~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[SFX: bell ringing, students file out of the classroom]
[SFX: hurried footsteps, paper rustling]
(fading in) “Excuse me, excuse me– oh, sorry Miss Jessie– h–hey, hey!”
[heavy breathing]
“J–Just– one moment. Let me… catch my breath… phew.”
[clears throat]
“Hey. Long morning, huh?”
[pause]
“R–Really!? One of the students caused a Broken Circle?! W–Was anyone hurt?”
[pause]
“Ah, just as I expected from someone as talented as you! It must have been stressful, keeping the damage at a minimum…”
[pause]
“Y-yes, I uh… I did say that you were talented… I’ve always believed that you were talented…”
“I mean… Highmore School of Magic is hardly a place where average teachers work… s–so I know that all my colleagues are talented, especially you!”
“After all, M–Magic Circles are incredibly complicated… th–they’re the most stable way to cast magic, but without an extremely intricate understanding of runic machinations and magic circle basics, they can be dangerous, and…”
“... I’m rambling… I–I’m sorry.”
[pause]
“What did I come here for? O–Oh, right!”
“I… I know that you have a free period right now… s-so are you free right now, orrr…?”
[pause]
“Well I… I wanted to invite you to have a cup of coffee with me.”
“I–I wanted to talk to you… because we teach the same subject, and there are midterm tests coming up… a-and I want to compare test questions with-with you so that we can learn from each other!”
[pause]
“Really? You’d be happy to?!”
“Great! Um… I’ll–I’ll let you get your things… I’ll be outside!”
[SFX: he walks outside]
“... Oh my god, I did it…! I actually did it! Ha…! Now Miss Carnelian won’t be able to tease me about being a coward!”
“Now I just need to get through this conversation with them a-and–”
[SFX: door opens]
“Ack!”
“Oh, are you ready?”
[pause]
“G–Good! Let’s get going then! There’s a coffee shop just down the street from the academy that has some really good energizing coffee… I figured we could both use some, haha!”
[SFX: footsteps continue throughout this section]
[pause]
“So um, aside from the Broken Magic Circle, did-did anything else happen this morning?”
[pause]
“Your students are already on that?! Wow… that’s amazing! My students are still working on the Deconstruction Theory. There’s a couple students who are having trouble grasping it, so I’m spending a little extra time on it…”
[pause]
“... Oh, um… th–thank you! It’s our duty as teachers to make sure that our students can practice magic safely, so we should all strive to make sure our students succeed!”
[SFX: entry bell dings]
“We’re here! The Golden Afternoon!”
“What do you think? It’s pretty new, but it already has good reviews!”
[pause]
“You think the decor is nice? I–I think so too!”
“Come on, let’s order some coffee and then sit down, okay?”
[pause]
“Yeah, it’s pretty quiet this morning… oh, u–um, hello!”
“Um.. c–could I p–please get the Sparkling Caramel Coffee and the Golden Tiramisu? Thanks… and… what do you want?”
[pause]
“Oooh, that does sound good… alright, I’ll pay!”
[pause]
“No, no! I-I’m the one who invited you here, I should pay!”
[pause]
“Then-then you owe me a favor later…? Oh, but–! I mean, I couldn’t possibly…!”
[pause]
“Ah… fine… I–If you insist…”
“Let’s just… g–go sit down.”
[SFX: the two of you slide into a booth]
“... So, I brought the drafts of my tests here…”
[SFX: bag opens, papers rustling]
“I know our curriculums are slightly different, but… I wanted to hear your opinion.”
[SFX: paper rustling]
“Oh, are those your test papers?”
“Okay… I’ll take a look.”
[SFX: long pause, fill in with coffee shop sounds.]
“Oh, I think they just called my name!”
“I’ll be right back okay?”
[SFX: rustling]
[SFX: pen writing, paper rustling]
[SFX: footsteps, cups clinking]
“Here you are! Here’s your coffee, your sandwich… and these are mine…”
“Oh…! You already made some notes on my test! Thanks!”
[he sips his coffee]
“Mmm… ah, that’s some good coffee. I feel more energized already! What do you think?”
[pause]
“You like it too? I–I’m glad I chose a good place then!”
“N–Now back to the tests… um…”
[SFX: rustling papers]
“Here. I see that you plan on testing their knowledge on basic magic circles, but I personally believe that you made this question a little too open-ended for what you were intending. The question here says: ‘Draw a basic Magic Circle to cast Fire’, but you forgot to specify what kind of fire.”
“You could mean red fire, blue fire, Volcanic Fire, Campfire fire, Cold fire… while it’s true that most students will interpret it to mean the basic Red Fire spell, overachievers might get confused because the terminology for most fire circles is so specific…”
[pause]
“... Why are you looking at me like that?”
[pause]
“Y–You’re realizing that despite my skittishness, I’m a good teacher?”
“Oh, um… I– thank you…”
“T–To be honest, I… I just really wanted to be a teacher.”
“I’m usually pretty bad at talking to people… but… when I look at my class, and I remember why I’m here… to teach the next generation and spur them towards greatness… all my worries melt away and I can just… concentrate on my students.”
[pause]
“Yeah… the moment I step out of the classroom, I get all nervous again… that’s why I don’t talk to my colleagues very often. I just… I don’t really know what to say.”
[pause]
“Huh…? What do you mean?”
[pause]
“Y–You thought I hated you?! No! N–Not at all! Why did you get that impression?!”
[pause]
“... Because I always seem to run out of the room the moment you enter?”
“O–Oh… I guess it makes sense how you would come to think that… b–but I promise that I don’t hate you!”
“Quite the opposite, in fact…”
[pause]
“Huh? What did I say?”
[pause]
“What?! I– I said that?! I– I mean– I don’t mean that I– I mean I do, but–!”
[he groans and covers his face]
“... I… just don’t want to make a fool out of myself in front of you…”
[pause]
“It’s because… I… I…”
[long pause]
“... When I first saw you… I was delivering some files to you that you had missed that morning. You were in the middle of a lecture with your students.”
“The way you addressed their questions… the way you spoke so confidently…”
“... I fell in love with you then.”
[pause]
“Yes… and I… I’ve always wanted to talk to you… about… anything, really.”
“But whenever I saw you… I would freeze up… my heart would beat so rapidly… and I couldn’t think straight…”
“So I just… ran.”
“... Eventually… M–Miss Carnelian started to tease me about not having the guts to talk to you… and when she said that someone else might take you away, I–”
[pause]
“... I decided that if I didn’t make a move now… I would regret it for the rest of my life.”
“So um… I wasn’t planning on doing this, but…”
[magic tone]
[magical woosh]
[twinkling, birds chirping]
“... I… made this magic circle for you.”
“I’m sure you know how customizable magic circles are… in my home city… m–making someone a magic circle just for them is considered… a–a proclamation of love.”
“It’s a simple effect spell… but… I filled it with lots of things that reminded me about you.”
“... Do you… like it?”
[pause]
“... You think it’s beautiful?”
[sigh of relief]
“Oh thank god…”
[pause]
“I… you don’t have to give me your answer right now. I mean… I invited you here so we could look over our tests, after all…”
“So… i–if it’s okay with you… I’d… like to ask you out on a date.”
[pause]
“Y–you’d be happy to?! Really?!”
[pause]
“Ah… I–I’m so happy!”
“I… I look forward to it!”
[pause]
“Yeah… let’s… let’s finish our coffee and talk more about our drafts… and then we can talk about our date.”
[papers rustling]
“Oh, you made some notes too! Thanks!”
“A–And… um…”
[pause]
“... I… in the future… I’ll make you an even more beautiful magic circle… one that I think… truly represents you.”
[pause]
“Yeah… I hope… I hope that you’ll love it as much as I love you.”
