[Door opens and closes] Hey, there you are! It’s been a while, come in! I got some snacks for us, and not gonna lie, it’s a good thing you showed up when you did, because it smells way too delicious in here. I was right about to tear this bag of chips open first. Salt and vinegar. [sniffing] You can smell that too, right?

Nervous? No, not really. What is there to be nervous about? I’m good, bud. The exam is on Monday, so we oughta get on it, right? I made flashcards and everything. How’ve you been, by the way? Sorry, I’m just really excited about these chips. And I got some chicken wings, we can cook those up later, and, oh! I remember you saying this is a lot of meat and carbs, so I got stuff for salad too, and…

Huh? My tail is down? [---] Oh. Yeah. I guess that makes it pretty hard to lie. Honesty is the best policy, right? Or, if it’s physically impossible for you to lie, the only policy, I guess. [nervous laugh] [---] Right, sorry. You know what today is, right?

[---] Exactly, it’s Unification Day. The day when all humans and non-humans decided to put aside all their differences and sign a bunch of treaties and do all that political stuff, and eventually figure out a lasting peace. It’s a good cause, obviously. I mean, it’s the reason we’re able to hang out like we do. But, tonight, there’s gonna be… fireworks. [growl-whimper] I don’t like fireworks.

[---] Yeah, I know most people are fine with fireworks. I was talking with other Inus about it, and it seems like even most of us are okay with them. I don’t know what’s wrong with me, but I could never get used to them. How loud they are, how close they sound, the burning smell they leave behind… I’m serious, it smells like there’s a house burning down somewhere. It’s scary.

So, I figured with the exam just a few days away, maybe we could study tonight. Take my mind off it, and help get us both ready. Plus, I’m always happy for an excuse to hang out with you. What do you say?

[---] Awesome! You wanna eat first, or just get to it? I tried to pick up some different foods for you. Like I said, there’s stuff for salad in the fridge, with some different fruit, some buns too. I’ll eat pretty much anything, but I know humans are a little more discerning. Did I forget anything? Is this-- [---] Just some chips for now? Got it. [bag of chips opened and poured into bowl] Alright, let’s get going. It’ll be dark soon, so now’s a good time.

[time skip]

…And here’s the next card. What does that equal?

[fireworks start]

[yelp] Huh? No, no, I’m good. So, uh, you got the answer?

[fireworks]

[whimper] Why does a celebration that includes Inus have fireworks? You think someone would’ve figured that might not be a good idea. [fireworks, whimper] So, the answer, you got it?

[---] Do I wanna take a break? No, I’m good, I can do this all night, I just wish… [fireworks] Ah! I just wish that noise would stop. [---] Huh? Take a break? [---] [Sigh] If you’re sure it’s okay. I’m sorry. [---] Well, it’s just like last time. We’re not studying like we should be because I don’t have my head in the game, and—

[fireworks, whimper-growl] Oh, come on… What—Uh, what are doing? [---] And now you’re hugging me. It’s nice, of course! But I wasn’t expecting it, and, you know, I don’t know how humans are about hugging, but Inus don’t really do it, so it’s just not something I’m—[fireworks] Ah…

[fireworks go for a little longer, then fade away]

[sniffing] You smell really nice today… Huh? Oh. Yeah, I guess it must be over now. Thanks for that. [---] Yeah. [chuckles] I’m kinda over studying for tonight, to be honest. We got a decent amount in. We can afford to break now. [---] Oh, now you’re hungry, huh? Come to think of it, I’m down for food. I’ll get started on the wings.

[---] Hey, now, you don’t have to do a thing. I can make us a salad once the wings are in the oven. It’ll take them a while to bake. [---] How about this, then: I’ll make you dinner as thanks for hanging out with me and keeping me cool tonight. Sound like a deal? [---] Alright, great! I’ll get the oven preheated. [---] Oh, uh, that’s gonna take a few minutes, too. Gonna be honest, I didn’t plan out this very well. It was literally just “friend, food, and books to drown out scary boom-sticks”.

So, what do you wanna do now? I’ve got some board games, or some movies on my laptop. [---] Movies, huh? Works for me. I’ll get it all set up in the living room. I remembered the name of that artsy Russian movie too, I guess the director of it was kind of a big deal, and he made a bunch of other trippy movies— [---] Oh, just something simple? Works for me. Here, I’ll bring the laptop over, you can pick one.

[beat] Hey, I know I already said this, but I really appreciate you coming over tonight. The fireworks would’ve been a lot worse if I had to hear them alone. [---] [Laughs] Yeah, I guess I am talking about them like they’re some otherworldly mind-shattering ordeal. Dead Cthulhu lies dreaming at Costco. They are scary, though! [sigh] You’re never gonna let me live this down, are you? I mean it, though. You’re a good bud. One of my best buds. Thanks for being around.
