[listener bumps into speaker]

“Oof!”

[books fall to the ground]

“Shhh, shhh!”

“It’s okay, it’s okay. Lower your voice. I’m just fine.”

[pause]

“No, no. It was my fault for having such a high pile of books… Miss Lisa always says to take them back on a cart, but for some reason all of them are taken by other librarians…”

[pause]

“Oh, you’ll help? Y-you really shouldn’t bother… it’s my job to do this.”

[pause]

“As an apology for bumping into me?”

“Umm… I guess so…”

“Yeah. That’s okay. Th-Thank you.”

[rustling]

“Yes, I am new. I started working here just a week ago.”

“What about you, actually? I frequented this library before I started working here… your face doesn’t seem familiar.”

[pause]

“Oh, you just moved here?”

[pause]

“Wow, just a few weeks ago, huh? No wonder I didn’t see you around.”

“How are you liking our town so far…? It’s nice and quiet here, right?”

[pause]

“Pfft–! I don’t mean the library…! I mean this town as a whole!”

“Well… I guess the library is nice and quiet too.”

“You can hand me those books.”

[pause]

“Huh? You want to help me put these away?”

“Are you sure…? You looked like you were in the middle of something…”

[pause]

“You were going to put a book away yourself?”

“Ah, I–I see! Then, I guess there’s no harm in you tagging along…”

[walking]

“What were you reading earlier, by the way…?”

[pause]

“Oh, really? That book’s my favorite… it’s quite popular too.”

“I hear the author of that book is writing a sequel too! I hope they resolve… oh wait, I shouldn’t spoil it for you!”

“Sorry… I get really excited whenever I get the chance to talk about books I like…”

[pause]

“Hm? You finished it?”

“Oh, phew… still, I shouldn’t be talking about it! If anyone accidentally overhears, I’d spoil the story for them! It’s the kind of book that needs to be experienced!”

[pause]

“Yeah… I guess being passionate about reading is a good quality for a librarian to have…”

“By the way, here’s the shelf where that book goes. Right between the black and red books there…”

[shuffling]

“Mhm, that’s it.”

“Aaaand the shelf these books go on is right over there!”

[rustling]

“Huh? Oh, y-you don’t need to help…!”

[pause]

“Oh, y-you’re just setting down the books you were carrying for me…”

“Sorry…”

[pause]

“Well I mean… I’ve been quite a lot of trouble to you, haven’t I…? Bumping into you, and then getting all panicky when you tried to help out…”

[pause]

“I know, I know, you offered, but I still feel like I did something wrong…”

[thinking]

“Oh! I know!”

“I get off my shift in fifteen minutes, and there’s a really good coffee shop down the street. How about I buy you a coffee as thanks?”

[pause]

“I insist! P-Plus… I kinda wanna know what you thought about that book…”

“If anything, think of it as… a book club! A tiny one. With just the two of us!”

[pause]

“You’d like that? Great!”

“I just need to finish reshelving these books first…”
