Hey honey! How was the vacation?

*listener rejects*

Oh, come on. Wasn’t it nice to get a little time to yourself? No job, no distractions. Just you, your thoughts-

{quietly}

-and the Stockholm Syndrome.

*listener disagrees*

No, not yet? Well, maybe we won’t need it. Why don’t we go for a fly, honey?

*listener combats*

From what I understand you weren’t getting live T.V. in here, so don’t you want to see what I’ve done with the world? I made quite a few changes.

*listener denies*

{singsongy}

It’ll be fun!

*listener denies*

I know that when you’re saying no, your heart means yes. Here, let me pick you up.

*listener resists*

Honey. You have to stop struggling. You know it’s just going to make me mad.

*listener continues*

Honey. Don’t make me do something I’m going to regret.

*listener conforms*
That’s better, sweetie. Hang on.

[wind whooshes]

As you can see, the streets are cleaner. Air pollution is down fifty-five percent. And thanks to various lighting curfews, you can actually see the stars at night in every major city. So we’ll be able to stargaze whenever we want! All thanks to a little more ~intense~ regulation.

*listener questions*

Yes, some groups showed resistance, but most people were open to my changes. In fact, most of the problem was institutions, and when you take over every world government, that becomes an easy fix.

*small pause*

Ah, here comes our new home. Great view, good schools, and perfect neighborhood. Although, most neighborhoods are perfect these days. I made it illegal to lock your doors. I think it’s really fostered a sense of community when anyone can just drop by.

*listener questions*

Oh, don’t worry! I was worried about crime too, but it’s down ninety-eight percent! Right when I took over, I sent every convicted criminal and anyone else who didn’t want to conform to Australia. We got all the law-abiding citizens out first, and we do nothing to police or regulate them in any way. If anyone ever dislikes my rules, they can apply for a free, no checks needed, one-way plane trip. If anyone’s caught breaking the law in the civilized world, they are immediately executed. So basically, I solved world crime. No need to thank me.

*listener questions*

No, that’s the best part! The standing militia is entirely immune to all hints of bigotry. We gathered up everyone who had no family, or friends, basically the people who wouldn’t be missed. We utilized a largely unethical brainwashing program to ensure they are perfect judges of character without fear of them developing feelings or power hungry-ness. They’re only about two steps away from lacking emotions altogether, isn’t that great?

*listener asks*

Yeah, you’d think you wouldn’t be able to find a hundred million loners but turns out, seven billion is a really big number.

*listener denies*

Not what you meant? Well then, what did you mean sugar-bear?

*listener questions*

Oh, how ~could~ I do that to people? Well, honestly honey, how could I not? Ever since I killed MindSweeper, something really clicked. I think I finally realize what it means to serve the greater good. Sometimes, you have to make some sacrifices. And when no one will step up, you might have to make the sacrifices for them.

*listener states*

What do you mean, I don’t get to decide that? I’m in charge of the entire world. I’m pretty sure I get to make those decisions.

*listener disagrees*

I think I’m seeing the disconnect here. The problem is, you didn’t get to see history unfold like every else. Here, I’ll do my best to give you a play-by-play. Right when I left you, I called a meeting with the League. Then I executed every major hero to ensure they wouldn’t stop me. Step two, I assassinated every world leader. That was a little excessive, but I think it really helped. Step three, broadcast worldwide that I would be installing my own leaders in those positions, and anyone who attempted to usurp the position would be executed. Once I had my supporters in every leading role, I could strategically demilitarize and re-militarize crucial areas until my new police force could take over. A month later, I have an iron grip on the world, and I can pass whatever policies I want completely free of the usual politics.

*listener objects*

Honey, can’t you see? This is great! Thanks to me, we can fix every problem! We can live in a world that doesn’t worry about hunger, or poverty, or freedom. Everyone can just follow the rules, and live a happy life!

*listener incites*

Don’t say that, honey.

*listener baits*

I’m not a monster, honey! I’m just doing what’s best for us!

*listener disagrees*

Not what’s best for me, best for us! I only care about living a happy life with you. I couldn't do that if society couldn’t conform to a sense of calm. How could I relax with you if there was always a crime to stop? How could I live with you if we were dependent on my paycheck? How could I sleep at night knowing someone might hurt you when I wasn’t there? I made this world, so we could be together!

*listener denies*

Honey, I know you feel a little distressed, but I promise, this is good. Can’t you just take a moment to see that with me?

*listener disagrees*

Fine. I knew this could happen, I had just hoped it wouldn’t come to this.

[thunk]

*listener collapses*

*pause*

Hi, honey. Guess where you are.

*listener murmurs*

That’s right! A sound-proof basement! Not that it needed to be sound-proof. You’re kidnapping isn’t a secret. I told all the neighbors and they won’t interfere.

*small pause*

It looks like we’re going to have to bet on Stockholm Syndrome. But it shouldn’t be that hard! You already loved me. You just got a little confused. I’m sure after some tender time together, you’ll be singing the right tune in no time!

*listener comments*

Yeah, you know how this routine goes. Sensory deprivation when I’m not here, lots of sugars and games when I am, until you subconsciously associate me with good times. Plus, never leaving this basement and having no one but me to talk to will give me a shoo-in as your sanity contact.

*listener frets*

Hey, it’s okay! That chair is nice and comfy, and you can just relax there. Sleep the days away until your circadian rhythms are totally broken and you lose all sense of time. Then when the days blend together, I’ll be your light in the dark. You’ll be back to your old, loving self in… six months? Probably quicker, actually.

*listener speaks*
Don’t worry about the outside, honey. You can’t change it, and it can’t change you. You’re two ships passing in the night. Just relax. The faster you get into the right mindset, the sooner we can be together again.

*listener yells*

Such bitter words. Although, that was to be expected. You’re breaking my heart, honey. But I can be strong for a while.

*small pause*

We can begin now. You certainly seem like you’re in the right headspace for it. So I’m going to go. I’ll be back in an undisclosed amount of time with your first meal. I love you, honey!
