Part 1 Part 2

Context: They say a powerful vampire lord grew bitter and retreated from his own kind. He built a castle in the forest's heart and tried to be content with his own company. Alas, he found himself lonely. He'd spent much of his time cultivating a garden and the rose bushes were in blood. He plucked one and wished for one thing. "I wish to meet the love of my life, please". He thought it was just a silly fancy but, right before his eyes, the rose turned into a beautiful woman. She smiled at him and simply said "Where did you bury them?". Their love became one of legends, a good way to scold lazy husbands who forget to show their love. Of course, it's just a silly story. After all, even the most beautiful roses wilt. Hm? Oh, I didn't mean anything by that at all. Not at all.

[R] = Rin, Seth's nephew

[Scene opens in the same room, yet another night of being locked away]

[SFX: Faint kitchen sounds]

[You lie in bed, struggling quietly against the bonds holding you in place. You hear faint sounds in the kitchen and pause]

[R, faintly] “Poor Uncle… Months and months and her behavior has only grown more hostile… I can see his heart break every single time that she curses him… And now he’s out on his own, interrogating the town folk for answers, again and again… At least there was leftover steak for a midnight snack.”

[...]

[He’s alone]

[...]

[K I L L T H E B O Y]

[SFX: Vines snaking around metal chains and snapping them]

[Vines bloom from your arms and legs, jagged but strong enough to snap the metal in twain]

[SFX: The metal being cast aside and vengeful footsteps racing toward Rin]

[You cast your shackles aside, practically frothing at the mouth to get your target. You’re up, flying, so fast that you’re in front of him in seconds]

[Pause…]

[The boy turns from his cooking and pales]

[R] “Auntie, you’re up! And… in… bloom? I-I, ah… I didn’t realize you could sprout vines with such sharp thorns…”

[Pause.]

[The boy glances about nervously, hand grasping for a nearby frying pan]

[R] “N-Now, Auntie, let’s… let’s talk about this! You don’t want to hurt me over cooking a bit of rare steak past midnight, right?”

[...]

[R, laughing nervously] “I-I’d have offered to share but I, ah, if I recall, you only drink water, so nearly raw meat didn’t- WHOA!”

[SFX: A vine shattering several plates]

[You whip a vine out and it slices neatly through many expensive-looking plates. The boy dodges but only just]

[R] “W-Wait…”

[Pause…?]

[He gawps at you, backing away each time you move toward him]

[R] “W-Where… is Uncle Seth? I-I… I won’t tell you!”

[SFX: Another vine whip and Rin hitting the wall]

[Pause!]

[R] “GAH! A-Ah… M-My arm… Nngh… C’mon, Rin, you can fight! B-But… I don’t want to…”

[Pause!!!]

[The young man gawps at you, horrified]

[R] “A-Aunt Rose, please… I-I don’t want to hurt you! I-I don’t!”

[SFX: Vines whipping]

[The thorned vines slam him against the wall as he lets out a weak wheeze]

[Pause.]

[R] “Hhh! N-No! I-I won’t tell you w-where my Uncle is! He’s trying to help you, why can’t you see that?! WE are trying to help you!”

[SFX: Another slam]

[You slam him into the stone again, hard enough that the castle wall shakes loose with dust]

[R] “Gahh! P-Please… Please, we love… we love you… P-Please…”

[SFX: Hurried footsteps]

[You hear his voice call out behind you and, like a trained beast, you turn toward it and let Rin slide to the ground with a weak groan]

[S] “Love, it’s me you want! C’mon! Come after me!”

[He pauses, gulping, eyes wide]

[S] “Rin, please tell me you’re alright…”

[Rin lets out another miserable groan]

[R] “R-Run, Uncle… Please… S-She’s so strong… nngh! A-Arm’s broken…”

[You turn on your target, teeth bared and vines whipping angrily around you. He looks upon you, heartbroken]

[S] “...Rose… Don’t you remember when Rin first came to us?”

[SFX: A violent vine whip]

[Seth takes a step back, wincing as you slash him with a vine]

[S] “Nngh…! He was just a little boy… R-Remember…? He showed up on our doorstep when he was but eight… Half-starved, shaking, and sick…?”

[....]

[SFX: Another violent vine whip]

[R] “U-Uncle, run! She can’t be reasoned with! G-Gah, this frying pan is so heavy, why is it so heavy?!”

[Seth grunts a bit, staggering back… but he doesn’t retaliate]

[S, sadly] “...Twas you that opened the door that night… You looked at him and didn’t even say a word. You embraced him and the poor boy just sobbed and sobbed… Do you remember?”

[P-Pause…]

[SFX: The Listener taking a few steps back]

[S] “...It’s OK… It’s OK, my Rose… I’m not mad… and, I’m sure once Rin has a nice, hefty dose of painkillers, he’ll not be mad either… Just please step away from the fireplace, alright?”

[P-Pause!]

[He takes a step forward. You take one back]

[S] “Darling… Please. Even if you send yourself to the flame, it won’t cure you! It won’t stop whatever malicious bastard is doing this to you to stop wanting to cause us harm, and even if you don’t remember us, I know you can still feel us! Feel that we were once part of your life before you forgot! You know that… because, if you didn’t, you know harming us wouldn’t cause you such distress… Don’t you?”

[You’re chilled to the core by how well this man knows you.]

[P-Pause…]

[SFX: Another exchange of steps]

[S, pleading] “Rose, please… I spent a year searching for you, desperate for even a hint that you still lived… I swear to you, I will do ANYTHING to save you from the cruel fate chosen for you! I just need you to trust me… Just for a moment…”

[...]

[SFX: And yet another exchange of steps]

[S, desperate] “Darling-!”

[SFX: The fire crackling loudly behind you]

[R, with a pained grunt] “Sorry, Auntie!”

[The boy manages to tackle you around the waist and knock you to the ground. Despite how you struggle, he manages to tie you in your own vines]

[SFX: The tackle and vines struggling]

[S] “Good lad, Rin! Keep both yourselves from the flame!”

[Pause!]

[He hurries over, dragging you and the boy both from the flame]

[R] “Ohh, this is going to sting worse than when Gulag the Foul broke that arm… Shh, Auntie, please don’t cry… I know this… This isn’t you, no matter how many times whatever is controlling you tries to say!”

[P-Pause!]

[Seth pauses, holding you close]

[S] “He… wants to find his child…? And his… wife?”

[Pain shoots through you once more and you grasp him angrily by the lapels]

[PAUSE?!]

[Seth looks at you, horrified]

[S] “W-Where did… ‘I’ bury them??? Gods above, I’ve never struck a woman, much less buried one! And a child?!”

[As soon as it came on, the anger fades, and you collapse against him]

[...]

[S] “Rose! Shh, no, no… I have you… I have you…”

[...]

[S] “...Oh, my poor love… O-Oh, I…”

[He squeezes you close, shoulders shaking]

[S] “...whatever accursed creature possessing you… I hope you gain the accursed spine to come and face me yourself, you murderous cur… DO YOU HEAR ME?!”

[A cold, callous giggle echoes from inside you before you slip back into sleep. None of it is yours]
