[Scene opens in your friend’s old truck as it moseys down a snowy, abandoned road]

[SFX: Music and old truck noises]

[You’re seated between your two oldest friends as the three of you venture toward your destination]

[Z] “Sheesh, the damned snow makes everything so eerie…Are you sure it’s safe to be out here now, Ben?”

[Pause]

[B] “Trust me, Zeke. I’ve been out here to visit the cabin and hunt during this season plenty of times.”

[Z] “Pff, you’re the expert, my guy. This one right here is the real threat, yeah? Hehe, c’mon, Snowflake! You know I’m just playing. It would be disappointing if we didn’t get a new picture for the “Whoops, There Goes Snowflake” album. Last year was you tumbling butt-first into the local creek, the year before was the beehive incident…”

[Pause!]

[Zeke laughs and ruffles your hair]

[Z] “C’mon, it wouldn’t be a buddy trip if three things didn’t happen: you do something adorably dumb, I rage over being bad at hunting, and good ol’ boy Ben here glares at me and goes “Zeke, your temper is gonna be the death of you”. Right, Ben?”

[Ben grunts something in response]

[Z] “...Ben, you good? You seem a little… grumpy.”

[B] “I’m fine, bro… But it wouldn’t kill you to be nicer to Snowflake, hm?”

[Z] “Aww, Snowflake knows it’s all affection teasing, right? You’d tell me if I was pushing it too far?”

[Pause]

[Z] “See, dude? All good… Like, I know you two used to fool around a little, but there’s no bad blood, right?”

[Ben sighs and pulls the truck over to the side of the road]

[Z] “Um…any reason you’re getting out of the truck, dude?”

[B, stepping down] “Just need to tie down some equipment in the bed. Think you can help me out?”

[Z] “Yeah, of course.”

[He steps out and goes to the back of the truck with Ben while you fiddle with the radio]

[SFX: A harsh metallic clang and thud before Zeke cries out in pain]

[Pause!]

[You hop from the truck and see Zeke splayed out on the road, holding his head as blood pulses between his fingers]

[Z] “Y-You… you hit me with a fucking crowbar…?”

[B] “I did, yes… I was kind of hoping it’d shut you up, for once, but it seems like that really is godamned impossible. Eugh, just lie there quietly while I tie you up.”

[Pause!]

[Ben pauses as you rush over, unreadable]

[B] “Sweetie, please go wait in the truck. I’ll be right back the moment I’m done dealing with Zeke, here.”

[Pause!!!]

[He sighs and, faster than you can counter, steps around you and ties you up]

[Z] “H-Hey! Untie them! This is, apparently, between you and I!”

[B] “Zeke, could you please shut your mouth and die with some godamned dignity?”

[Pause]

[Zeke looks at Ben, mouth bloodied and agape]

[Z] “Ben, are you fucking crazy?!”

[Ben smiles down at the two of you, eerily nonchalant]

[B] “You know… you’d have lived through this if you’d just kept your nose out of my godamned business and stayed away. All I wanted was some time alone with my sweetie here, but nooooo… no, no, no, you had to insist on coming with, ever the pathetic little puppy.”

[Z] “Yeah and I’m fucking glad for it! Do you have any idea how batshit insane you’re sounding right now?!”

[Pause]

[Ben’s smile turns genuine as you try and plead with him]

[B] “Awww, honey… It’s OK. I can just back over him with the truck, if you want it to be fast… Though, I’m honestly not sure why you want him to see any kind of mercy… He’s been so cruel to you over these long years. And, sure, I get it, it’s because he’s in love with you-”.

[Z] “Hey-!”

[B] “-and that’s really cute. And I can only begin to imagine how jealous he must feel, knowing that I’ve tasted you so intimately… But he’s been hurting you, sweetie… You know me. I’m a patient man. You have to be when you’re a hunter, you know? It’s taken years of us being friends, years of seeing him beat you down… You don’t need a harsh touch. You need someone gentle… like me.”

[Pause]

[Z] “B-Ben, don’t do this! I-If you do this, you’re kidnapping them, y-you’re taking my life! I don’t give a shit about the latter, but you’ll scar them for life if you haven’t already!”

[Pause]

[B] “You’ve already done a good enough job of that for both of us, Zeke. Here, c’mere, sweetie. It’s freezing cold.”

[He picks you up and gently sets you in the passenger seat, wrapping you in a heavy blanket]

[B] “There we go… A nice, warm blanket will help ease the cold, OK, sweetie? Good. Now, Zeke… how do you think I should kill him? After all, he’s your… “friend”...too.”

[Pause]

[You do your best to look bitter, to sound it, as you tell Ben your wishes]

[B] “Leave him in the ditch to freeze to death, hm…? Whatever you want, honey. C’mon, we’ll stop at a drive-thru before we get to my cabin and I’ll make sure you have a proper meal.”

[Z] “BEN!”

[B] “See you around, Zeke. Probably this side of Hell, someday.”

[SFX: Car doors closing and a truck puttering along a snowy road]

[B] “You’re being really brave right now. I’m proud of you.”

[...]

[B] “Don’t think about it too hard. He’ll go numb soon enough, and he’ll slip away in a nice, toasty fog. Meanwhile, you’ll be able to read and write in peace. I promise I won’t push too hard, alright? Not like I was before. I’ve learned to be patient, just for you…”

[...]

[Ben gently ruffles your hair, still so alien compared to his normal self]

[B] “Hmhm, fluffing your hair a little is nice. It’ll be nice to experience all of you, for once… without that loudmouthed idiot around. Don’t worry, OK? I know we didn’t quite make it work before, but, now? We have all the time in the world…”

[The road, and Zeke, fade away behind you as Ben drives carefully along. All you can hope is that Zeke remembers he has a knife before frostbite sets in]
