[Scene opens in an ambulance]

[SFX: The doors closing and the ambulance taking off]

[It’s your first ride of one of your first shifts at this new hospital. A handsome but tired-looking gent greets you:]

[E] “Hey. Happy first ride, Newbie. Name’s Emmett, I’m one of the managers on staff, and I’ll be showing you around the city, OK?”

[Pause!]

[E] “Great! You’ve met Daryl already, right? He’s the other fleet manager.”

[Pause]

[E] “Yeah, he’s the donut-beard guy, hehe… He’s Donut-Beard, I’m the wife guy, and Kay is Scottish. I guess that’s enough for us to be the Three Stooges to the hospital director, hehe. Mohammed’s a nice guy, though. Never skimps on staff food.”

[Pause!]

[E] “Mmhm… So, this exit here is the quickest one to the interstate. It’s really backed up during your standard rush hours. You’ll want to avoid it if possible during those times. People in this city can be so damned entitled that they won’t even move for an ambulance at times, hmhm… Can you believe that?”

[Pause…]

[E] “Heh… Yeah. It’s kind of good to know that the routes are all ones I know by heart, even if I’m not on the road as much… Here, this is a backway around the city. It’s normally closed off but the man that owns the fish processing plant at the end of the road is OK with us using it in emergencies.”

[Pause…?]

[His eyes are sharp yet checked out. A gentle smile ghosts his lips as he drives]

[E] “Eheh… I’m sure the missus will be glad to have a little space to herself with me out. God knows I dote over her… I try not to, but… since she got sick, it’s been hard. Sorry to trauma dump… Told you I was the wife guy, hehe…”

[Pause?]

[SFX: Driving over a bumpy road]

[E] “What is she ill with? Well… no one is sure. Some of the best doctors in the country have looked at her and couldn’t figure it out… She’s always so tired… her memory goes in and out. She’s not hostile. She normally knows where she is, but that could be just because she’s almost always in bed, poor love…”

[Pause…]

[E] “Thank you for your condolences… I just pray it’s not too hard for her. Most of the time she’s almost playful about it. ‘Who is this handsome man in teddy bear PJs?’ or ‘When did you style your hair?’ after I’ve just rolled out of bed… She is a character, hmhm.”

[Pause?]

[SFX: Him stopping at a traffic signal]

[E] “When did we meet? Man…We were both eighteen. Our respective parents met during one of their events, we got introduced, and, well… our parents all died in the same accident only a year later…”

[...]

[Emmett laughs, taking a left as the light finally lights]

[E] “It’s OK… ‘Shit’ is a pretty accurate descriptor… We leaned on each other during that time… I learned that we both had issues with my mother but had both bonded with her father, and we bonded over that. She took care of me… Made sure I remembered to eat, sleep, and bathe and kept me on course… I owe her so much…”

[Pause…]

[E] “No… I wish I could say I treated her better… I was moody. An angst ball and I only had her to throw it all at… I’ve apologized so many times, and she’s forgiven me, but it… Eheh… Are you sure you want to be an EMT? You’ve got therapist vibes going on…”

[Pause!]

[E] “I appreciate it… but I also don’t want work to become awkward, you know? I’m incredibly privileged that they allow me to do a work-from-home schedule so often. Less time in the field, yes, but more time training those that will be.”

[Pause]

[E] “Well, again, I appreciate it… I love my Cuddle Bug so much… I just want to do right by her until and after she’s better… I just want her to be happy, but sometimes she doesn’t understand that bad things need to happen for that… Some of the medication makes her tummy hurt, some of the procedures are rough, and it kills me to see her struggle… but a man can pray, right?”

[His heartbroken expression is certainly touching. And very convincing]

[Pause…]

[SFX: The road smoothing out]

[E] “...Thanks for listening, Newbie. Here, this gas station over here gives us a nice discount since we stay helping them. Mind watching the amby while I grab us some snacks?”

[Pause!]

[E] “10-4. Be back in a second.”

[SFX: Emmett getting the gas pumping and then heading off]

[Pause…]

[SFX: The Listener’s phone ringing]

[Your phone goes off and you pick it up. It’s the dispatch manager]

[D] “Hey, just checking in. How’s your ride with Emmett going?”

[Pause!]

[The manager chuckles]

[D] “Went on about Sleepy Beauty, huh? Heh… Yeah, that man loves his wife… Makes the rest of us look bad, to be honest.”

[Pause]

[At your innocent comment, the manager goes silent for a moment]

[...Pause?]

[D] “I’m still here, copy… Did you say he called her his ‘Cuddle Bug’?”

[Pause]

[D] “...Well… that’s weird… Mildly alarming? No. Just weird, for now.”

[Pause???]

[D] “Why is it weird? Erm… so, Emmett had a stepsister and that was her nickname. I shouldn’t be gossiping, aaaah, why am I so bad at this?! But yeah, nothing too suspicious, really. Just made me start thinking about what happened to her…”

[...]

[D] “...Yeah, finish your ride with Emmett, and let’s drop this. Out.”

[SFX: The call ending]

[...]

[SFX: Emmett heading on back to the ambulance and hopping in]

[E] “Here we are. All set to go?”

[Pause!]

[E] “And you’re sure you don’t have to use the bathroom.”

[Pause.]

[He smiles, still carefree, and gets the vehicle rolling]

[E] “I like you. You’re nice and chill. Could honestly use way more of that on the team, in my opinion. Don’t tell Daryl I said though, please, that man is always up my ass about something.”

[Pause]

[E] “Who called you, by the way? I heard your phone ringing all the way inside the lobby…”

[Pause]

[Emmett rolls his eyes, smile unimpacted]

[E] “Like I said… Daryl’s always up my ass. I’m gonna have to have a chat with him at some point but, for now, how’s about we head back to the hospital? I’m pretty sure they actually got decent pizza this time to celebrate.”

[You give him the thumbs up and he gives one back]

[E] “10-4, good buddy!”

[SFX: The ambulance setting off in a slightly heavy silence]

[Fade Out]

Perspective Change: ‘Cuddle Bug’/’Sleepy Beauty’

[Scene opens at Emmett’s home, in the second Listener’s room]

[SFX: A body being dragged/things falling]

[You’re so close to the window. So close. Each dragging movement seems to take ages]

[SFX: Another drag/more things falling]

[Pause…]

[SFX: The front door opening]

[Your heart nearly stops as you hear the front door open]

[E, faintly] “Sweetie, I’m home!”

[His footsteps plod toward you. You forgot what you were doing…]

[...]

[SFX: The door being unlocked and opening]

[E] “Honnneyyy… Oh. Oh, honey… You fell out of bed again…”

[...]

[You… know this man…?]

[Emmett looks to you, unreadable]

[E] “...Did you remember for a few minutes, honey?”

[P-Pause]

[He sighs and picks you up, resting you back in bed]

[E] “Poor love… You must have been so scared before your medicine kicked in… Shh, it’s OK. I’m home, Cuddle Bug. Let me, hmph, get you back in bed… Training the newbie will be done in a few weeks, and it’ll be right back to normal for us, OK?”

[...]

[E] “Can I have a little kiss, please? I’ll get dinner sorted after, I promise.”

[SFX: A little kiss]

[He smiles gently, so very invested in you and your well-being. How could he be bad?]

[Pause…]

[E] “Aww, honey… You don’t need to apologize for panicking over seeing me. You’re sick. It’s OK… I understand.”

[...]

[E] “...You’re so sweet to me, you know that? Such a good wife… No matter how ill you get, you always keep me in mind.”

[Pause…?]

[He smiles. It’s a little ill. A little]

[E] “Mhm… I’ll go get dinner on now, beautiful, and then I’ll pick up the mess, don’t worry. You just rest for me, alright?”

[Pause <3]

[E, chuckling warmly] “Hmhm, OK honey, love you too.”

[SFX: Him heading off and locking the door behind him, whistling]

[Five minutes. Your memory stays for five minutes before it goes again…]
