The listener is a young man living in Chicago in an alternate 1893. the world was much more futuristic in this timeline. and everything is powered by steam. clocks, the City transit, ETC. there's a lot of new steam tech too. steam-powered Robots. Automatic dressing Machines. and instead of Trains, the city gets around via steam-powered tubes. it is currently the World's Fair where a bunch of Inventors showcase their innovations. one particular Inventor is named Elisabeth. she's a brilliant scientist and engineer. She invites him to her workshop after the fair. when they get there her steam powered Robotic servant offers him a drink. he drinks it and passes out
