It seems like an honestly perfect evening... until your husband asks you a single question. A question that has made you wonder about your marriage to your high school sweetheart and if it has a future... or not.

[J] = Jack, your protective big bro

[Scene opens outside the Listener’s home]

[SFX: Jack’s truck parking in the driveway]

[Your brother parks carefully in your driveway, brow set]

[J] “...Are you sure you want to be alone with him? You nearly…”

[Pause…]

[Your brother sighs deeply but nods]

[J] “I know you’re strong… but I also know you never really know someone, no matter how much you love them, and if he puts his hands on you, PJ, I’ll kill him.”

[Pause…]

[You give your brother another hug and he takes the opportunity to ruffle your hair]

[J] “...Just be careful. I’m fifteen minutes away if you need me.”

[Pause <3]

[J] “Eugh, gross… Love you, too.”

[Pause…]

[J] “Yeah… Night, PJ.”

[SFX: The Listener exiting the vehicle and going inside while Jack drives off]

[The moment you step in, your husband zooms over to you, eyes red and head hung]

[K] “Oh, baby! Thank God, you made it home safe-!”

[Pause.]

[He starts crying all over again and you point to the couch. The hurt should be there, but there’s nothing:]

[K] “O-OK… I’m sitting…”

[...]

[You sit across from him and you can tell that even that simple action is like a slap in the face]

[Pause]

[K] “...Y-You have questions… O-OK…”

[Pause?]

[K] “I’ve never been unfaithful. Not once. You can go through my phone if you want!”

[Pause…]

[He quiets, looking away in shame]

[K] “...You don’t want to… OK…”

[Pause.]

[He shuts his eyes, in Hell]

[K] “I… shouldn’t have said what I said about Chelsea… I know you hate her. I know she tried to ruin your life, every chance she got, and I know that it still hurts. I just… I have this lingering sense that I got married too young and I missed out any time I think about it…”

[Pause?]

[K] “...Chelsea reached out to me on social media…”

[...]

[Of all the people you thought you could hate… he wasn’t one of them until this moment]

[K] “S-She just asked how we were!”

[Pause.]

[K] “I did have her blocked! I was just curious-”.

[...]

[He shuts up, shaking. Your mother really did do a number on him]

[K, quiet] “...I’m sorry…”

[...]

[You smile the sweetest smile]

[Pause]

[Your husband looks at you, startled]

[K] “Wait… You’re really OK opening up the marriage…?”

[Pause…]

[K] “But there has to be rules… OK, um… What were you thinking?”

[You lay it out for him and watch to see how much squirming and writhing he’s willing to do under your watchful eye]

[Long Pause]

[K] “...No lying, we have to tell each other about every partner, no catching feelings… and no Chelsea…”

[Pause]

[He holds his hands up for peace]

[K] “Baby, I swear to you, I am FINE without Chelsea in our lives… She tried to ruin mine too, remember?”

[Pause.]

[He recoils as though slapped]

[K] “...You’re right… It is pathetic of me to want her attention… To put her on this weird pedestal… I’ll block her again.”

[Pause.]

[He looks at you, startled, eyes tearing up again]

[K] “Baby, we’ve been together since high school… Are you seriously saying you’d divorce me over me interacting with her? I haven’t but… Jesus Christ, that’s our whole marriage!”

[Pause?]

[K] “Of course she’s not worth our marriage!”

[Pause.]

[K] “Then I know where we stand… Fuck… Can we please cuddle? I got so fucking scared when you left… I tried to go after you but your Mom tore me a new one. Then my Dad a new one, Christ… Your brother about pulled a fucking knife on me!”

[Pause.]

[Your husband freezes, eyes wide]

[K] “...You nearly walked into the river…? Christ, what have I fucking done?! One stupid request and…”

[He sobs and sobs and sobs. You feel nothing]

[Pause…]

[K, pathetic but hopeful] “...We can cuddle? Oh, thank you, sweetie. Thank you so much, you’re so sweet to me!”

[He helps you upstairs, hovering like a protective, annoying wasp. It turns your stomach each time his hand touches your lower back]

[SFX: Them walking upstairs and the Listener lying down]

[K] “Here you go, PJ… Rest. I’m going to grab a shower and then I’ll snuggle up, OK?”

[Pause <3]

[He smiles weakly before vanishing into the bathroom, still crying to himself. Pathetic.]

[Pause…]

[SFX: Your phone going off]

[You check it while Ky goes to clean himself up. It’s Jack]

[J] “Yo. Guess who wanted to be put at the front of the list for your dating rota?”

[Pause?]

[Note: Feel free to add typing/texting and phone notifications between, if you’d like. Some folks find it annoying so I will leave it optional]

[J] “The one and only Dr. Romero!”

[Pause!]

[J] “Dude, I TOLD you he was so down bad for you. He got into swim trunks and bro couldn’t even swim, just to impress you. Why do you think he couldn’t face you for three months after nearly drowning, LOL. I told him an edited version and he practically pleaded with me to put in a good word.”

[Pause…]

[J] “I’m not being mean! I’m just fielding any potential losers who would waste your time. He’s a doctor, he’s rich, he speaks three languages and he values family. Oh, remember that lifeguard that fell out of his chair post when you walked by?”

[Pause???]

[J] “Hoho, yeah… He’s totally into it. Even flexed for me! Had to tell him that, as bisexual as I am, he was showing off the wrong person, heh heh. The poor guy turned red as a tomato.”

[Pause!]

[J] “I AM being nice!!! I swear, you have a fetish for bumbling idiots that hurt themselves every time you’re around!”

[Pause.]

[J] “I do not have a fetish for messing with your suitors.”

[Pause!]

[J] “Ooh, I’m gonna tell Mom that you told me to eat your ass, ooooohhhh!”

[Pause…]

[J] “Yeah, yeah, go deal with the man baby. Night, PJ.”

[SFX: The phone being set down/Ky emerging from the bathroom]

[Your husband pads out, head still hung. He crawls into bed and right into your arms, same as he always does when he’s low]

[SFX: The bed reacting to his weight]

[K] “I really am so sorry… You’ve always been so wonderful to me, I don’t know why I got so hung up on her…”

[...]

[You force yourself to stroke his back, even though all of you feels numb to this creature in your arms]

[K, with a soft sigh] “...Thank you for hearing me out. Thank you for helping me navigate this… I love you so much, PJ, I… I can’t even imagine a life without you…”

[Pause…]

[K] “Can I sleep in your arms…? Please?”

[...]

[You suppose…]

[K] “Thank you, sweetheart… I love you so, so much.”

[...]

[You mutter it back. It seems to be enough for him, for now]
