Notes: This script is okay for monetization. Can be used on Patreon, just let me know if you do. If you use it, please give credit. You can change pronouns if preferred but otherwise please don't edit the script. My scripts are meant for adult audiences and all characters are 18 . For clarification on the format of the script, any place that says (Pause) is a place for the Listener's response. Anything in \asterisks and italics** isn't meant to be read aloud, it's there to either hint at the tone or provide context that might help the script make more sense.

Summary: When Listener's car breaks down and their phone dies, they find themself not alone in the near pitch-black of the night. When the mysterious cryptid that they can barely see offers them respite, can they trust their offer?

Word Count:Approximately 1,465 words (Not including any actions or cues left in asterisks and italics)

Writer’s Notes: Basically I thought it would be really fun to try writing a script where the genre depends on your interpretation of it! So try taking it whichever direction you want! Of course, you may have to change some of the phrasing to suit the direction you wanna take it in, and that's totally fine so long as you don't change it too drastically. Have fun and hope you enjoy!

Script Below:

\Trudging along the side of the road, Listener is only accompanied by the sound of cicadas chirping loudly. Their car battery died half an hour prior, and with their phone dead, they resorted to setting off on foot to look for help. A resulting a grass and creaking of tree branches catches their attention.**

“It’s a dark night, human. It would not do you well to wander further into it.”

(Pause)

“The fear in your eyes is understandable but unwarranted. There are a vast number of things that could cut short your fragile life, but tonight, I am not one of them.”

(Pause)

“Still, your eyes are full of fear. I see that my words have failed to reassure you.”

(Pause)

“Your staring has not gone unnoticed, human. It’s far too easy to tell what your thoughts are. Your eyes show too much.”

(Pause)

“Indeed. Human eyes are strange; even when you are in a position where you cannot see, you seem to have a different type of sight. Such weak eyes that cannot see in the dark of a starless sky, and yet they can see their death play out before it’s even taken place. However, my sight of the future is much clearer than yours, and I can assure you that you will not die tonight. Which is why I must again say that you cannot die tonight.”

(Pause)

“Correct, human. I am here to guide you, not to kill you. I am your guard, not your killer. I will only keep you safe from harm.”

(Pause)

“Because I have decided to do so.”

(Pause)

“Do you truly need more reason than that?”

(Pause)

“Curious. Why is that?”

(Pause)

“What I am asking is why you need more reason than my desire to protect you. Is that not enough reason to trust me?”

\Listener says no. Narrator sighs.**

“If you require another reason, then it is because I see something in you. Something akin to a flame, and it is something that I wish to examine further.”

(Pause)

“I know it is dark, but my eyes do not work the same as yours. Look at me, what little you can see of me on this moonless night. Do I appear to be the same as you? Do you think that my eyes should see the same things yours do, regardless of whether it's light or dark?”

(Pause)

“Precisely my point. In fact, it would be impossible to explain what I see in you, and I am only using the term ‘flame’ as it is the closest human concept that can accurately represent what I see.”

(Pause)

“Some humans do, yes, but not all of them. However yours is unique from all the others I’ve seen. It… intrigues me.”

\Narrator chuckles.**

“You look frightened, human. There is no need to be. You are under my protection tonight.”

(Pause)

“Of course. There are many things that you need protecting from. Can you not see them - those distant lights in the darkness? To many of the glowing eyes watching us from the trees, you are but a lifesource to be consumed. They watch you with hunger in their mouths, and a deeply rooted desire in their mind. They would devour you entirely without a second of hesitation. And that is why, dear human, you need protection.”

(Pause)

“Certainly at least thirty of them, likely many more. Can you not see them?”

\Listener says no. Narrator chuckles.**

“Ah, right. Those poor feeble eyes of yours. Truly, it is a pity that you have such restricted sight, especially when human eyes have such lovely colored eyes. Yours are especially fascinating to me. If you’d allow me, I’d like to take a closer look at them once we’ve gone somewhere safer.”

(Pause)

“Well I do not intend to allow you to wander these woods for the rest of the night. As I said, you are under my protection, and I will guide you to the area where I was brought into consciousness. It is an area where no other living being will be able to touch you, as my power will be too concentrated for any other creature to stand against it.”

(Pause)

“It is a comforting idea, yes? To be somewhere that is safe? Even if it is somewhere off a road less traveled, and even if it is covered by the dark of the night, I’m sure that the idea of being safe - of being protected - is one that sounds pleasant to you, correct?”

(Pause)

“I thought as much. Then allow me to guide you there so that you may rest for a while and forget your struggles. Please, reach your hand towards me, towards the sound of my voice.”

(Pause)

“Good. Now I will take your hand in my own. I know you cannot see me well, but please do not be afraid by the feel of my hand. I know it might feel strange, but I promise not to bring harm to you, my dear human.”

(Pause)

“It is an odd sensation to you, I know, and I’m certain that it helps very little that I am so cold, but I promise that that I will not cause you any pain. Please have faith in me. Please trust me, and I will not betray that trust.”

(Pause)

“You say nothing, human. I need you to answer me.”

(Pause)

“Speak.”

(Pause)

“Good. Then stay close to me, and be not afraid. The grass may be tall and tangled, and the tree branches may reach out for you, but you shall find no threats when I am with you.”

\As they begin to walk through the grass, Listener suddenly realizes that Narrator is much taller than and says as much. Narrator chuckles.**

“Yes, I am a great deal taller than you. Are you just realizing this now, this far into our conversation?”

(Pause)

“Even if you can not see me in the darkness, I should think you could still roughly guess the origin of my voice.”

(Pause)

“‘The echo?’ Do you hear an echo of my voice when I speak?”

(Pause)

“Interesting. Does it scare you, my dear human?”

(Pause)

“I see. How… strange.”

\Narrator chuckles.**

“It is nothing. Let us continue. We are growing closer.”

(Pause)

“Indeed. Can you feel it? That pull at the center of your chest? In the soles of your feet?”

(Pause)

“I thought as much. The roots of my home extend far, and they are so very curious. They sense the same flame in you that I do, and they are so curious to know more, as am I.”

(Pause)

“There is no need to feel fear, my dear human. As I promised, no harm will come to you. Let yourself feel that pull, and allow it to guide you. I will be by your side the entire way, and will ward off those that seek to devour you.”

\Listener and Narrator continue to walk for a while.**

“There - You can see the roots beginning bridging up from the ground, yes? We are close, and soon you will be able to rest.”

\Listener and Narrator continue to walk for a while.**

“Yes, that’s it. That tree there, I was created - in part - from the bark and sap and fruit it produces. It is my home, and I am its vessel.”

(Pause)

“Yes, it is me, and I am it. I was created from it, and from the heart of a beast long slain. It is why I can offer you protection in these woods, on this land. As far as its roots extend, I can live.”

(Pause)

“Oh, my dear human, those roots run deeper and farther than you might ever realize. I can travel much farther than even where I found you tonight.”

(Pause)

“Much farther. But that’s not a concern for tonight. Tonight, you have no need to travel anymore. Tonight, you may rest. Under these branches, you are safe, and I will watch out for you.”

(Pause)

“I am happy to. In truth, every second I spend with you, I find myself more interested in you. I wish to learn more about you, dear human. I wish to know everything about you. I wish to know what your heart sounds like when its beat is calm, what the softest noise you can hear is, what your eyes look like in the golden light of the sun. And I wish for you to know me just as well.”

\Narrator sighs.**

“But those are matters that must wait until the morning. For now, rest. The grass is soft and your eyes are growing heavy. Lay down, my dear human, for there is nothing left for you to do. Lay down and sleep, and know that I am here and that you are safe.”

(Pause)

“Yes, good, just like that. Lean against me and close your eyes. You are safe tonight. You are safe with me. I will always keep you safe, my dear human.”

\There’s a few moments of silence before the Narrator laughs softly.**

“You are such a curious human. Our meeting tonight was fate, I have no doubt of it. We were drawn together for a reason, and I only hope that the universe reveals it soon. Until then, I know that I shall always find you, just as you found me tonight. Now all the remains is finding out for what purpose we were drawn together, for it will be the same reason for which we were created. Our destiny lies within each other, no matter what our endings might be.”

“But I am getting ahead of myself, aren’t I? Enjoy your rest, my dear human. For I shall know you soon enough.”

\The audio can end here or with more ambience/breathing noises/etc for a sleep aid.**
