We're getting closer to romance, I promise. It's a slow burn.

[campfire sounds]

You look better. The color is back in your cheeks at least. Have you used magic a lot?

A bit? What does that mean?

I'm only asking because you cast that spell and looked like death warmed over. How do you think you'll be able to stop the Queen like that, lady? It'll be a miracle if you even manage to stay up right the moment you step foot on the palace grounds.

You have a way? Cryptic much?

I won't deny that I'm curious. You seem to have a lot of secrets, lady, maybe even more than me. Which is saying a lot when I consider how many I have.

You know more about me than I do about you. Probably because you sought me out.

Yeah, I'm not surprised she's still fighting the good fight. She's a knight through and through. She'd be pissed if she saw me now. She gave me such shit when we served together. An annoying older sister type. Always thought she knew what was best. Great leader though. She has a way of inspiring even the most depressed soldier.

No. I don't plan on meeting her again. Like I said, that was another life.

So, lady, what about you?

Oh, come on, lady, tell me something. Who were you before the queen?

Well, I think I've got you figured out.

What do I get if I'm right?

C'mon, lady, I'm a mercenary. Everything I do is for profit. So, what do I get if I'm right?

A favor? What good is that if you die?

Fine, fine. A favor. So, I think you were a lady-in-waiting. You move with a grace that one could only expect from court life.

It's a very specific walk, lady. Though, I suppose it's more like a glide. Isn't that what ladies strive for? To look as if they're goddesses down from the heavens?

[laughter] Relax, lady. No need to glower at me so harshly. Let me finish. So, a lady-in-waiting, but you were hiding you were a mage. You hid your powers. Until . . . ?

Until the king died and you were powerless to stop it.

Yeah, that's how the story ends. Look, lady, whatever noble task you feel that you have to fulfill, it will only end in blood. Yours, I think.

Liar. Everyone fears death. I've seen hardened soldiers beg for their lives. You just wanna throw your life away like that?

I'm convinced that you won't. The queen has killed much stronger opponents than you. You're in over your head, lady.

I'm not worried about you. I told you, I'm only worried about me. I could care less what happens to you.

. . . why? What kind of questions is that? Does it even matter? That was another life.

Because I believed in the ideal, okay? The knight on the white steed, righting wrongs and triumphing over evil. That's what I was--what I thought I would always be. But, life isn't a story. The good guy doesn't always win. So, I left.

Fine, I ran. I survived, lady. Like I assume you did.

No. I'm not happy with this life. But it doesn't matter. Nothing can change it.

Well, then you're an optimistic fool. You almost collapsed after dealing with a dozen archers. How will you handle an army?

You've got an ace up your sleeve? What would that be?

A secret, huh? Fine, lady.

Just . . . be careful. Save your strength. We've still got a long way to go.

You should sleep now. I've got first watch.

Oh, don't worry, I will wake you up for your turn. Make no mistake about that.

[laughter] Apologies, lady. I'm a former knight, remember?

Now, go to sleep. You're safe. Nothing is getting past me.
