Post Body

Part 1

Context: The old barn is a strange place, a place where those who can't be of service anymore are sent. With constant rains and sieges from the forest, it's not quite the sanctuary for these poor creatures you wish it could be. It doesn't matter to you, though. This is your home and these creatures are your family, even if you are just a normal human. Yep. Perfectly normal. Pay no mind to the fact that you got sucked up into a twister protecting your little family and are hurdling about like a ragdoll. All normal.

Setting: The barn

[A] = The Announcer [T] = Tim, the not-so-friendly giant

[Scene opens, unfortunately, inside a twister]

[SFX: Faint twister sounds]

[You open your eyes and find yourself being whipped violently around the twister, scrambling for anything to hold on to as the old magic plays in your head]

[A] Fork is really in for it this time, folks! They used their signed baseball card to save the old barn, but what will they save themselves with now?!

[Pause]

[A] I bet poor Ol’ Fork here is wondering why they’re going to die for some rickety old barn. Oh, let’s bring back a special guest from dozens of shows ago to remind them!

[SFX: Static and then-]

[You hear your grandfather speak]

[G] “You see the stars up above? See how they swirl and ripple amidst all that beautiful color? There’s a beautiful woman up there, hair as dark as space, and she once turned the stars into something they called constellations, before the fall, and led them in a battle against terrible darkness. She knew you’d be born one day and that the world needed to be here for you. That’s why the barn is there, kiddo. Everything in it is a piece of those stars that she left just for you.”

[SFX: Wind whipping into a fervor and things smashing together in the tornado]

[G] “They’re very powerful, those star pieces. That’s why you have to grow up to be good and brave and strong and kind. Because I know you’re going to be amazing no matter how you do it. So, just do me a favor when you get bigger, OK?”

[Pause]

[You can’t see his face but you know he smiled]

[G] “Protect the old barn, OK? That thing… it’s magic.”

[You feel two massive things push together around you, very close to crushing you. Even still, you are pulled down from the tornado and against something massive and warm. It takes you a bit before you realize you are looking up at a rather annoyed giant]

[T] “...do you usually ride twisters, kid?”

[Pause?]

[T] “Have I seen others riding them? Uh, no… Shut up, alright. What are you doing in my neck of the woods.”

[Pause]

[T] “Yes, I’m aware of the twister that-. You know what, you really need to watch your tone if you want to get out of this alive! I’m already pissed off because some idiot sent me a letter that I can’t even read!”

[...]

[T] “... it’s you. You’re the idiot, aren’t you?”

[...]

[The giant sighs and turns around, stomping down a fairly steep hill]

[T] “Why are you sending me letters? I’ve already told you and your deadweights that I don’t care what you do, just stay out of my woods!”

[Pause]

[T] “You wanted to trade? Hmph. I suppose that’s at least more honorable than the other humans that just barge in here and then get upset when I beat them to a pulp. No. It’s never that simple. Tell me your actual intentions or I start squeezing.”

[Pause]

[T] “What? My name? Why do you care?”

[Pause]

[T, scoffing] “Oh, you feel it’s more polite, hm? Fine. T’mirek. You can call me Tim. Yours?”

[Pause]

[T, scoffing again] “Very well, Forked One. Now, your intentions?”

[Pause]

[His smirk turns into a sneer]

[T] “That really is all you wanted… Fine. Hold still, squishing heads is so difficult-.”

[He reaches down with his thumb and pointer finger only to jump back a bit as something shocks him]

[T] “Gah! What… What was that?! That shocked me just then! Wait… you. You’re the one with the old magic…?”

[Pause]

[The giant studies you, unreadable as he subtly rolls you around his palm]

[T] “Well. If you have the old ways in you, then you should be able to show me, right? You could connect with me?”

[Pause]

[T] “Fine. If you can do that, show me what it was like, then I won’t crush you. But you best not try anything funny, Forked One. Got it?”

[Pause]

[SFX: Magic sounds then piano]

Tim’s indifference turns to slow, quiet awe as you rest your palm on his]

[T] “I… What is this I’m hearing?”

[Pause]

[T] “Piano…? It’s beautiful… And familiar? Why is it familiar?”

[Pause]

[T] “Oh… My mother played it at the tavern we had to stay in when she was trying to smuggle me out…”

[It takes only a moment before he slowly slumps to his knees, shoulders racked in sobs as tears pour down his face]

[T] “I-It hurts so bad…but the memory… I’m so happy to have it again.”

[He pulls you close and you can feel his heartbeat thundering quietly under you]

[T] “... I understand.”

[Pause?]

[T] “I understand you. I see why you braved coming here, why you did not fear me. You… glow. With a kind radiance. You want to keep your family safe, and it is no more simpler or complex.”

[Pause]

[For a moment, the two of you listen to the piano from his memories, and cry in bittersweet comfort]

[T] “Thank you, human. Here, you’ll be more comfortable on my shoulder.”

[He sets you on the massive fur draped around his shoulders and you cling on as best you can]

[Pause?!]

[T] “It’ll be a three-day journey back to your barn, Forked One. We best set off now if we want to avoid more of the rainstorms.”

[Pause]

[T] “Good. Now, hang on tight. I’m not always great at discerning things falling to their death off of my shoulders.”
