The Owl King's Summer

Part 1

Context: It was your first day at a new school, and the first words you heard after 'Welcome' were 'Don't talk to the boy with the scars!'. It was repeated by everyone, but no one would explain why. You decided to learn for yourself by bringing him his lunch, and... you made a friend! His name is Eli, and he's apparently the Devil himself. You... aren't so sure about that, though.

[E] = Eli, your masked boi

[J] = Jake, the friendly himbo

[Scene opens at the prom]

[SFX: Chatter/faint prom music/and footsteps]

[You hold tight to Eli’s hand as you head for the gymnasium. You’re not sure which of you is more nervous]

[E] “Well… Here we are… Nervous?”

[Pause…]

[E] “Hey.”

[His voice turns softer. More assuring]

[E] “You look incredible, OK? And I’m not going anywhere. I promise.”

[Pause <3]

[SFX: The gym doors opening/Fitting prom music]

[You enter together and some looks are thrown your way. Then more. But, Eli stays true to his word, and stays nearby]

[E] “Well… Shall we show them how a dance is properly done, 1950s style?”

[Pause!]

[While the others are mostly either going wild or dancing awkwardly, you and Eli are in perfect sync]

[E] “There you go… The music is a little faster than the crooning Big Band stuff we have at home, but you got it.”

[Pause <3]

[He chuckles]

[E] “...You picked out a good suit for me, yeah… I’m glad you think it looks nice…”

[He pauses, head tilting and voice becoming softer]

[Pause?]

[E] “...You’re so beautiful… It’s like getting stabbed in the heart every time I look at you, and imagine all the things we’re going to do together after graduation… I hope we get to see the world, you know? I hope I get to make you smile every day…”

[... <3]

[E] “...This was a lot less awkward before I realized I was in love with you, you know? Now I’m all tongue-tied and sheepish… Shit sucks.”

[A familiar voice calls out across the dance floor]

[J] “Yo, Eli!”

[E] “Sup, Jake?”

[J, excited] “Yo, they’re doing a horror movie marathon at the drive-thru! Y’all should come after! Popcorn is on me!”

[E, laughing] “You’re still hellbent on finding a movie that scares me, huh? You’re not winning that twenty-dollar bet!”

[J, also laughing] “Oh, I SO am! Get back to your date, dude, but think about it, OK??”

[Eli gives him a thumbs-up before returning to the dance]

[E] “...I can’t believe he turned out to be nice… I can’t believe that… so many people have been approaching me now… Unafraid. Curious and, yes, a little pushy, but… But with that little push you gave, they’re finally seeing me as something else…”

[Pause <3]

[E] “...I’m proud of you, too… I hope you know that… You changed my life, just by being kind. It almost feels a little cheesy, hm? I mean, I don’t know what could make it cheesier… Wait, yes I do.”

[Pause <3??]

[He takes a deep breath and you see him withdraw a velvet box from his pocket. Unfortunately, so do some nearby girls who immediately begin to muffle gasps]

[E] “Oh, calm down, Sandra! I’m not proposing just yet, Christ. I’m eighteen, they’re seventeen, I think there’s time, you know?”

[SFX: Sandra getting her shit together]

[Pause?]

[E] “It’s not a ring, but… It’s a promise.”

[He opens the box and you see a beautiful opal bracelet inside placed in silver cat charms]

[...Pause <3]

[E] “...The kitty-cat opal bracelet, yeah… It was my grandmother’s. But I know she’d approve of me giving it to you until I can afford a promise ring… Think of it as being welcomed into a family of ghosts, I suppose, but the ghosts adore you.”

[You jump into his arms and he laughs]

[Pause! <3 <3 <3]

[E] “Hey, hey, easy! Heh… Here…”

[SFX: Eli affixing the bracelet

[E] “Stunning… The bracelet is alright too, I guess.”

[Pause <3]

[He chuckles, tucks the box away, and puts his arms back around you]

[E] “Hmhm, fine… We can go back to dancing… What do you think? Want to check out the drive-thru?”

[Pause <3]

[He smiles. The mask is on but you know it by his body language, now]

[E] “Cool.”

[SFX: Fade out on the prom music carrying on]

Scene transition - The Drive-Thru

[Fade in with B-movie BG noise]

[Note: The scene/movie referenced is the ‘Rec. Room’ Scene from - Tremors. This one in particular]

[You sit in Eli’s truck next to him, watching the movie on screen in fascination]

[...]

[E] “Ooh, you think Burt and Heather are dead, do you?”

[SFX: Faint, movie gunshots]

[...!]

[Eli giggles and a great cheer goes up around from the crowd]

[PAUSE!!!]

[E] “I told you this was the best movie ever! Wait… Wait for it, wait for the gun wall…”

[SFX: The GUN W A L L/another holler of redneck, smalltown appreciation]

[Pause!!]

[He laughs and ‘sneaks’ an arm around you]

[E] “By the way… Coach approved the quote for the football gear. I think we’re gonna have a busy summer filling our first big order, huh?”

[Pause!!]

[E] “Hey, easy… You work your ass off already, you don’t need to be raring to go. It’s the Owl King’s summer as well. He rewards a bit of vacationing.”

[Pause?]

[E] “Who is the Owl King? Enh, an urban legend. I’ll tell you the whole story sometime but it used to be rumored he’d snatch up any kids wandering without their parents or guardians. One swoop and they’re gone to his dinner table… The ones that escaped would have terrible claw marks on their arm and would come running out of the woods, screaming and mad. Not sure why the town fell in love with that story but, meh, he makes a cool mascot.”

[...]

[E] “Aw, c’mon, Tabby, he’s not real… Besides, you always have a guardian with you. Me!”

[Pause <3]

[E] “...Look, I know you’re leery of your parents, but you’ll be eighteen by the end of summer, and they won’t be able to force you to do ANYTHING anymore. OK? We just need to lay low, work on this order, and chill.”

[...?]

[E] “Of course, I promise. You think I’m gonna let anything happen to you after you went through the trouble of stealing my heart?”

[Pause <3]

[SFX: Faint bits of the movie to fill a [Pause] of VA’s discretion]

[...?]

[E] “I found a couple of therapists that I can afford, yeah… Listen, I… I’m sorry again that I had that episode and scared you. I know you trust me, but I still ran at you with a rifle… I’d honestly thought I’d wake up the next morning and you’d be gone…”

[Pause?]

[E] “Yes, even after I said I loved you… Love doesn’t trump a rifle in your face, Tabby, you remember that.”

[Pause <3]

[He chuckles a little and gently squeezes you against him]

[E] “You’re a cutie… C’mon, I know you want to know if they make it or not. Let’s worry about the future later, huh? Jake did say popcorn was on him…”

[Pause <3]

[Fade out on Tremors / B-movie footage of your choice]
