Insightâs Infatuation
Lo, fair Oracle! I am, |Demi-God|! Child of |Greek God|! I have fallen out of favor with Thanatos, and I fear for my life. I have heard of your gifts, and I have come seeking guidance!
*listener speaks*Yes, despite my heritage, I am vulnerable to death. And Thanatos is not one to forgive. I need to know what he has in store for me, and how I can stop him. I beseech you to gaze upon my future and guide me accordingly.
*listener laments*
I know this is no light task. I know foresight is an incredible burden. But I am not ready to die just yet. I will make whatever sacrifice to walk under the sun, and I am ready to compensate you for your efforts.
*small pause*
I have brought you an offering! I know that you subsist on the donations of your visitors, and I am not so haughty to think I am exempt from that rule. Allow me to kneel, and present my gift to you.
*listener allows*
Fair Oracle. From the inner chambers atop Mount Olympus, I have struck a deal to bring you this! A gilded cup from Dionysus! It can turn any drink, from seawater to blood, into the sweetest wine. With it, you shall never go thirsty again! It is my offering to you, that you may smile upon me.
*listener accepts*
Thank you for accepting my gift, Oracle. Hospitality would refuse me a demand, but I would request that you see my fortune.
*listener questions*
I am sure. I need to know what lies before me. I know youâre prophecies are both airtight, and loose. I know it will be cryptic. But I must take every advantage I can have. Please, look at the strings of fate, and tell me when mine will be cut.
*listener states*
My hands? Yes, here. Take my hands if it will help you see.
*listener states*
Focus? Yes, I can do that. I will close my eyes, and trust in your vision.
*small pause*
There, is that-?
[ringing sfx]
*pause*
[ringing dies down]
-Oracle! Oracle! Are you well?!
*listener rouses*
Thank the Gods, youâre still alive! You fell when I took your grip, does that mean something?
*listener stares*
Oracle, are you well? Your staring reminds me of the sirens of Crete.
*listener snaps back*
Ah, the color has properly returned to your eyes. I assume whatever came over you has ended, and so, you have seen the future?
*listener states*
Different? What about my future was different?
*listener comments*
I wasnât aware this was the first time you gazed at the future of a Demi-God. But how exactly did that affect the process? Did my longevity blind you?
*listener speaks*Hark, and tell me that is the truth! Do you truly know how to save me from Thanatos? Can you spare me the usual forsaken tricks?
*listener confirms*
Then I am ready to do anything. What must I do to set the fates into my favor?
*listener speaks*I could follow you to the ends of the Earth if it means escaping death. Lead the way, Oracle.
*pause for time skip*
Ah, the sea line. What awaits me here, Oracle?
*listener states*Wrestle a shark?
(scoff)
That is childâs play! I once strangled a Kraken with my bare hands! If escaping Thanatosâ wrath is this easy, then I will be free of my fear before sundown! Let us speak to a fisherman, Oracle. Iâm sure that with a little blood as bait, Iâll have a shark in no time.
*pause*
Hark, fisherman. I need your aid. I wish to use your chum to bait a shark. I am prepared to give you its fins in reward, all you have to do is-.
*listener interjects*
I canât give him the fins? Fine.
(clear throat)Forgive me, fisherman. I am following the orders of the Oracle. If I cannot give you the fins, then I will happily grant you the tail-!
*listener interjects*
Grant you the gills?
*listener disagrees*
The teeth?
*listener agrees*
Ah, the Oracle confirms! Give me your chum, and Iâll deliver the teeth of the shark once it is slain.
*fisherman agrees*
Thank you, kind sir!
*small pause*
Oracle, I will not openly question your judgment, but was it really necessary to force me to guess what part to offer as tribute? Couldnât you have just told me to offer the sharkâs teeth first?
*listener disagrees*
Well then, I bend to your will. Excuse me, and I will swim out to sea, release the bait into the water, and return with a shark.
*listener confirms*
You do not need to wish me luck, Oracle. I do not need it.
[splash]
*pause for time skip*
{ragged}
Oracle! Look out to me! In no more than two hours, I have summoned and slain a beast of the sea!
*listener sees*
Oracle, are you right? You glanced at me and now, you cannot meet my gaze. What is wrong?
*listener states*
My clothes? Ah, this robe is rather translucent when wet, isnât it? Sadly, I have nothing to change into. I suppose Iâll have to wait to dry.
*small pause*
Now is as good a time as any to deliver the teeth to the fisherman. Do I need to take the shark with me?
*listener confirms*Of course, I do. No matter. I would carry this shark for a lifetime if that is what needed to be done!
*pause*
It is done, Oracle. Where are we to go next?
*listener speaks*
I shall follow you!
*pause for time skip*
Youâve stopped. May I put down the shark?
*listener confirms*
Thank you, lovely Oracle.
*speaker drops shark*
*listener questions*
I said, âThank youâ. Why does this distress you so?
*listener denies*You say you are not distressed, but you cannot meet my gaze yet again. Is something amiss?
*listener denies*
As you say, Oracle. Now, why are we at this cliff face?
*listener states*
You would have me carve a cauldron and two bowls out of the stone? Must I use my bare hands?
*listener assures*
Ah, Iâm allowed to use the rocks and boulders as tools? Then this should be easy! Give me an hour, maybe more, and I will have your vessels ready!
[intermittant stone on stone sounds]
Oracle, Iâve been meaning to ask you something. You have absconded from your temple to aid me. Surely, you do not show this hospitality to all of those who seek you. I am left to assume that you must have a personal stake in my survival. I would ask that you tell me.
*listener dodges*
Iâll understand soon enough? Foreboding, but I would expect nothing less from one who sees so much. Again, I will trust your judgment.
*small pause*
There, I have finished both of your bowls. All that remains is the cauldron. This is going by quicker than I thought it would!
*pause for time skip*
And so finishes your cauldron. Oh, I see youâve dissected the shark! Although, I wonder where you conceal a knife under that tunic. No matter, that will make it much easier to carry!
*small pause*
I see you put the shells and herbs from the beach in one of the bowls. I did not question it when you took them, but I am curious, what purpose do they serve?
*listener responds*
Zest? Am I going to eat the shark?
*listener dodges*
Okay then. I will accept that you know best. Allow me to put the shark meat and the bowls in this cauldron. Then we can continue with whatever comes next.
*pause for time skip*
Quite the view from atop this hill. Please do not tell me you wish me to jump down, or anything else of that sort.
*listener assures*
Good. What must I do then?
*listener states*
Cut this tree without a tool? Ah, now this may be a challenge of thought! Let me see. Young, healthy tree. Not too thick, but definitely strong. I wonder if I could..?
*small pause*
Oracle, I have formulated a plan. Am I to tell you of it?
*listener states*
You already know what my plan is? I suppose that makes sense. You do see the future after all. Well then, I will make way. Allow me to sit⌠and then straddle the tree.
(exhale)
Here we go.
(groans of exertion)
[tree snaps]
Yes! I have bested this tree!
*small pause*Oracle! Are you okay! Did the tree hit you?
*listener denies*
Then why have you crumpled? All I did was crush the tree between my thighs! I donât see why it would hurt you.
*listener states*
Not hurt? Then why have you balled up? Why do you cover your face?
*listener avoids*
You want me to take everything out of the cauldron, fill it with water, then bring it back up the hill? I suppose I can do that, but that wonât distract me from this. If youâre hurt, I want you to tell me. I did not become a hero by ignoring those in need.
*pause for time skip*
I have brought your water, Oracle. I see you lit a fire with the branches of the tree. I donât know what tricks you used to dry them, but obviously, you have your ways. Do you want me to set the cauldron on the fire?
*listener confirms*
Iâve had time to think while I got your water. Iâm almost certain that you're going to cook all the ingredients we gathered, but I canât figure out why. Is it a potion? A good meal before a fight? A poison maybe?
*listener responds*
I suppose Iâll see soon enough then. While the water comes to a boil, what would you have me do?
*listener states*
Sit with you? So be it.
(sigh of relief)
Wow, this trunk is oddly comfortable. Was that intentional?
*listener states*I thought as much.
*small pause*
Oracle, I notice youâre sitting rather close.
*listener asks*Hold you? Yes, if thatâs part of your aid, then I can do it.
*small pause*
You have that look in your eye again. Hungry, but I donât think for food. In fact, Iâm starting to have a suspicion about why youâre helping me so personally.
*listener questions*
Well, here we are, with the ingredients for a shark fin soup, in a secluded area, at sunset. I think youâre trying to seduce me, Oracle.
*listener inquires*
No, I donât mind it. I certainly wouldnât mind laying with you. In fact, if I didnât know any better, Iâd accuse you of being a God in disguise on account of your⌠alluring form. But I donât think this is the best course of action. From what I understand, you are to be chaste. Only fornicating with your partner, whoever they may be. I would not besmirch your years of effort by sleeping with you.
*listener states*
Truly, Oracle? You would wish me to be your partner?
*small pause*
I do not think that is well. For a start, I am immortal. Would you want a partner who would be spry when you are grey? Second, I am a traveling hero. While I would remain faithful, I would not remain still. Our time together would be sporadic. Thirdly, I donât think my Godly parent would be happy with this. I donât know the deepest intricacies of the Olympians, but my parent and your patron do not see eye to eye. They may bar any attempts we would make.
*listener denies*
Of course, you donât care. Youâve been nothing but bold for our entire meeting. I imagine knowing the future allows for that. But I warn while you may know the future, you do not control it. If we followed this path, we may find ourselves in a situation we cannot escape. With or without your foresight.
*listener disagrees*
Truly? You would bet against the odds like this? You would deny the world in favor of your own skill?
*small pause*
And what if I wouldnât? Iâve tried to trust you, but youâve yet to show any results. For all I know, Thanatos was never even planning murder, and youâve been taking advantage of me. So why should I put my faith in you?
*listener speaks*
Is that a threat, Oracle?
*listener disagrees*
A promise.
(chuckle)
You are right. I do value life more than most else. And I do think Thanatos plans to end me. If you swear, upon your patron God that you will always guide me to my best outcome, then I will swear on my Godhood to stay faithful to you. And learn to love you as the years pass.
*listener agrees*
Itâs a deal then.
*small pause*
Say, Oracle. Now that we are bound, I would ask you a question.
*listener agrees*
If you can see the future, did you not already know how I would respond to your deal?
*listener confirms*
Then is it a stretch to assume that you knew every time you would become flustered, and exactly how Iâd react, and you still chose to go through with them?
*listener concedes*
So, to review, you craved seeing me wet, hearing me call you, âlovelyâ, and watching me snap the tree so much, that you orchestrated a future that included them from the beginning?
*listener confirms*
Wow, quite the degenerate you are, Oracle.
*small pause*
Well, the water has come to a boil. Once the soup cools weâll be ready to eat.
*small pause*
{knowing}
Tell me one more thing, Oracle. Can you see what Iâm going to do to you⌠after we finish eating?
*listener flusters*
Ah, you can! Well, I advise you to eat fast then. After all, you know whatâs for dessert.
