Siren’s Savior

Siren?

I don’t have to pretend not to know you anymore. At least, not in front of the guards. I suppose I have your little stunt to thank for that.

*small pause*

My parents are making me head this execution. It’s… a pretty sick punishment but, I don’t mind.

*small pause*

I wanted to see you again and say sorry. Before you’re gone. If this is my only opportunity then I’ll gladly take it.

*listener stares*

Please don’t look at me like that.

(sigh)

Message received.

(clear throat)

Siren. You are to be executed for your crimes and displayed to the public. Despite this, we, the living, mourn you, the dead. We wish that your soul swims free and that you find peace when Neptune comes for judgment. May the ocean’s currents bring you to the Great Sea.

*small pause*

Guards? This one is ready.

*pause for scene transition*

[crowd noise ambiance]

*small pause*

Citizens of this fair empire! Today, a criminal will be brought to justice! This siren stands to be executed, for an attempted kidnapping of the royal heir, for galivanting with surface dwellers, for resisting arrest, and for brainwashing serval members of the royal guard. Of these crimes, this siren has been found guilty. The only thing that remains, is the choice of punishment.

*small pause*

Since this siren is too dangerous to be allowed to speak, the choice of execution method falls on you, the people. I would ask you to cheer once, and only once, to indicate your preferred method.

*small pause*

If you wish to see this siren smothered to death in tar, speak.

[crowd cheers]

If you wish to see this siren torn apart by sharks, speak.

[light cheering]

And finally, if you wish to see this siren dried until dead on Solar Rock, speak.

[crowd cheers wildly]

{under-breath}

(clear throat)

The people have decided! The siren will be detained on Solar Rock until they die from heatstroke or starvation. Guards!

*small pause*

All may surface to see the deed done.

[mermaids breach water]

Guards! The ceremonial kelp!

*small pause*
Raise the prisoner atop the rock!

*small pause*

And now, I will tie them as we always have! Two tail lengths above water, that they may suffer, slowly!

[rope ties]

And with that, this Siren is dead. All who wish to watch the light fade from them are permitted to remain above the surface until further notice.

*small pause*

May the sea foam wash our hands of this blood.

[speaker dives]

*pause for scene transition*

[ocean night ambiance]

[speaker surfaces]

Siren? Siren, please tell me you still breathe.

[splash]

Siren! You need to wake up!

[splash]

Please, siren! I know it’s been a couple of days but please tell me you haven’t lost hope! I came to help you, but I can’t save a corpse! Please siren, fight!

[splash]

*siren struggles*

Thank Neptune! You’re alive!

*small pause*

Here. I took a spare spear from the armory. Hold still.

[rope snaps]

[splash]

There! Take a breath with your gills, it’ll help.

*small pause*

Siren? Would you hold still while I remove the muzzle?

*listener removes*

Oh, you’ve got it. Well done.

*listener speaks*

Excuse me?

*listener repeats*

Why did I come? To save you, siren. I came to right this wrong.

*listener questions*

Ah, you mean… ~why~ did I come? Well, I don’t have a new plan, if that’s what you’re asking.

*listener corrects*

It’s not. Yes, I suppose I know it wasn’t. Listen, I… told you some things that were rather hurtful. And… well… I meant them when I said them… but I’ve had a couple of days to think about how I felt. And your upcoming execution helped put things in perspective.

*small pause*
I am sorry, for all of this. I can see that ~this~ is my fault. I don’t expect you to forgive me, but I simply can’t do more. If you want to survive, then you have to leave. Return when you catch words of my ascension and I promise I will pardon you the moment you enter the palace. Beyond that, I can do nothing. I am sorry for getting you caught, and I am sorry for effectively stealing the next few years of your life, but I can do nothing but offer my condolences.

*listener speaks*

Then I shouldn’t have come at all? Siren, do not say that! If I hadn’t come you would have died! Is that not worth something?

*listener states*

I did not come for me! All of this is for you! I’m risking everything to be here for you!

*listener denies*

My own guilt? You truly think I’m doing all of this, just to ease my conscious?

*listener questions*

Go, siren. Swim far away if you wish to survive.

*listener comments*

And what if you don’t want to survive? Siren, I don’t like where this is going!

*listener breathes*

Siren, don’t-!

*listener sings*

*listener speaks*

*small pause*

*listener releases speaker*

No! Don’t… Oh Neptune… you already did.

Siren, please. Do not do this. If you kill me, you turn your temporary exile into permanent condemnation. My parents will stop at nothing to punish you if you kill me!

*listener questions*

Please siren! I’m truly sorry. I was ready to be caught for you! Every guard in the palace knows you didn’t kidnap me. The fact that no one was here to stop me was just dumb luck and negligence! I could have been strung up on this rock too, for what I did!

*listener denies*

Please, siren. I beg you. Please, don’t do this. I can bring change. I’ve seen the underbelly of my parent’s laws! If you keep me alive, I can bring a new era to the kingdom! I can ensure what happened to you never happens again!

*listener pushes*

Siren, please.

*small pause*

Please.

*listener states*

Very well. I understand. I’ve been nothing but terrible since we met. If you must send me to death, then I’ll embrace Neptune with open arms.

*small pause*

[spear swings]

(pained scream)

(groan)

*listener alludes*

(wince)

*listener explains*

*listener stops*

-by doing this you may have still sealed your fate. I have no doubt scarring me will anger my parents. You’ll have to live with one eye open until I can take the throne!

*listener states*

(pained sigh)

Take the spear with you. It’ll be a better story if they think I was unarmed.

*listener questions*

Yes, I’ll play along. It’s not like I have much of a choice but, I think I owe you that much.

*pause*

Siren. I am sorry. For all of this. I’ll do my best to help you, I promise.

*listener thanks*

Now go. I’ll give you a head start before I return to the palace. Please, do not get caught again. I don’t think your luck can stretch for two miraculous escapes.

*listener speaks*
