew I wanted this the moment we learned you couldn’t be turned, but I largely thought that my fear came from the Ascendant link we share. But… I know, even without another love in my life, I never want to be without you…”

[The sleepiness is creeping over you, and you know Death has come]

[Pause]

“Shh, Lothaire is here, my Gem. Shut your eyes, and you will be with me still. I promise.”

[You shut your eyes, feeling the crystal encasing you both before a pleasant sensation washes over your mind]

“I love you, Gem.”

[...]

[...?]

[SFX: Morning birds and general tranquility]

“Maiden?”

[...]

“Maiden?”

[Your eyes open and you are back in your father’s workshop. Your father shuffles about upfront, but you are not concerned with him. Lothaire towers above you, looking down at you in concern]

“Ah, apologies if I startled you, Maiden. I saw you working back here and came to say hello, as well as ask a question. Well, assuming your fearsome Zios doesn’t take my head off, hmhm.”

[A very baby Henry yips and bites at Lothaire’s cape]

[Pause?]

[He smiles, eyes twinkling]

“I wanted to ask if you might want to fall in love with me again. If you aren’t too busy, of course.”

Afterthought: Lothaire and Gem remained together for all of their days, and well past. The crystal containing their sleeping forms would not be recovered until hundreds of years later, where it was kept safe… until the world needed the King of Wraiths and his Queen once more…and their faithful Zios, of course.

Lapis and Lazuli proved to be excellent rulers. They used their knowledge to turn Edelweiss into even more of a technological marvel, putting it hundreds of years past most places on Earth in terms of mechanical advancement. They would leave Edelweiss in the care of seven vampire lords before vanishing under mysterious circumstances.

The Drowned Prince, Tevras, returned to the throne with his love by his side and quickly worked to right the wrongs of his mother. His love was often away at sea, but Tevras seemed content to let them travel. Rupin would return from his self-imposed banishment at his brother’s behest and, though she could not see it, Iniu’s dream of seeing her sons reunited came true.

The Clockwork Angel kept their power over Everfall and had an immense amount of offers from potential lovers. Rumor has it that they kept the Gyrehand twins as pets, and nothing more. No one knows if the brothers enjoyed it or not. Regardless, they stayed a great ally of the Veil warrior and fought against slavery and tyranny for many years, even serving as Advisor to King Tevras when they weren’t occupied with the current stirrings in Viros…

Veil would go on to take several lovers of her own and had children with some, one of whom would become the legendary Bloodseeker. She too fought against tyranny and slavery for many years until old age took her. Everyone was surprised she lived that long. Even her.

Iniu was not heard from again. And, as far as anyone knew, neither was the Devil, “Cicutta”.

Note: So, I don’t really know what to say here. The King of Wraiths has been one of my longest and most prolific series, and I’ve enjoyed writing it every step of the way. It’s never been much of an “algorithm pleaser” in terms of Youtube, but I hope that the VAs that have covered it have at least had fun with this story of two broken people finding love, raising a family, and protecting their kingdom with a few odd little happenings along the way. And my readers - oh, you sweet, precious beans, you've done so much more than you could ever know.
