Context: You were with him for nearly eight years. He wore his feelings on his sleeve while you tended to be more guarded, garnering something of an 'Ice Queen' nickname. It all came to a head when his lifestyle got too dangerous, and you broke up. You wish you could get through to him that you do care... you just don't want to watch his own lifestyle kill him. He can't see it but... it might not matter anymore, regardless. Or...?
Setting: A graveyard

[Scene opens in a graveyard]
[SFX: A group of people walking]
[A group of people quietly enters a graveyard, following an old man at the head. He walks with a grimace until he stops before a certain grave]
āHere we areā¦ I want you all to please move up so you can see this grave marker.ā
[SFX: People moving, as needed]
[Pause]
[Once heās satisfied, the old man sighs and begins to speak]
āThe Queen reform program was founded nearly sixty years ago by myself and other people who witnessed or have been victims of gun violence. Youāve all seen the statistics, the information, and so onā¦ but I find that the lesson doesnāt really stick until youāve met someone who was a victim. Soā¦ Iād like you to meet my partner.ā
[The crowd looks around expectantly until the old man points his cane at the grave marker. The mood, if it were alive before, dies]
[Pause]
āThis is themā¦ Buried here. I lost them on this very day fifty-five years ago to a drive-by incident. I wasnāt dealing, I wasnāt involved in a gang, and the crowd I hung with back then could be described as āgangster wannabesā at best. But all it took was one of them blaming a drug deal on me, and I lost the love of my life.ā
[His voice catches but he powers through it]
ā...They took three shots to save my life. Died in the ambulance on the way to the hospitalā¦ While I was holding their hand. Iāve never felt so helpless and scaredā¦ I cannot describe to you the confusion, rage, and absolute despair that washes over a person when the person they love is bleeding out on a sidewalk.ā
[Pause]
[The crowd of mostly surly teens stays silent as the old man rests a gentle hand on your tombstone]
ā...One wrong move. One stupid argument cost me everything, and them their life. This is why I fightā¦ have fought, every day, to try and make this sort of thing less likely to happen. Iāve seen parents burying their children, newlyweds burying their spouses, and much, much worseā¦ It might be a foolās errand, but I donāt do it for the fools, I do it for them.ā
[He gently pats your tombstone]
āYouāre worth it, sweetheartā¦ Always.ā
[Pause?]
āHm? The wedding band I have? Ohā¦ā
[Pause?]
[He lets a soft sigh escape him as he examines the ring]
ā...No, Iā¦ never really found someone who was right for me. Not after I lost them, anywho. But, to be honest, I donāt feel like I missed out. Really, Iāve been married most of my lifeā¦ They just arenātā¦ here with meā¦ā
[Pause]
ā...Please, justā¦ Remember their story. No amount of street cred or āfreedomā or showing off is worth a pain like thisā¦ One wrong move cost this world an amazing person, and cost me the LOVE of my LIFE. Itāsā¦ not worth it.ā
[He takes another breath and exhales]
āThatās pretty much the tourā¦ You can exit the cemetery the same way, and contact Greg if you have any questions. Thank you all so much for your time and, pleaseā¦ stay safe.ā
[SFX: The crowd departing]
[The crowd takes their leave, little by little, though some linger to give their condolences or ask more questions. Fifteen minutes fly by before he is alone once more]
[Pause - VAās discretion]
[He sighs again and slowly sits down, resting his back against the tombstone]
āPhewā¦ Never gets easier, does it, baby?ā
[SFX: The wind blowing gently]
āBeautiful dayā¦ Nice and warm, but not too warmā¦ Just like our ideal walk days, eh? Heheā¦ā
[Pause]
[A sad smile etches across his worn face]
ā...I think Iām ready to come homeā¦ Eighty-three is pretty good, yeah? Besides, the doctor said I had a month or so, at best. I donāt want to be on hospice just to lie in bed and wait. Rather be out hereā¦ With you.ā
[Pause]
[You, or, your spectral self, rests a gentle hand on his frail shoulder as tears spill down his cheeks]
āI can feel your hand thereā¦ On my shoulder, just like you never leftā¦ Is it time?ā
[Pause]
āGoodā¦ Iām ready.ā
[He settles his back against your grave marker. You sit with him]
ā...Did I do enough, babyā¦?ā
[SFX: Gentle whispers/windchimes]
[Pause]
āThank Godā¦ orā¦ whateverā¦ This timeā¦ this time, Iāll do it rightā¦ I will do right by you. O-OK? I know youāre thereā¦ Youāve been with me every step, I know you have! I never would have gotten over the alcohol without you guiding meā¦ Iām sorryā¦ā
[SFX: More gentle whispers]
[You assure him heās done more than enough. That you were never angry. Only glad that he got to see another day, even if you didnāt]
āIf youāre real or ...Even if youāre not realā¦ Can you hold me? Iām scaredā¦ Iāve been ready for this for so long, but now that itās happening, Iā¦ Iām terrifiedā¦ā
[You wrap your arms around him and he exhales in shaky relief]
āThank you, babyā¦ Iām gonna rest nowā¦ Iām so tiredā¦ā
[The moments pass by quietly. The birds chirp as they hunt for their dinner and some unfortunate beetles get picked up. His breathing quiets and quiets until you feel him slip away in your arms]
[Pause - VAās discretion]
[SFX: His last breath, if desired]
[You hold him for a good while, even if no one can see. To any passing by, they might see an old man passed out against a gravestone. To you, howeverā¦]
[SFX: More whispers/chimes]
ā...B-Baby?? Waitā¦ Is it really you?!ā
[You turn and smile at him. He looks just like he did when you had to leave him]
[Pause!]
āBaby!!ā
[He runs and practically throws himself into your arms, laughing and sobbing near incoherently]
āYou waited for me!! All of this timeā¦ I knew you were with me, I just knew it! What better guardian angel could I have, right?ā
[Pause <3]
[He sobs happily against you, kissing your face and holding you as though you were everything]
āMy babyā¦ Gods, you look just as beautiful as the day I lost youā¦ Oh gods, Iām justā¦ Iām so happy-! Together forever now, right?? You promise???ā
[You hold him and gently rub his back as he sobs and mumbles]
[Pauseā¦]
āIām going to do it rightā¦ Heaven, Hell, whatever is out there, I donāt careā¦ I am going to do right by you this time! I love you so much!ā
[This timeā¦ you believe him]
[SFX: More whispers/chimes to fade out on]
[Itās going to be OK]
[The End]
ā----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note: Even though this still has a āhappyā ending, I still hate me for writing it. Me is the worst >:(
