[SFX: Approaching footsteps on stone]

[A] I have to send you away… I have to…

[SFX: Closer footsteps]

[A] N-No, if… If I love you any harder, I’ll kill you… They’re taking me away… I’ve hurt you too much…

[SFX: And closer…]

[A] I love you… I will come back for you, I promise… I PROMISE!

[V] “Ah… A new patient… Let me review your chart for a moment, my dear…”

[. . .]

[SFX: Chains rattling weakly]

[V] “Ah… One of Prince Adam’s pets… Yes, that tracks… I heard he’s being sent away for a few hundred years to be treated for his ‘addiction’, hmm?”

[. . .]

[The strange man surveys you, walking about your enclosure and murmuring quietly to himself. You don’t care]

[V] “...I don’t believe I’ve ever seen such an extreme case… Miss, can you recall when exactly you were first bitten by your ex-master?”

[. . .]

[His eyebrows raise]

[V] “...1556…? My word… For clarity’s sake, the current year is 1794. .. You have been an emotional Mobius battery for two-hundred and thirty-eight years…”

[. . . ?]

[V] “Ah, the patient asked a basic question, some cognitive functions intact. To answer your question, a Mobius battery is lovely slang for an absolutely foul practice. In essence, a human is taken and, either through hypnosis, spell, or natural means, falls in love with their new vampire master. The master can draw on their emotions for sustenance with… rather chilling manipulation…”

[. . .]

[The doctor, you suppose, gives you a sympathetic look]

[V] “I imagine he did say he loved you, yes… When he needed a fix.”

[. . .]

[V] “Mmh… Patient unresponsive to emotional provocation… Potential longterm disassociation in pl-?”

[Pause.]

[He pauses again, seeming legitimately taken aback]

[V] “...Did you just ask me to get it over with…? Do you think I intend to kill you?”

[Pause…]

[V] “You know I’m a vampire with my own agenda… and you don’t want to be a science experiment anymore, so why not just drain you the old-fashioned way?”

[He ponders this]

[. . .]

[V] “...My dear… I am a vampire, yes. I’m also a quarter Dullahan but, ah, bit hard to tell since my head is still attached. But! I digress… What I am doesn’t matter, because my goal with all humans in your position is to see if they can be cured. Taken out of that perpetual loop of romantic highs, creeping paranoias, the thunderous fallout, and then having to wag your tail, knowing, knowing well, that he’d be breaking your heart again in, oh, give it five months…”

[. . .]

[V] “...He kept you so long… Look at how far he had to go to get an emotional response from you… All those scars and bruises… That ankle looks like it never set right and you’re malnourished…”

[. . .]

[SFX: The chains relaxing]

[You let yourself go limp in the chains again. Hoping he’ll leave]

[V] “Mmh… That’s alright. You can go limp in your chains if you wish. I won’t force anything on you. Though, I will add: I think you would at least be a touch more comfortable if you would allow me to heal you.”

[. . .]

[V] “... ‘I can’t stop you’ is not consent, my dear. It is an unfortunate truth, but not consent. May I cast a healing spell on you, from the Ruta school of magic, granted by the more benevolent gods or would you like me to not do that?”

[. . . ?]

[V] “Yes, I know a touch of the old magic… I have trained with many interesting people in my long life. Now, if you could tell me, when you are ready, yes or no to a healing spell.”

[. . .]

[V, a bit kinder] “...I know you are apathetic right now. You’re afraid, too, though it’s buried under years of abuse… Any time my hands move, your eyes dart to them, you won’t look me in the eye… Your whole body trembles and spasms with such fine, subtle quakes…”

[. . .]

[He cocks his head but remains relatively even in his delivery, though it spikes with macabre passion]

[V] “... ‘Am I some kind of sadist?’... Haha… ha… Perhaps not a traditional one, but… I suppose. My profession is trying to undo the brutality you went through in everyone I can, thus I am very intimate with their pain and what causes it. In that immense tragedy, there can be a sliver of pleasure. A new discovery from the twitch of a muscle! A new way a human learned to cope! Another gentle farewell as they leave my arms to go and live life anew, without pain… There is a word, oh, what is it… not in English…”

[. . .]

[V] “It is a practice in Japan where broken ceramics or pottery are pieced back together using gold. It’s the most beautiful comparison I can think of but I can’t actually think of the bloody word for it… Bother.”

[. . . ?]

[SFX: Him excitedly snapping his fingers once]

[V] “Kinsugi! Ah, you are a clever human!”

[. . .]

[V] “Ah, he let you spend a lot of time in his personal library? Well, that’s a positive, and I will note that books may be a good coping tool. I have plenty of my own, though they do tend to be a bit, ah, dry... Perhaps we can get you a journal or something.”

[. . .]

[V] “...I have to medically treat you, my dear. I am a doctor… I know you have no care toward your health or continued existence, at present, but it’s going to ultimately help your recovery. So, I must ask that you hold still.”

[Pause…]

[A] I love you… I love you, I love you, I know it hurts, just hold on a little longer… A little, little longer…

[You jolt in agony and the doctor rests a hand on your shoulder]

[V] “Ah, ah… It’s OK. You’re alright… Let’s focus on fixing your physical issues first, then we can begin the truly difficult work… You are covered in bruises and scars, some joints haven’t set right, and your muscles are twitching at random… You need care, and I will administer it to the best of my abilities.”

[Pause…]

[V] “No. You don’t have a choice. Now… Let’s get those chains off and start treating those wounds. Once the surface level things have been treated, then we shall have a break for lunch. I’ll make you a sandwich! Humans love sandwiches…”

[. . .]

[SFX: Fade out on the chains rattling as Viktor interacts with the Listener]
