Context: You've been with your boyfriend for a while now. He's not always good but, when he is, he makes you feel like you hung the moon. You're moving in with him in a brand new city and now wait at the train station for him to come to get you, not knowing this will be the night that changes your life forever.

[Scene opens at an abandoned train station]

[SFX: Cold wind and a phone buzzing]

[You stand at the train station late at night, calling your boyfriend for the seventh time in a row]

[BF, picking up] “Heeyyy, babe. Look, I’m on my way, OK, and I really can’t fucking drive with you constantly ringing me.”

[Pause]

[BF, with an annoyed sigh] “I know I’m late, OK? It’s only by like five minutes.”

[Pause]

[BF] “OK, OK, an hour isn’t five minutes, I get it. I’ll be there, OK? Relax. Oop, the cop is giving me the stink eye, I gotta go.”

[...]

[You tell him you love him]

[BF] “Hm? Yeah, yeah, I’ll see you soon.”

[SFX: The call ending]

[You sit on the freezing cold bench, hugging yourself and trying not to sob. It’s not working so well]

[NG] “Hey. ‘Scuse me?”

[You look up and see a young man approaching, looking concerned]

[NG] “You OK? It’s not safe to be out here alone by your lonesome at night.”

[Pause]

[NG] “Ohh, waiting on your boyfriend, sure. Would you mind if I sat with you til he got here? I’d feel awful if I didn’t.”

[Pause]

[He smiles and sits next to you, warm]

[NG] “Thanks. How long have you been waiting out here?”

[Pause]

[NG] “An hour?! It’s damn near freezing temperatures! Did the people inside not let you wait in the lobby?”

[Pause]

[NG] “Closed because of how late it is… Geeze, you’re having one Hell of a night, huh? At least your boy is coming to grab you, right?”

[...]

[NG] “Seriously? He’s an hour late because he got pulled over by a cop speeding on the way here? Man sounds like a real dreamboat.”

[...]

[NG] “Hey, I’m sure he has his redeeming qualities, I’m not saying you have bad taste in men, OK? A bit of hot tea might warm you up though, right?”

[You chuckle and the new guy smiles a little]

[NG] “So, where are you pulling in from?”

[Pause]

[NG] “Oh, Everfall? Quite the distance. You visiting him out here, then?”

[Pause]

[NG] “Oh, you’re moving in with him… Wow, uh…”

[...]

[NG] “...look, I-”.

[SFX: A car pulling into the parking lot and skidding a bit]

[NG] “Oh, that must be him, hm?”

[You hop up and hurry toward the car as your boyfriend steps outside]

[BF] “Ayy babe, c’mere, gimme a hug. Woof, you’re fucking freezing. How come you didn’t wait in the lobby?”

[Pause]

[BF] “Closed? Enh, fuck, my bad. C’mon, get in the car, let’s get home.”

[Pause]

[BF] “Yeah, yeah, love you t-... who the fuck is this?”

[NG] “Hey man. I was just waiting with them for you to get here. Didn’t want her to be alone this late at night, no big deal.”

[Your boyfriend glares at your new friend, glowering]

[BF] “So, what, I’m five minutes late and you’ve already got a new man on your arm?”

[Pause]

[BF] “Babe, shut up, alright. I’ll tell you I love you when I’m not fucking livid. Who the fuck are you, and what were you doing with my partner?”

[NG] “Dude, calm down… They were shivering like crazy and I didn’t want them to be left alone. They could’ve been hurt.”

[BF] “Look, man, just butt out, OK? C’mon, babe, just get in the car, alright?”

[Pause]

[He lets out an exasperated sigh]

[BF] “I’m not having this argument, alright? Please just stop being stubborn and get in the car, alright? It’s freezing cold out here!”

[...]

[BF] “Babe, c’mon, just gimme your hand.”

[He reaches out for you but NG intervenes]

[NG] “Back off, man. They don’t want to go with you, and you’re scaring them.”

[BF throws his hands up in exasperation]

[BF] “Alright, ALRIGHT, well if you want to go with your new boyfriend, fine!”

[He gets back in the car]

[Pause]

[NG] “Hey-!”

[SFX: The car speeding off]

[Both of you watch your boyfriend speed off in stunned silence. NG sighs and drapes his coat around your shoulders]

[NG] “Geeze, what a douchebag… You deserve better, you know? I’m not saying me, but… godamn. Here, take my coat, OK? There you go…”

[Pause]

[NG] “Hey, hey, don’t cry… Shh, it’s OK, It’s gonna be OK… Look, I know it’s weird, but I can give you a ride home if you want?”

[Pause]

[He smiles gently and leads you over to his truck]

[NG] “Hey, it’s not a problem. You’ve had a rough night.”

[SFX: Car doors opening and closing]

[NG] “There we go. Here, want some water? It’s not exactly cold but, ah, you’re crying pretty hard…”

[SFX: The truck starting up and heading off]

[NG] “You’re welcome, sweetie. Sorry, it’s probably weird to call you that, right? Haha, I’m no good at talking to people.”

[You take a few shaky sips of water]

[NG] “No, no, it’s no big deal! Honest. I just really can’t believe that guy was so rude to you… That’s no way to treat your partner, you know? I know it’s not my business… it just bothers me that someone as sweet as you got torn down by someone that’s meant to love you.”

[...]

[NG] “Feeling tired? It’s OK, you can take a little nap if you want.”

[...?]

[NG] “Hm? Do I need your address? No, I don’t think so.”

[You glance over and see a slightly eerie smile resting on his lips. Your head is swimming]

[NG] “Hmhmhmhm… you know, I was sure he was going to take a swing at me or would drag you into the car. I was so sure that I was about to lose you, but… that idiot gave you right to me.”

[...]

[NG laughs quietly]

[NG] “Sweetie, the drugs are going to knock you out any second. Look at the pretty trees, enjoy the song on the radio, and try and remember what freedom tastes like, OK? You’re going to want something pleasant to think about when we get to my cabin.”

[SFX: Your phone buzzing]

[NG] “Aww, is that him? Calling to tearfully apologize after ruminating over why he’s such a broken thug that can’t express his feelings in a healthy way? That’s cute. Lemme see that phone, hon.”

[He takes it, rolls down the window, and tosses it out onto the dark road]

[NG] “No more phone, no more boyfriend, no more problems. Aww, you’re cute when you cry and yawn at the same time. Go to sleep, sweetie. I’m sure it’ll all be OK, now.”

[...]

[Sleep takes you before you can even think, before you can even realize that you probably won’t see your next morning]
