I care about lot about being inclusive, be it for LGBTQ folks, Neurodivergent folks, and folks with Disabilities.
I have a mild physical disability and I always get really excited when I see a character in media that i might be able to relate to. So I would like to write scripts that make folks feel a little more "seen".
Maybe you're legally blind? Would a Speaker character making a certain comment help you feel more included?
If you use a cane, or a sight cane maybe they comment on it or compliment it by saying it looks cool?
If you use a wheelchair, would it be okay if the speaker is pushing your chair? Or helping you out of it?
Do you have trouble walking? Could the speaker offer to help you, carry you, or give you a break to sit down?
Prone to sickness? Migraines? Chronic pain? What reassurance would you like to hear?
Maybe a little hard or hearing? Would you like the Speaker to speak up, or maybe you teach him a few signs?
If you do have a disability and don't mind sharing, I'd like some insight! I can't speak from personal experience for anything beyond what very mild issues I personally have. Here's what I'd like to know!
- An appropriate [Tag] to use for a particular condition you're talking about.
- Perhaps a subtle comment a Speaker can make that would feel kind and inclusive
- A detailed scenario focused on it, or just a single brief gesture the Listener can do to help with inclusivity without focusing on your disability or turning into inspiration porn
- Avoid Steteotypes or ableism
My scripts tend to be very sweet and doting so, toss some ideas my way and I'd like to try writing something 😃
