For sixty years, you've worked closely with everyone to make the town a better place, even the Mayor himself. Now, you are at the end of your life, terminally ill. You've decided to throw a 'Passing Party' to say goodbye to everyone, but there might be someone not ready to let you go.

[R] = Mr. Rossi, your oldest friend

[M] = Mayor Michael, a kind stranger

[Scene opens in your bedroom]

[SFX: Crunching Autumn leaves, faint crickets, and even fainter chatter from a crowd]

[You rest in bed while people quietly party outside. The lights strung up in your garden wink playfully, and the moon smiles. Your oldest friend waves from the doorway]

[R] “Well, I guess you were right again, old friend. Having a nice, quiet garden party to say goodbye to everyone was a smart move.”

[Pause]

[R] “Hey, you’ve been the soul of this town for over sixty years! Of course, people are going to miss you when you go… I know I am…”

[Pause!]

[R] “C’mon, you knew this would be a little sad when you got the town together with this idea! You’ve helped the community for decades, now. The whole town knows you, and knowing that you’ve got so little time left… It hurts.”

[Pause]

[R] “Hey, I’m an old man, I’m allowed to be a little sappy… Plus, I’ve got to keep you awake long enough for the Mayor to get here, right?”

[Pause!]

[Your oldest friend smiles mischievously]

[R] “Look, I’ve kept your secret for nearly fifty years. I think, if I spilled it now, it’d make me pretty terrible.”

[Pause…]

[A deeply quiet but commanding voice pierces the room]

[M] “Pardon, Mr. Rossi…”

[R] “Oh fuc-! A-Ahem, ah… Mr. Mayor! Sorry, yes, I’ll get out of your way]

[SFX: Footsteps hurrying out/the door shutting]

[As your old friend leaves, the mysterious Mayor crosses the room and takes a seat next to you]

[M] “I’m on time, for once… It only took me sixty years but…”

[Pause <3]

[He smiles gently]

[M] “You know, everyone seems in relatively good spirits. I can’t say I expected a ‘Passing Party’ to be such a hit, but you do love to prove me wrong.”

[Pause <3]

[He takes your hand in his own, gently squeezing it]

[M] “I know you said you wanted me to speak from the heart once you had passed on… but considering how we met, and how I spent nearly twenty minutes trying to explain to you an iota of information while you shook your head and smiled, I’d rather have a speech prepared.”

[Pause?]

[M] “Aha… Of course, I can read it out to you. Here, one moment.”

[SFX: Paper ruffling]

[He takes out a few sheets of paper stapled together and reads:]

[M] “To the Town of Twilight Meadow, I stand here with you today to celebrate an exceptional person, now gone to the Reaper. As the ocean tides roll in and out, I am reminded of the soul of this town, our Soul, who came here as a teen with their family and never stopped helping it become a better place. Soul started our community center, the arts program, the clean-up the beach initiatives, and so much more. Because of them, we have a food garden that gets talked about worldwide. We are known in Hollywood for being film sites for numerous blockbusters, even The Devil You Know. You cannot talk about Twilight Meadow without talking about its Soul.”

[...Pause <3]

[He smiles, eyes misty]

[M] “...I personally met them almost sixty years ago, shortly after they returned from university. What you all probably don’t know about me, given how I look, is that I’ve been around a good while. I guarantee you all think my name is Michael, and I am ‘at best, thirty-four’. I guarantee you all remember different Mayors these last few centuries as well. Or, history does, as it were. You think this because it is my will. I have never, in my life, allowed someone to know me as I really am…”

[...]

[M] “...Until I met my Soul.”

[Pause <3]

[M] “I hope to be more honest with the good, kind community we have here in the future. For now, I can only tell you this: the Soul of Twilight Meadow will be going nowhere any time soon. They will join me in eternity… but you’ll all forget this the moment I say it, even if someone tries to record it… I hope you all enjoy the festivities.”

[Pause!]

[M] “I did my best… You know me, my love. I’m not the most emotive man…”

[Pause <3]

[He cups your face, moving to sit on the side of the bed alongside you]

[SFX: The bed creaking]

[M] “Here… Let me hold that beautiful face…”

[Pause <3]

[M] “...Thank you for the life you’ve given me, my Soul. And for the many more I hope we will have together.”

[He gives you a sweet, tender kiss before looking into your eyes]

[M] “Are you ready, love?”

[Pause]

[M] “Drank plenty of water?”

[Pause!]

[He chuckles quietly]

[M] “Alright, alright, just making sure… Here, sit up.”

[SFX: The bed creaking]

[M] “There we are… Rossi really did pick a beautiful outfit for you.”

[Pause <3]

[M] “Hmhm… He is a good friend, yes. Still amazed he never blabbed our sordid little secret, aren’t you?”

[Pause <3]

[M] “He did pinkie promise, true… I love you. You know what, don’t you?”

[Pause <3]

[His voice is heavy with regret]

[M] “We were forced to live separately… To pretend we hardly knew one another… So many things missed, so many lies just to…”

[He sighs and smiles again]

[M] “Enough sad talk. Time has moved forward enough that a vampire and a human can love openly… I just hate that it took so long. Regardless… Are you ready?”

[Pause <3]

[M] “Good. Tilt your head to the side for me and try and stay relaxed. It… will hurt, there’s no getting around that, but I will do my best to be gentle.”

[Pause]

[SFX: Cloth shifting/more subtle bed creaks]

[M] “Deep breath…”

[...]

[M] “There we go… I’ll see you soon, my everything.”

[He bites quickly but gently, holding you as he gently drains you of the life that you spent in secret with him. Though it does hurt, you trust him, and everything in his body language indicates the same]

[Pause - Draining (VA’s discretion)]

[M] “Mmh… There you go… Now, rest your eyes, my Soul. Fall asleep and you shall wake just as you were when we met so long ago. The two of us will become just another couple here to the people…”

[...]

[He kisses your forehead with a quiet:]

[M] “I love you… See you soon.”

[Pause <3]

[SFX: Him walking away/outside]

[You faintly hear him begin his speech to the town. The town gathered to celebrate you, all of them pausing as your husband speaks and Death draws closer:]

[M, faintly] “To the Town of Twilight Meadow, I stand here with you today to celebrate an exceptional person…”

[SFX: Fade out on his speech/Autumn ambiance]
