[X] “Snowflake, PLEASE-! Please just pick up the phone, just for a little bit! Look, you have every right to hate me, I was wrong! I should have listened to you when you tried to tell me that Barry was putting me on, just please-!

[SFX: More packing]

[Pause]

[SFX: A phone buzzing for a bit… a beep]

[X] “Please! I’m just asking for five minutes to know you’re OK! My family keeps asking about you, too, they’re scared sick… The ones that still talk to me after learning what happened… I don’t care, OK?! I don’t care if they hate me, I deserve it, I take full responsibility, just please-!

[X] “Snowflake… Please. You didn’t let me see you in the hospital, you haven’t let me come over to your house, you won’t talk to me on the phone or over instant messenger… Please, just… If we’re over, I understand, but not knowing what’s going on is killing me! I just want to know… you’re OK and that there may be a chance-

[Pause.]

[SFX: A knock on the door]

[You muffle your frustration and go to answer the door. The officer from before stands, waiting patiently]

[Pause!]

[O, with a small smile] “Aye, sorry to bother you once more. I just wanted to check in now that you’re out of the hospital, see how you were doing, and discuss the next steps in the case. May I come in for a bit?”

[Pause]

[You stand aside and he enters, glancing about]

[O] “Ah… Moving out, eh? That or you’re getting ready to have one Hell of a garage sale.”

[Pause…]

[O] “No, I can’t say I blame you… However it’s been phrased, and however it will be phrased to you by that man’s lawyer, you nearly lost your life to his actions, and even if said man wasn’t your direct partner, said partner still didn’t help. I’m, ah… I’m just sorry you’re going through all of this.”

[Pause]

[O] “Oh? Haha, nothing to drink for me, thanks. Sorry, I can’t help you clear the fridge. But, ah, at this point and time, the young man has confessed to his part in the crime, as have two of the other five that were there. Tried to deny it at first until we got subpoenas on their phones and saw the idiots had recorded it. Damned fools record everything and then act surprised when they get in trouble for it these days, I swear.”

[Pause?]

[He laughs, running a hand through his hair]

[O] “OK, OK, you caught me… Don’t tell anyone, but I’m *old*. Got a six-year-old son at home who tells me I’m a Boomer all the time, hehe.”

[Pause <3]

[O] “Hmhm, yeah. His name is Connor. Says my ‘rizz is abysmal’, whatever that means. Please tell me it’s nothing too bad. My pride can’t handle many more of these scathing, six-year-old commentaries on my person.”

[Pause]

[O] “Oof… You know it’s bad when your own son thinks your flirt game is bad, heh. Ah well, I have more than enough on my plate without worrying about dating. I’m Detective Oleander, after all, not Dating Oleander. You can call me Paul, though, if it makes you more comfortable throughout this.”

[Pause…]

[O, sympathetic] “...You’re going through a lot. Nearly dying, hospitalization, I’m guessing a break-up with a long-time partner… Honestly, you’re tough as nails for managing to hold yourself up so well. I just wish I could say it gets easier from here…”

[Pause…]

[O] “I’d honestly just recommend to lawyer up, and lawyer up well. They might be slimy lampreys in fancy suits, but they can be real lifesavers. Especially against the sort of people that Mr. Barry is…”

[...]

[Paul glances over at your phone as it sounds off with a wince]

[O] “...And if you want a restraining order against your ex…”

[...]

[O] “...We can do a wellness check if you are legitimately concerned he might harm himself. He’s been down at the precinct a few times, pleading for information, but we haven’t exactly been able to help him beyond questioning and what we can allow to be known publicly. I’m not going to say that he looked to be in great health, but I don’t think he’s a serious risk to himself or anyone else.”

[...]

[O, gentle] “If I may… You don’t owe him anything. I know I’m a cop, not a relationship doctor, but I’ve seen guys stuck in that weird ‘bros before… you know’ mentality. It’s almost cult-like in weird ways, but, again, cop. Not a therapist… However we can help, we certainly will, is what I’m saying… but I honestly would advise on focusing on yourself. Getting to a safer place, building a support network, all of that.”

[Pause <3]

[O] “Ah, it’s no trouble. Honest. I just wanted to make sure you were up to date and I was in the neighborhood. Two birds, one stone.”

[...]

[O] “...Aye, if your ex comes back down to the precinct asking questions, I’ll see if we can’t let him know that you say you’re doing fine and to, politely, fuck off and give you space. But, ah, in police speak, hehe.”

[Pause]

[O] “Oh, no trouble. Here, you take my card and give me a call if you need anything, alright? I can’t guarantee I’ll always be available, but I’ll do my best, OK?”

[Pause!]

“You have a good night, alright?”

[Pause!]

[You see him out, waving and closing the door behind him]

[SFX: The door opening and closing]

[X, sobbing] “Please… Please, just talk to me, just one word… I love you so much, and I know it doesn’t seem like it, b-but now I don’t even know who I am without you! I’m scared… I’m scared and it hurts, like stabbing pains, over and over, PLEASE! Just talk to me, just for a moment! I know you’ll never love me again but-!”

[Pause…]
