The royal heir and the kingdomās most renowned swordsmith getting married is a practical arrangement, one to solidify their loyalty in doing business with only each other. But, perhaps this was the final push to get the two from separate worlds to finally connect after years of pining from afar. (~2700 words)

FADE IN
INT. ONE OF THE PALACESāS STUDY ROOMS- AFTERNOON.
Soft sunlight trickles through the window curtains of the room, its warmth the complete opposite of the awkward coldness between the HEIR and the LISTENER. They stand face to face, not too close nor far apart.
HEIR
(attempting not to be stiff)
Hello. As you are already aware, I am -insert name here-, the royal heir to the throne. Itās certainly interesting to see you out of your swordsmith uniform.
(chuckling)
Much less having our first official conversation. Iām glad my parents didnāt plan an extravagant wedding, especially considering the situation.
(normal)
It was a bit unexpected, but I say we should make the most out of the arrangement.
(cold)
[...]
HEIR
(attempting to keep the conversation friendly)
Oh. We donāt have to go back to our usual lives immediately after we wed, but such a practical proposal makes sense coming from you.
(after a sigh, reminiscing)
Itās true that this is a business deal, itās been years of collaboration between our families, so it only makes sense theyād turn to this to solidify loyalty to one another.
(chuckling)
At least this isnāt a strictly arranged marriageā¦ just more of a pressure-from-business-benefits one!
(normal)
We can always back out, you knowā¦
[...]
HEIR
Alright then.
(teasing)
We can at least remain as friendly partners, canāt we?
(normal)
But honestly, do you really just want to part ways right after the paper signage?
(cold)
[...]
HEIR
(surprised, chuckling)
Me? Flirtatious?
(normal)
I see my reputation precedes me. Iām usually described as charismatic. After all, one needs to handle conversations and exchanges in a certain way. But, I truly believe a companionship beyond business can do us both some good! I think we have a lot more in common than you think.
[...]
HEIR
(slightly disappointed)
If you insist. Weāll remain professional then, does that work?
[...]
HEIR
Alright. Well, we should head to the meeting room to sign the agreements, theyāre already waiting for us.
The two make their way through the halls to the meeting room.
INT. ROYAL MEETING ROOM.
The two sit side by side to sign the documents. Once finished, the listener immediately stands.
HEIR
And there we have it. We're officially married.
[...]
HEIR
(trying to mask their disappointment)
So soon? Well, if thatās what youād likeā¦
(normal)
I hope our schedules align soon.
TIME JUMP
INT. THE LISTENERāS SWORD MANUFACTURING WORKPLACE.
Nervous but longing to see them again, the heir lightly knocks on the listenerās office door.
HEIR
Hello? Itās -insert name here-. May I come in?
[...]
The heir steps into the office, closing the door behind them.
HEIR
Thank you. Itās only been a few days and I hope I didnāt come at a bad time Iā¦ Were you about to go somewhere? I heard you spend nearly all day in your workplace in generalā¦ were you going to take a break?
(nervous)
[...]
HEIR
(chuckling)
āNo?ā
(teasing)
Now Iām very intrigued. You do realize how mysterious this sounds, right? Weāve just wed, where could you possibly be sneaking off to?
[...]
HEIR
(slightly embarrassed)
I guess that makes two of us, I wanted to see you too. Did you have something you wanted to discuss orā¦
[...]
HEIR
T-thereās no need to apologize! Our first interaction wasā¦ understandable. I didnāt think you were that cold. I wanted to see you because, well, I wanted to see you, to get to know you. I understand you wanted our relationship to be professional butā¦
[...?]
HEIR
Oh, Iād love to see what youāre working on.
They come closer to the listenerās desk and find a beautiful and intricate sword on top, the blade engraved with swirls and the hilt just as detailed.
HEIR (CONTāD)
Is this sword a new design? Iām assuming youāre putting extra care into this since itās on your desk.
(in awe)
Itās so detailed, from the hilt to the blade and point. Your familyās work is always so amazing, it only makes sense why my family favors it, and why your company is the most renowned in the land! How do you always manage to find the right balance of practicality and beauty?
[...]
HEIR
That is truly amazing. You must have tons of experience both creating and wielding a weapon. Whatās your weapon of choice? A bow? Long sword? Rapier? Itās so admirable how youāre able to create such a broad range.
[...]
HEIR
What?! Really? I assumed that since you are so independent and confident in your abilities you must be a strong warrior. You mean to say you donāt actually use your weapons? Why?
[...]
HEIR
Thatās understandable, being more interested in the art. I bet youāve still got great skill in battle.
(flirty)
I have to say, knowing this makes you even more endearing. Iām glad I stopped by, or else I could have missed out on a moment as lovely as this.
[...]
HEIR
(dramatically, chuckling)
Me? Flirting? Heavens forbid!
(teasing)
All I did was offer you a compliment. Iām just trying to be a friendly and supportive partner. Be prepared for many more compliments, my dear. We are bound for life after all.
(normal)
Can you tell me a bit more about the sword on your desk? Itās justā¦ so beautiful, itās hard to find any other way to describe it! Can I get a better look?
[...]
The heir comes even closer to inspect the sword in more detail, even grazing their fingers over the engravings.
HEIR
Thank you.
(in awe)
These engravings, theyāre so elegant and mesmerizing! I canāt imagine how much time and patience youāve put into this design, and it seems just as steady and reliable as all the others youāve created.
(normal)
No wonder your parents passed the company to you at such a young age, youāve definitely got the skill!
(teasing)
Youāre so intimidating, but youāre a total softie, arenāt you?
(normal)
I mean, youāve taken over the company not only because you were deemed worthy enough, but also because you wanted your parents to retire.
(flustered)
[...?!]
HEIR
(chuckling)
How could I not know about that?
(teasing)
Iāve got to do my research about my lovely partner, after all. Thereās no need to be shy about it. Youāre obviously very caring and passionateā¦ and now that I know youāre not a fan of engaging in combat, youāre an even bigger softie! Youāre adorable, you know.
(pause, normal)
Is there something else on your mind?
[...]
They take the sword from the desk and hand it to them as a gift.
HEIR
What? I canāt accept this! Youāve put so much care into this sword!
[...]
HEIR
You reallyā¦?
(softly)
I was wondering why it seemed so familiar to the other swords Iāve wieldedā¦ did you take the time to figure out which swords I liked the mostā¦ and then somehow merge them into a single design... just for me?
(laughing, teasing)
Did you feel that bad about being cold to me?
(flustered)
[...!]
HEIR
(laughing)
Okay, okay!
(normal)
You really are too cute. Iāll take good care of it. How would you like me to handle this, having it on display or wielding it?
[...]
HEIR
Iāll do just that then, a balance of both. Iāll be honest, this is the mostā¦ unique and thoughtful gift Iāve ever received. Thank you.
(pause)
I know weāve got heavily conflicting schedules but I was hoping we could see each other again.
[...]
HEIR
Sounds perfect. Iāll be available at that time too. I can meet you at your place and we can head somewhere I know together. Just keep in mind that we will be doing a bit of walking in the forest. Iāll see you in a few days then! Donāt overwork yourself!
TIMESKIP
EXT. LISTENERāS HOME- AFTERNOON.
Excited to see them again, there is a kick in their step when the heir is making their way to the listenerās door. They lightly knock and the listener quickly whips open the door from their own excitement.
HEIR
(flirty)
Why, hello. Itās lovely to see you again. Are you ready?
[...]
HEIR
(embarrassed)
Am I? Iām sorry, I canāt help but stare when youāre in such casual clothing. Iām so used to seeing you so uptight. You look great by the way.
(normal)
Letās go then, shall we?
The two walk towards the forest just outside the kingdom gates.
HEIR
It seems so cozy living out here. Iām sure you can pop in and out of the forest whenever youād like. Do you?
[...]
HEIR
Iām glad we are both nature lovers then! I spend a good amount of time tending to the palace gardens, but sometimes I like to sneak off to the forest nearby as well.
(chuckling)
Just donāt tell anyone.
(normal)
You know, I hardly ever saw you before we got married. I mean, I always heard that youāre super hardworking and regularly advise and check up on your workers during their shifts. Do you spend most of your time working?
[...]
HEIR
I see.
(teasing)
Then Iāve got to pop in some visits every now and then to make sure youāre taking enough breaks! It is now one of my duties to take care of you now that weāre married, after all.
[...]
HEIR
Hmm? Oh. Wellā¦
(after a sigh)
As for me, Iām always busy and even when I do āfunā activities like training or attending parties, they are still very draining.
(playful)
Iāll let you in on a secret. After Iām done for the day and washed up and such, I literally have to lay in bed for sometimes hours before I can do anything else, even just read a book before bed.
(normal)
The spot I mentioned is a little ways further.
EXT. EXPANSIVE FOREST.
The two continue walking for a bit more before they arrive at a hill with a lovely view, on the grass, there is a spread picnic blanket and various dishes underneath the shade of a tree.
HEIR (CONTāD)
And here we are. I hope you like the dishes Iāve spread out, I made them myself.
(chuckling)
I might have gone a little overboard. But I wanted to make this special.
[...]
HEIR
Really?
(chuckling)
If youāve been here a lot too, how have we never run into each other?
[...]
HEIR
Huh? Then why didnāt you say hello? Donāt tell me you were just being considerate by leaving me to relax here.
(teasing)
Or, were you too shy? Or evenā¦ that you enjoy stalking me from afar?
[...]
HEIR
(laughing)
You mean a mixture of all three? You really are something.
(normal)
Come on, letās have a seat.
They sit side by side on the blanket.
HEIR (CONTāD)
Can I ask why you work so hard all of the time? Of course, I fully support you being so ambitious but Iām wonderingā¦ if thereās more to it.
(long pause)
[...]
HEIR
Thatās understandableā¦ with that much pressure on you, I donāt think you can escape that feeling of needing to prove yourself. If people overlook others in general then theyāre just asses, so donāt let that get you down. Besides, you are already remarkable at what you do.
[...]
HEIR
(chuckling)
I guess itās only fair that youāre curious.
(dramatically)
Hmmā¦ what could I be hiding under a mask while being such a charismatic future ruler of the kingdom?
(chuckling)
Want to lie down?
The two lie down and enjoy a moment of stillness appreciating the soft breeze ruffling the leaves above them.
HEIR (CONTāD)
(softly)
Honestly? Iām exhausted. All of the time. Being tired isnāt a mood or feeling to me anymore, itās a personality trait. I am tired. Every second of the day.
(after a sigh)
Burnout is inevitable. Iāve hit it numerous times. Sometimes, I get paranoid when itāll strike me next. But, I canāt let it just take over me, Iāve got a million other things to do. I might as well use one of them to distract me until my burnout for the other passes.
[...!]
HEIR
(embarrassed)
Hmm. Youāre really sweet. Youāre just as admirable and strong, I really appreciate you saying all of that though.
(teasing)
I guess we both have to make sure one another takes breaks. I wouldnāt mind if you came around and snatched me from work every now and then.
(pause, after a content sigh)
I think I was right, we are similar after all.
(chuckling)
Complicated.
They both turn to lie on their side and they properly face each other.
HEIR (CONTāD)
(softly)
But know this, I see you. All of you. For who you are. And I'll always be here for you. I am so glad we can talk to each other so openly like this. Iā¦ wish we could have properly met sooner and become good friends then, but either way, Iām glad we get the chance now.
[...]
HEIR
Hmm. Iām glad you feel the same.
(long pause, softly)
I really look forward to getting to know you more. I feel excited, even. I donāt think Iāve felt this way about anyone before.
(pause, chuckling and teasing)
Aw, is that too forward? I didnāt mean to make you flustered, but that blush does look good on you, you know. I wonder what other sides of you Iāll get to see.
(flustered)
[...!]
HEIR
Alright, alright. Iāll take it easy on you. For now. We have all the time in the world and youāre stuck with me for the rest of our lives. Can I ask one last question?
[...]
HEIR
Well, Iām wonderingā¦ is there another reason besides business benefits that you agreed to marry me? As for me, I feel like Iāve been admiring you from afar ever since our families began collaborating with each other years ago. Whether I saw you being completely unamused at the royal parties my family has invited yours to, or when Iād see you watch from the sidelines during my training session alongside our knights, how youād take notes on how to improve your already perfect designs, Iād always be drawn to wanting to talk to you.
(softly, shyly)
Out of everyone, only you have ever made me so nervous to approach. So, when I was offered the opportunity to be with you, I couldnāt decline. I knew Iād regret it until the end of time if I didnāt try.
(pause)
So, what about you?
(long pause)
[...]
HEIR
(flustered)
Really? Iā¦
(teasing)
Oho~? So then, you found my āflirtatiousā demeanor intriguing? Am I hearing that right? Then, were you being so cold because you were nervous? How cute!
(pause, normal)
But I completely understand, weāre from separate worlds after all and this was the perfect reason to finally connect.
(laughing)
How in the heck did it take so long if weāve both been feeling the same way?
(playfully)
Okay, one more question. I promise itāll be the last one for sure!
(pause, softly)
Wellā¦ after opening up like this to one another and now knowing how weāve been interested in each other for some timeā¦ do you think we could ever be something more than friends? I will take no offense if not, butā¦ I canāt help but wonder.
[...]
HEIR
(happily sighing, breathy chuckling)
Then, Iāll make the most out of this chance.
(flirtatious)
And perhaps, I can be more bold. If you can take it, that is.
(pause, teasing)
I see that curious look on your face, are you growing more charmed by my flirting by the second?
(a bit flustered)
Alight then, Iāll say whatās on my mind. May Iā¦ can weā¦ kiss?
[...]
HEIR
(breathy chuckle)
Hmm, Iāve wanted for so long, I- mmph!
They get cut off by the listenerās impatient kiss.
HEIR (CONTāD)
(flirty to try and remain composed)
Heh, I could get used to this bold side of yours. Iām glad to see all of you.
They kiss some more and for longer.
HEIR (CONTāD)
(softly)
Thenā¦ letās take it slow. We arenāt obligated to inform our families how our relationship is progressing.
(chuckling)
Like Iāve said, weāve got the rest of our lives together, after all.
FADE OUT
