[Scene opens before a dark forest]

[SFX: The Listener casually striding through said forest/nighttime forest ambiance]

[You’ve decided it’s a nice night for a stroll in the woods. The air is crisp and cool, and you have all night to find something to get into]

[Pause]

[SFX: Another set of footsteps, following behind]

[You stop and the second set of steps that have joined you stop as well]

“My sincerest pardons, friend. I did not mean to bother you on your stroll.”

[Pause]

[You answer politely but don’t look at it]

“Might I walk behind you in good faith? If you are unafraid of such company, of course. Some find it most bothersome.”

[Pause]

“You are too kind, my friend. Truly, I appreciate it.”

[SFX: Both continuing to walk the forest]

[You walk in silence for a bit. The wind has begun to grow and howl. Eyes watch you from the forest and you occasionally have to pat down a hair or two on the back of your neck]

“Walking alone in the woods can be very liberating… I quite like it, though it seems people often aren’t keen on my company…”

[Pause?]

“Well… You won’t even look at me, for one.”

[Pause]

“...You think I am playing a game, of some sort? That is quite the accusation, my friend. Why would you assume such a cruel thing of me?”

[Pause]

[His steps stop briefly but you continue]

“No… You are playing a game… and you know of exactly which sort?”

[Pause~]

“...You are just curious if I am playing or not…? If I am even aware of the game…?”

[~Pause~]

[The man… the Entity, rather, begins to walk once more]

“...How can I play a game when you will not acknowledge me? Will you not even turn to look at me? Almost all games must be played with some sort of acknowledgment of the other player, no? Otherwise, you are simply playing alone… Which you seem to be under the impression that you are not.”

[Pause]

[At your refusal, you hear it hiss under his breath]

“Then will you heed the serpents before you? They are quite vicious!”

[SFX: A nest of angry serpents]

[You almost walk into a nest of angry, especially large serpents that seem to spring out of nowhere]

[Pause <3]

[SFX: A pop of magic power/cawing crows]

[You wave your parasol and the serpents erupt into a flock of crows that happily escape into the night]

“...You turned my serpents to crows… Are you a witch, then?”

[SFX: The Listener continuing to walk]

“Hey! Confound you, you cannot begin a game and then walk away! This isn’t how you play with ME! NOT ME!”

[SFX: Howling wolves]

[Pause]

[SFX: A pop / yipping puppies]

“You turn my wolves into domestic pups?! And send them to run and play like fools! Fine, if wolves and serpents are not to your taste, then how do you feel about the cold, nightmarish indifference of insects?!”

[SFX: A swarm of insects]

“No human enjoys the company of the swarm!”

[SFX: A pop / fluttering wings]

[Again, you turn the biting pests into moths that happily go about their business. This seems to make the Entity snap]

“...You… Cheeky little creature! Do you think you can grin and dance and make a mockery when you are in MY HOME?! YOU HAVE NO CONCEPT OF WHAT I AM! NONE LIKE YOU DO, SO FACE ME!”

[SFX: A rumbling]

[At last, you turn to look at it. The Entity is tall, twisted… uncertain. Unable to pick a form. It roars and screams and rages and lurks]

[Pause]

“And NOW you look upon me, the lord of this forest! You disrespectful little… Do you have no heed for your own life?! Do you not know the rules?!”

[~Pause~]

“Those that wander alone at night… Tend not to care much for their own lives, my friend. Your ability to look upon me without fleeing is admirable… but it will not save you. The moment you tip your hand-”.

[SFX: The Listener walking away]

“Hey!”

[It Follows, still so unstable in his form that he seems everywhere]

“Do not walk away from me! Confound you, pay attention to me! Acknowledge me!”

[SFX: The Entity following]

“...Your magic cannot protect you against everything, witch… The moment you drop your guard..”

[You ignore it]

[SFX: More trudging/walking]

[Pause]

“...Fine… Fine! I do not need you to notice me to maintain my power, you festering little sore…”

[Pause <3]

“...Acknowledge me.”

[Pause]

“...Why won’t you talk to me, now? Why do you pretend to be so fascinated by the damned fireflies instead of the monster walking in your shadow?! You should be terrified! You should be running for whatever life you have left!”

[Pause]

[The Entity drops to its knees behind you, pleading]

“Please… I beg you! A simple touch! A look! Please, I will do anything if you just pat me on the head!”

[You smile]

[Pause?]

[It hesitates, shifting into monstrosity after monstrosity]

“...Will I reveal my True name… if you pat me on the head?”

[Pause]

[SFX: Its voice distorting slightly in defeat, multiplying]

“... My true name in your tongue… is ‘Fear’.”

[Pause]

[You pat it on the head and it eases, clinging to your waist]

“...Thank you… Oh gods, the relief…”

[You stroke its crown as it gradually begins to shift into something more human. A gaunt figure with eyes ringed in fatigue]

“...May I be your lover?”

[Pause?]

“Why? … No one has ever tolerated my company for more than a bit of good fun. A thrill. You were never afraid… I’ve never even thought of… having someone that could stand my company. I may not seem it, but… I am powerful. I could provide anything you desired. Riches, gems, power… Anything!”

[Pause]

[It smiles. You think]

“Thank you! I am grateful to you, Master… I swear my loyalty and obsession to you, as long as you will stand by my side.”

[You pat his head and he goes near limp]

“...If you wish me to lie here and let you pat my head, then very well. Whatever pleases you. I am yours, for however you wish to have me or use me…”

[You reward it for a bit by patting its head. The trust it seems to have in you is almost… cute. Today was a positive one, you feel.]

[Pause]

“Mmh. Whatever pleases you…But, I have a question…”

[Pause?]

“...What do I call you…?”

[You ponder this for a moment and answer it plainly]

“God…? A-As you wish… Anything you wish…”
