(muffled whimpering) “Oh my god, oh my god, they’re gonna be so mad, I– it’s such a mess–”

[SFX: footsteps]

[gasp]

[SFX: scrambles to his feet]

“A-Ah… honey… you’re home…”

[pause]

“No! No. I’m not hurt. Why would you… think that I was hurt?”

[pause]

“I– I hide in the corner on other occasions too! Y-you know… when I get overwhelmed, or stressed out, or when I… when I shift…”

[pause]

“O-Okay… I do have a lot on my mind, but I… I’m not hurt. I’m okay.”

[SFX: rustling]

“You… want to know what happened…”

[short pause]

“Just… promise you won’t get mad at me…?”

[pause]

“... Thank you.”

“I um…”

“You know how… I’ve been shifting involuntarily a lot more often…?”

[pause]

“No, I… thanks to you, I’ve become a lot more confident in my self-control…”

“I… I at least know now that even if I lose myself… I’d never hurt you.”

“But I–I did something else…”

[pause]

“Well… y-you know that one motorcycle our neighbor has…?”

[pause]

(very quickly) “... I shifted in my sleep while I was napping and tore up our bedsheets when our neighbor revved up the motorcycle, please don’t be mad at me!”

“I wanted to clean it up before you got home, but I started panicking, and when I panic I shift even more and I just ended up tearing the sheets more and…”

[short pause]

(holding back tears) “... There’s feathers all over the room now…”

“I–I know I said that I wanted to protect you using this form, but all I’ve been doing is causing trouble! I–I shed fur all over the house last summer, a-and when you tried to vacuum it I hid under the couch like a coward because my hearing is so sensitive now, a-and I just haven’t been any help to you at all, I–”

[SFX: listener pulls him into a hug]

“Ah–”

[SFX: listener scratches him behind the ears]

“Mmm… mmmm…”

[pause]

“Y-Yeah… I… I can… take deep breaths…”

[a few deep breaths]

[long pause, scratches continue]

“... Thank you.”

[scratches stop]

[rustling]

“... You… really aren’t angry at me…?”

[pause]

“T-To tell you the truth… I… I still have nightmares about the day I revealed all of this to you.”

[pause]

“I just… wh-what if you had really walked away…?”

“What if… in that moment… I wasn’t able to control myself… and I hurt you…? What if you just… left, and I was never able to explain myself to you? What if you lived on, thinking that I had cheated on you…?”

“... I never… want to hurt you like that ever again. Even if it was a misunderstanding…”

“... That’s why I’m so scared.”

[pause]

“I know… I know by now that I won’t hurt you even in werewolf form.”

“... But I still made you clean up after all my fur… and all the things I broke… because I was shifted and couldn’t help.”

(hollow laugh) “We even moved into a house because of me… I must have set our savings back by years, just replacing the things I broke…”

“... Sometimes, I… I feel like I’m nothing more than… just another proble–”

[SFX: listener hugs him tight]

“Mmph?!”

“H-Hey, what–”

[SFX: scratches behind the ears]

“Ah… mmm…”

[long pause, scratches continue]

“... You really know how to break off a train of negative thought, don’t you, honey…?”

[SFX: scratchies continue]

“... Mhm… I know… I know you love me…”

“... I love you too.”

[long pause]

“No! I… I can help clean up this time! I’ve calmed down enough… I don’t think I’ll be shifting while I help you.”

“... Your presence… it helps me stay in control of myself.”

[SFX: door opens]

[pause]

(quietly) “I know it’s bad…”

[pause]

“You’re sure you’re not mad…?”

[pause]

“... You’re right. What matters is that we pick up the pieces.”

“I’ll take this end of the room…”

[SFX: footsteps, fabric rustling]

“... H-Huh?! No! Y-You don’t have to tell the neighbor to keep it down! It’s his motorcycle!”

“I–It would just be bothering him, really! A–And it was my fault that this happened anyways, so you really don’t-”

[pause]

“I know, if he hadn’t revved up his motorcycle, I wouldn’t have gotten startled and torn up the sheets, but…”

[SFX: buries head in hands]

“... I think I’m acting more like a scared cat than the strong werewolf I wanted to be like…”

[pause]

“Come on, don’t tease me…! I… I wanted to be big and strong so that I could protect you for a change…!”

“... And yet here I am, making you clean up after my messes again…”

[pause]

“Huh? What do you mean?”

[pause]

“You… but…”

“... Why do you think I’m so strong…?”

“... Oh.”

“B-Because… I had the strength to stay in control… and admit my faults…?”

“I–I didn’t do much! I just… did what I thought was best…!”

[SFX: embarrassed grumbling]

“Why do you always have to get the last word in…!”

“Now I’m a blushing mess!”

[SFX: he giggles]

“Yeah… yeah. I… you did make me feel better.”

“Huh? What was that?”

“Wh-What do you mean by that?! I– you want to sleep on me?! What does that…!”

“... Oh… s-since I destroyed the sheets… you want to use my wolf form as a bed tonight…?”

“I… umm…”

“No, I… I’d be okay with that. I’d like that a lot, actually.”

“I’m just… a little embarrassed…”

“... But that’s not a bad idea at all.”

[pause]

“Yeah. I can shift… decently on command now.”

“... I’d be happy to be your mattress tonight…”

(flustered noises) “No, no! I– I know it sounded really cheesy, s-stop giggling like that!”

[he laughs]

“You… you really do always need to get in the last word…”
