[Ambient noise throughout script: Wind whooshing, sea crashing against the rocks, seagulls]
[SFX: a click followed by the low humming of a big lightbulb]
“Alright… after so many years, this lonely lighthouse is finally up and running again.”
“The lightbulb is in good condition… and so are the controls. I’m… kinda surprised actually.”
“... If only my uncle could see this… he’d always talk about this place with pride.”
“... He was never the same after that night.”
[they sigh]
“Come on, talking to myself already? I’ve been here for less than a day. I’m gonna be here for a few months at least…”
[long pause, SFX: wind howls]
“... And yet, it seems like it’ll rarely be silent here.”
[SFX: footfalls on metal]
[SFX: rusty door opens, wind volume increases]
“... The ocean… hopefully, with this place working again… there will be no more lives lost on those rocks.”
“Let’s just get through the month… then I can head back home for a while.”
[SFX: wind whooshing]
“Brrr… it’s cold out here… I guess the sun did just set.”
“I’d better get inside before I freeze to death… make dinner and all that.”
[SFX: metal door opens and closes]
“Right… where did I put my lantern… ah, here.”
[SFX: picks up lantern, walking down metal stairs]
[SFX: gentle breeze]
“Ah… this place is giving me chills…”
“... I already feel like I’m being watched… come on, get it together! There’s no one else but me in this place.”
[SFX: door open]
[pause]
“... Oh.”
[SFX: door closes]
“... Haha… wow, seeing things already? I thought I was stronger than this. Okay, deep breaths, just a hallucination. You most definitely did NOT just see a ghost in the kitchen, you’re FINE–”
[SFX: woosh back]
“GAH!”
[SFX: lantern falls on metal]
“Ah– my lantern–!”
[heavy breathing]
“Um… p–please don’t hurt me… I– I’m probably intruding on uh– your home or something, because this place has been abandoned for decades, but um– I’m just here to do my job!”
“I… please don’t… possess or haunt me or anything…”
[pause]
“H–Huh?”
[pause]
“You… you’re sorry? F–for what?”
[pause]
“Scaring me?”
“Um… you… you won’t hurt me?”
[pause]
“Oh right! My lantern!”
[SFX: pick up the lantern]
“Phew… it’s not damaged.”
[pause]
“I–I know there are tons of spare lanterns in the warehouse, but… this was my uncle’s. It’s precious to me.”
“S–So… who are you? You’re… a ghost, right?”
[pause]
(strained) “Oh… you’re… the sailor who died on the rocks here…”
[long pause]
“I just… Well…”
“... M–My uncle was the one working here… when that incident happened…”
“And I… I came back here… to fill the role.”
[pause]
“... You want to know why?”
“Um… my family… w–we’ve been living by the ocean for generations. In fact, my parents were some of the people who built this particular lighthouse.”
“I’m just fulfilling their legacy.”
[pause]
“You… think that’s nice?”
“... Thank you.”
“But you… you died because the lighthouse was being repaired that night, right? D–Don’t you resent my uncle or something?”
[pause]
“... Not at all?”
“... Why?”
[pause]
“... You know that it wasn't his fault?"
“Th… Thank you.”
“So… why are you here? Or… wh–why did you appear to me?”
[pause]
“You… were lonely?”
“Oh… I–I guess that makes sense. It’s been decades since this place has been abandoned, after all.”
“... Have you been… all alone on this rock, this whole time?”
[pause]
“Really…? Not even other ghosts?”
[pause]
“They all moved on a long time ago, huh…”
[pause]
“No! I–I’m okay with you being around! After all, this was technically your home first! If anything, I’m the one intruding!”
“I… I wouldn’t mind the company in this lonely place after all.”
[pause]
“Yeah, I mean… the solitude was definitely part of the reason.”
“Far away from the hustle and bustle of civilization… the sound of the sea and wind to keep you company…”
“... It’s nice, in a way.”
[pause]
“That’s why you became a sailor too?”
“I see. I guess we have that in common, then.”
[pause]
“Hm? Dinner?”
“Yeah, I… I am kinda hungry.”
[pause]
“Eh? You made some food for me?! Can… Can ghosts do that?”
[pause]
“You’ve had lots of practice over the decades?”
“Ha… haha! I see!”
“But… why?”
[pause]
“You… just felt like helping out?”
“Wow… thank you!”
“I’ve never had food made by a ghost before… what did you make?”
[SFX: door opens]
“Oh, the fish I caught on the trip here!”
“Thanks! I was wondering how I was going to cook that.”
[deep breath]
“It smells really good… but I hope you didn’t use too many ingredients, haha!”
[pause]
“I figured you knew how to conserve food, given that you used to be a sailor and all…”
“Um… c-could I ask you something?”
[pause]
“Well… I’d like to hear about your time as a sailor…”
“I– I might have lived by the sea my whole life, but I’ve never explored the open waters… c–can you tell me about it?”
[pause]
“You can tell me while I have dinner?”
“Th–Thank you!”
“I’d love to hear about it… and taste your cooking.”
[SFX: chair pulling out and sitting down]
“And um… thank you for deciding to talk to me. I really mean it… it’s good to have your company.”
