Context: You were raised by your older brother, Bill, who turned to crime fairly young to keep the family afloat. Devon, his best friend, has been a fixture just as long. You used to love Devon until he got caught in one of your brother's schemes and went away for seven years. You tried to make it work, but the pain was too much. Now, two years later, Devon is home and your brother is right back to scheming. But everything is not as it seems...
Setting: The Listener's home.

[B] = Bill, your protective older brother
[D] = Devon, your prison-bound ex-boyfriend
[Scene opens at a run-down home]
[SFX: A horn honking/grease popping]
[You stand at the old gas stove, watching breaded chicken patties fry, when you hear your brotherās old car roll up]
[SFX: An old car rolling up/a few honks]
[B, distantly] āWilllllooowwwww, guess whose home!ā
[Pause?!]
[B, annoyed] āYes, me! Buuut I also brought home an old face that you used to try and sneakily smooch!ā
[...]
[Your whole body runs cold and you hurry out to the sagging front porch to see your older brother hopping out of his beaterā¦ followed by a face you havenāt seen in years]
[SFX: Devon climbing out of the car]
[...Pauseā¦]
[B] āYep, your olā prison penpal, Devon! Been a while, hasnāt it? Heheā¦ That heist got you in for seven years! Woof, eh?ā
[...]
[Devon looks away, eyes hard]
[D] ā...Willow.ā
[...Pause.]
[B, laughing] āYeah, bastard just got out! Can you believe it? Look at how much muscle heās put on! Heheā¦ Enh, Iām just kidding, you dumb bastard. Sis, what do we got for grub, huh?ā
[Pauseā¦]
[D] āIā¦ I donāt want to be a burd-ā.
[B] āNonsense! I promised weād put you up after you got out and I meant it! Willow doesnāt mind, do you?ā
[...]
[B] āSee? Cāmon, Iām starving and it smells like meatloaf night is in full effect.ā
[SFX: Them walking inside/the grease popping]
[D] ā...Bill, cāmon, this is clearly hard for-ā.
[B] āOh, shut it. Kick off your boots and have a seat, cāmon. We need to talk shop.ā
[SFX: The kitchen chairs being moved/sat in by big bois]
[...Pause?]
[He looks so ashamed that the anger in your heart ebbs. A little]
[D] ā...Willow, I donāt mind going to the halfway house until I can find work, I donāt want you uncomfortableā¦ā
[...?]
[He picks his head up, tragically hopeful]
[D] āIā¦ I donāt drink anymore. But some tea sounds real nice, thank you.ā
[B] āPfft, donāt let him go soft on you, Sis, cāmon. Get him a whiskey.ā
[Pause.]
[Your brother rolls his eyes but Devon nods his head in appreciation]
[B] āYou two are such babiesā¦ā
[D] āIām a recovering alcoholic, Billā¦ And Iām doing my damned best not to remind Willow of memories best left forgottenā¦ā
[...Pause.]
[Devon nods, offering you a tired, broken smile]
[D] āChamomile sounds lovely, thank you.ā
[You head into the kitchen, the door swinging shut behind you, and start brewing tea as the boys talk in the dining room]
[SFX: Tea being brewed]
[B] āDev, Willowās moved on, right? Donāt be pathetic and whip out the love letters. You arenāt going to hurt my sister by being yourself.ā
[D, stressed] ā...Why are you doing this? Havenāt I paid enough-?ā
[B, sharply] āShhh! You promised!ā
[D, even more distressed] āFor fuckās sake, I got put away because of YOU, and now youāre forcing me to be around Willow! I took the fall and youāre hurting her for it, not me!ā
[B, warning] āDevā¦ Do not start. We had an agreementā¦ā
[...]
[SFX: Fill in [Pause] with cracking grease/the oven being fiddled with]
[D] ā...Iām sorryā¦ I remember the agreement. I do. But, Billā¦ This isnāt right. This isnāt fair, and you know itā¦ Willowās been acting like a stay-at-home wife for years, you havenāt let her finish school, and now you-ā.
[SFX: The kitchen door opening]
[Both of them shut up as you pad out of the kitchen and pour their tea]
[B] āThanks, Sis. Appreciate you.ā
[Pause.]
[Your brother shoots you a warning look but you ignore him, staring instead at Devon]
[B] ā...Youāre going to make Dev blush if you keep staring at him like that.ā
[...Pause]
[D] ā...You kept my room clean all this time? Thanks, sweetheart, thatāsā¦ Thatās right kind of you.ā
[Bill rolls his eyes again]
[B] āYes, yes, very kind. Look, you can catch up with your ex-boyfriend later, kiddo, itās time for us to talk about business.ā
[...?]
[B] āYes, that kind of business. Look, donāt get started, OK? I know. I know you worry. I know you donāt us getting hurt, but we got itā¦ OK?ā
[Pauseā¦]
[B, saccharine] āCāmonā¦ Whoās your favorite big brother?ā
[Pause.]
[B] āThatās right, me. And who always takes care of his little sis?ā
[Pause?]
[B] āMmhm, me! So, you go and worry about that meatloaf and let Dev and I work out the next scheme, mmkay? If youāre good, maybe Iāll let you hold the body bag this time. You wanna try cooking with human?ā
[D, startled] āBill!ā
[Your brother lets out a maniacal laugh]
[B] āKidding, kidding! Right, down to business. Willow, you ring that dinner bell the second itās done, alright? All this talk of murder has me salivating for supperā¦ā
[...]
[You exchange looks with Devon but dutifully return to prepping dinner]
[SFX: Fade out on them chatting - Rec. improv/grease popping]
ā----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Time Lapse - Three hours
ā----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Scene opens back in the house]
[SFX: Dishes being washed/a door opening and closing faintly]
[Bill belches as he throws his plate in the sink and laughs at your annoyed look]
[B] āAw, cāmon! Itās just one more plate!ā
[Pause.]
[He laughs and ruffles your hair]
[B] āFine, fine. Devās outside smoking a cig if you want to go and be all angsty together. If I hear any sobbing, Iām going out with my shotgun, got it?ā
[...]
[He laughs, still a bit manic]
[B] āIām kidding!! Go on, go āreconnectā, or whatever gross shit you two do.ā
[SFX: The Listener stepping outside/cicadas]
[You walk outside and see Devon sitting on the sagging porch
[Pauseā¦]
[He looks at you, startled, cigarette barely dangling off of his lips]
[D] āOh, uhā¦ Willow.ā
[Pause.]
[D] āHuh? What do you mean?ā
[Pauseā¦]
[D] ā...Why did I say that I ātook the fallā earlierā¦? Iā¦ā
[He looks away, eyes haunted]
[...]
[SFX: The porch creaking as the Listener sits by him/the cicadas]
[You sit next to him on the old, worn porch, as the cicadas sing around you. The stars above seem a little less dull as they dance behind the clouds]
[D] ā...Remember, years ago, when we sat on this porch together and talked about the future? Iād talk all about how I was gonna save up enough to get a decent bike, grab you, and weād jet all the way across the States to the West Coastā¦ Iād work on bikes, put you through school, and youādā¦ finally feel safe and appreciatedā¦ā
[...Pauseā¦]
[D] ā...I worried every single day I was behind bars, Willow. I know Bill would throw hands with the Devil himself over you, but that doesnāt mean you werenāt always stuck at home, cooking every meal, cleaning every square inch of this houseā¦ and God knows Bill can be a real bastard.ā
[...]
[He pauses, voice catching]
[D] ā...Why did you stop visiting me in prisonā¦?ā
[...]
[He nods, sad]
[D] āHurt too badā¦ Yeah, thatās what I thoughtā¦ā
[Pauseā¦]
[D] āSweetheart, you visited me five out of seven yearsā¦ Thatās so much pain to swallow, just for my comfortā¦ Heh, you made the boys crazy, you know? Got told a lot that I was lucky I had a woman that pretty and dedicated to me waiting at homeā¦ Made things awkward when I had to tell āem that you werenāt exactly my girl anymore.ā
[...]
[He breathes out as you rest against his side. For the first time since he was arrested, Dev lets himself cry in front of you]
[D] āOh, sweet girl, donāt cuddle up to my side, cāmonā¦ Donāt give me hope.ā
[Pauseā¦?]
[D] āTrust me, I know Iām dodging your questionā¦ I donāt want you to hate your brother.ā
[...]
[Devon exhales once more, so deeply ashamed]
[D] ā...Yes. I took the fall for that heist. Bill was the one that should have gone to prison, not me. Iām so sorry-ā.
[SFX: The door swinging open and a gun cocking]
[You both turn around quickly as the door swings open and what sounds like a shotgun cocks. Bill stares both of you down, smile calm but eyes wild]
[B] āI told you I had one rule for you getting to see Willow, Devonā¦ You know what happens to fucking snitches!ā
[D] āWillow, run-!ā
[SFX: Fade out on another gunshot]
[To be continued?]
