[Scene opens on a sidewalk in a city comprised of old Gothic buildings]

[SFX: Hurried footsteps]

[You storm through the city, not caring for the people giving you looks nor the rain drenching you. You wander aimlessly for a good bit before a gentle voice calls out to you]

“Something troubling you, my dear?”

[You pause and turn toward the source of the voice. A young man sits on the stoop of an old building, smiling at you]

[...?]

“How did I know something was bothering you? Well, when you’re blind, you learn to pay attention to sounds. I know distressed footsteps from calm footsteps and you, well, your feet, sounded pretty distressed.”

[...]

“Oh? No need to apologize, you didn’t know. Haha, what did you expect me to say? “I’d glare at you but I’d probably wind up glaring at the mailman”? You can laugh at the blind joke, it’s fine.”

[You let a giggle escape and he smiles again]

“I know it’s not my business but… if you want to talk, I’ve got open ears. Really open ears. Aha, there was a laugh! You’re getting it, my dear. C’mon, tell Alderic all about your woes.”

[Long pause with Alderic occasionally acknowledging he’s listening and reacting to the story]

“...I see… He broke up with you on your birthday. Lord have mercy, I’ve never heard of something so cruel. Never seen it in any of my tarot readings either.”

[Pause?]

“Oh? Ah, yes. I’m the local fortuneteller. I hope my reputation doesn’t deter you, dear.”

[Pause]

“You’re interested in that sort of thing? Well, how rare! I’ve never met anyone open-minded about the, ah, abnormal arts, hmhm. Hey… here’s an idea. My client is running late for his reading. How about I read your fortune? It’s not a traditional gift, but it may comfort you to know better things are coming.”

[Pause]

[He laughs and stands, turning toward the building]

“It’s no trouble! I always have time for a beautiful stranger.”

[Pause?]

“How do I think you’re beautiful? Well, it’s in your aura, love. It’s… so radiant. Like an opal sparkling in the moonlight. Aha, and now you’re blushing. Hmhm, well, yes I know for sure. How? I’m psssyyychhiiicccc, ooooohhh.”

[Pause]

[He laughs again and leads you into his home. It is decorated in surprising decadence and you quickly find yourself before an obsidian black table]

“Here. Allow me to pull out your chair, my friend. Take my hand, love, and…. There you are. Mwah. Hm? Oh, kissing the back of your hand shocked you that much. Haha, I like you. You’re fun. Right, here we go.”

[You watch in silence as he takes a deck of tarot cards as black as the table and shuffles them, humming under his breath]

“A beautiful future for a beautiful soul, I hope.”

[SFX: The candles lighting by themselves]

[You jump as the candles lining the room all light in eerie harmony]

“Shhh, focus on the cards. Focus on me. I want you to picture everything I read for you… alright? Close your eyes and dream for me…”

[Optional creepy atmosphere/whispering voices]

“I see… a beautiful, wonderful soul suffering through their life. Through bad parents, worse siblings, and heartbreak after heartbreak…”

[...]

“I see…oh…poor thing, poor little love. You thought he was different… You thought this was the man that would want you forever, would make all the pain go away…finally give you the love you never got…”

[...]

“Shh, it’s OK… Cry. But let it be happy tears, OK? I see your future, and it’s beautiful.”

[...?]

“I see a man. Otherworldly, almost, and he is so in love with you. He adores you. He wants to hear all of your stories, every single day. He wants you so badly that it’s killing him… can you picture him, love?”

[You answer yes]

“Good. He’s so desperate for you. So obsessed, and so protective. He would do anything… anything for you. You’ll fall for him the moment you meet. I see the two of you together forever…can you see it?”

[Again, you answer yes]

“Can you see it?”

[Yes]

“Picture him. Is he handsome?”

[Yes]

“Do his eyes burn with desire for you? Only you?”

[Yes]

“Can you feel yourself falling in love with him?”

[Yes]

“Will you give yourself to me… only me, forever and always?”

[You answer yes before you realize your mistake. To your horror, Alderic lets out a demonic laugh that rings with insanity. His meek form transforms into that of a slender, intense, horned young man]

“Yessss, finally! Finally! Finally! Finally! FINALLY! Oh, come here, my love!”

[He grasps you to him before you can even think of moving, lips inches from yours as he pulls you flush]

“Oh, my sweet… my Songbird. I finally found you, after all this time! Mmmh, kiss me, please, mmh, mwah, love. Love, love, love, my sweet. Let me hold you… let me hold you while you slowly fall in love with me again and again and again…”

[Pause!]

“Shh… look into my eyes. There you go… you’re starting to remember me, aren’t you? I-It’s me, baby! It’s Auric! You’ve known me for over seventy-four lives now but you forget every time to reincarnate… I’ve been trying to find a way to make you immortal for centuries and I have it, this time! In my first life, I was a mage. A terrible mage, but a mage nonetheless. I’ve studied all I could of magic, slain thousands of foes to increase my tie to the dark star singing in the void, giving me the strength I need to save you.”

[You try to push him away, kick, scream…do anything but your head is going fuzzy. The obsession in his eyes makes you blush]

“Hold still… You’re going to a sharp sting on your hip…now.”

[You yelp as something bites you and glance down to see a silver snake slithering away]

[Pause…?]

“What is happening to you? Your fortune is coming true, my love. My pretty, sweet Songbird… I told you… you’d meet a man that would love you so hard you might break, you would fall in love with him the moment you met… You’re falling in love with me, my angel, just like I predicted. Hah… I’ve grown so powerful for you. The pain… the suffering… oh god, you… you embraced me willingly…”

[He pulls you painfully tight, sobbing]

“I love you… I will save you, I will NOT watch you die again! I love you, I love, I love you, my Songbird!”

[You hold him as he sobs, rubbing his back. You love him. You know you do]

“...Thank you for comforting me, my love. May I ask one favor of you?”

[Pause]

“Will you sing for me? …Please?”

[You open your mouth to tell him you can’t sing for beans but a beautiful song emits instead. He smiles. You smile. You’re connected to him now and it’s all you could dream]

“I’ll save you, my darling Songbird. I promise.”
