Summary
The speaker is a monster that is posing as a family friend of the listener. Usually the listener visits them every year, but this year they have come so quickly despite leaving at the usual time, suggesting speed. The speaker (obviously a monster) uses the excuse of the listener sweating (from both the exercise of the journey and the fear of the monster) in order to offer them a bath. Of course, the speaker is instead making a soup that they will put the listener in, excusing every step of preparing the soup with flimsy arguments. Throughout the preparation of the soup, the speaker is reminded many times of the rabbit running around outside that they couldn't catch, making them ever so hungry for it. Eventually the listener convinces the monstrous speaker to let them leave to catch it, since they are so fast. Much to the speaker's dismay, they realize they have been tricked when the listener does not return.
