Part 1

Context: Hundreds of years ago, you were the first prisoner here. Prisoner 001. You were there when they began experimenting on prisoners deep in the recesses of space. When an outbreak shook the massive space prison, and humans began to be forcefully assimilated as 'Joined'. You weren't going to 'join', no matter how many waves of your former prisoners and slavers came at you, foaming at the mouth with infection and rage. It'd take years but they'd soon learn that still flesh was not the thing that taught them fear. It was you.

[Scene opens aboard a desolate prison ship]

[SFX: A droning hum from the ship]

[You stare up at ‘Father’ and he stares down at you, wringing his hands nervously. His many voices conflict briefly before correcting]

[F] “One…You came out of your cell…”

[...Pause.]

[F] “I’ve missed you… I’ve missed you so terribly, One!”

[SFX: Tentacles shifting]

[He pulls you into him and holds you, a collection of humanoid arms and tentacles]

[...]

[F] “Please, let me hold you, just for a moment...Did… Did you need me to… to ‘attend’ to you? I-I will! I just…”

[Pause.]

[He perks, staring down at you. You think]

[F] “...You wish to meet our Children?”

[Pause.]

[He hesitates for a moment]

[F] “...If you attack them… I will defend them. I love you, with all of me. WE love you, but the Children are innocent. They may not be human, but they are ours, and they love you, and-!”

[Pause.]

[He tenses but obeys]

[F] “Shutting up.”

[...Pause]

[F] “You… have watched them grow from the cameras in your cell? You have… watched me evolve…?”

[Pause]

[F] “...a-and you’ve seen nothing that would suggest we are hostile any longer…”

[He makes a noise that almost sounds like a whimper. If twenty people whimpered simultaneously, perhaps]

[Pause?]

[F] “...Forgive my weeping, I-I… I have the Children to fill my time, but they can never fill the void that is left any time we are apart. Please, I won’t force you to join in my unity, I swear it! Please… Please just come and be with your family…”

[He grunts as you grab him and yank him down so you’re eye to eye]

[F] “Oh!”

[Pause…?]

[F] “Why… Why was I so desperate to force you to meld with us during the initial infection…?”

[He ponders this for a moment, intensely alien and yet so human]

[Pause]

[F] “...Love. Wrong… love, but love. I felt incomplete without you. I STILL do, even though it has been hundreds of years. I do not know anything about what I am now, One. No scientists or soldiers have dared come here since the initial incident. All I know is that I hurt… and seeing you, no matter how much you loathe me, makes that pain lesser. Others have presented themselves, but it’s never felt right. Nothing is ever right without you!”

[...]

[The earnestness of his answer takes you aback and you release him]

[F] “Ah-! Oh… Apologies. I forget so often how strong you are. Yanking me down to face you and then letting me go, ah… I fear I’m a bit dizzy.”

[Pause…]

[F] “...May… I ask a question, now…?”

[Pause?]

[He wrings some of his hands, almost cute in his nervousness]

[F] “If… you hate me… why did you allow me to, ah… make love to you?”

[...]

[F] “I see… Well, whatever your reasoning, I am just… so glad to hear your voice once more.”

[Pause…?]

[F] “The Children? How they came to be, ah… Truth be told, I am not sure. After our night together, I returned to my part of Home. Next, I knew, there were three little tots curled up in my arms. And then more the next time, and, well, you get the idea… I don’t think I’m laying eggs or anything but it always happens when I lie down to sleep.”

[Pause…]

[F] “Names…? I, ah… Refer to them by numbers. Like you.”

[...]

[His many voices overlap, confused, but desperate to remain gentle]

[F] “...I assure you, I have only ever told them positive things about you, though I have had to be honest about the probability you might attack them…”

[...]

[F] “...I know… There are things in your mind that make you react before you can think. A desperation to survive. To stay individual. I understand… I respect this, but the Children need to know that this does not exclude them, necessarily…”

[...]

[He looks at you in shock]

[F] “You… apologize?”

[Pause.]

[F] “No, no, I am not pressing my luck… I am just surprised. I am thankful for your apology, my love, truly.”

[...]

[F] “O-Of course, I still call you my love… Even though I know you are not mine, really… I have loved you for centuries, now. You are the only person I’ve ever felt this way about.”

[...]

[He shifts, looking down]

[F] “D-Do you… ah… still… hate me…?”

[...]

[F] “...You do not know? Ah… Aha… That is something. More than I expected!”

[Pause.]

[F] “...You want to meet our children…? Ah… Do you promise you will do them no harm? Physical or other?”

[Pause.]

[He nods, looking away]

[F] “Thank you. Very well… If we walk normally, it will take us several hours to walk from your cell to the gardens, where we live. I could get us there much faster if you would allow me to carry you. I am still merged with the A.I of the ship as well.”

[...]

[You take a breath and spread your arms, looking at him expectantly]

[F, smiling] “Thank you for trusting in me, One, and spreading your arms so I may carry you. Here…”

[SFX: Tentacles shifting]

[You hold in a shudder as his tentacles wrap around you and lift you into his arms]

[F] “Here we are… Comfortable?”

[Pause.]

[He laughs quietly]

[F] “Fair enough. ARTEMIS, warp to the gardens from Cell 001, please, party of two-hundred and twenty-two.”

[SFX: A brief hum and a warp noise - fade into artificial birds chirping and water flowing]

[Pause!]

[Light flashes around you for half of a second before the familiar, droning hum of the pipes outside of your cell becomes the chirping of birds you know aren’t real. Your eyes open, adjusting from the bright flash, and you find yourself surrounded by surreal beauty]

[F] “Careful, love… The warp can leave you a little woozy. I hope you like what we have created here… The plant life has mutated in many beautiful ways. It produces sweet fruits and hardy vegetables, and the Children love trying new ways to cook them. Ah, speaking of…”

[SFX: Hurried footsteps]

[You see three of the strange little children rush over to you, wide-eyed and marveling]

[C2] “Mother is here!”

[C3] “Father brought her home!”

[F, patient] “Easy… Calm, now. Let us not overwhelm her. Here, One, let me set you down.”

[He sets you down, holding you steady]

[...Pause?]

[F] “Ah, yes. This is Two, Three, and Four. You can tell them apart by how many dots they have on their foreheads.”

[...Pause]

[They gather around you, marveling, as you crouch down to meet them]

[C4] “You’re so strong looking!”

[C2] “And pretty!”

[C3] “Your scars look like the stars outside!”

[Pause]

[You kneel fully and are quickly overwhelmed by the horde you apparently helped spawn]

[...]

[C2] “Hugs for Mother!”

[C4] “We love the Mother!”

[F] “Children, please! Give her some space…”

[SFX: Tentacles gently guiding away the Children]

[C3] “Aww…”

[C4] “But what if she leaves again?”

[...]

[You exchange looks with ‘Father’ and he gives a sad smile]

[F] “She is her own person, my children. If she leaves, we cannot stop her. Let us just enjoy our time and be on our best behavior, hm?”

[The Children look downcast. Alien though they are, something in you is drawn to protecting them]

[Pause]

[F] “If you would like, One, we’ve kept the gardens here as best we can. I recall you enjoyed the gardens almost as much as you enjoyed beating up anyone that gave you trouble.”

[C4, laughing] “Like the Father!”

[F, laughing too] “Hehe, yes. I’ve gotten in a good gentle tap or two!”

[...Pause]

[You watch this creature laughing with the Children, an attentive father, despite everything else he is]

[F] “Ah, where are your siblings, by the way?”

[C3] “They’re exploring the Old Places, Father! They said they’d be back by the early times, though.”

[Pause]

[F] “Yes, the Children like to explore in packs at times. I use ARTEMIS to keep a sharp eye on them, I assure you… Especially since the howling began…”

[The Children all pause briefly, scared]

[F] “A-Ah, it’s alright, little ones. I promise. You know I will always protect you, yes?”

[C4] “Yes, Father!”

[C2] “I want to nest before it starts…”

[C3] “Me too! The howlers can’t get you if you’re nesting!”

[Pause???]

[F] “Oh, ah… Let me get them tucked in, One, and then I will try to explain. Erm… Actually, they will probably want me to nest with them as well… I’m sorry. Do you want me to take you back to your cell…?”

[...]

[F] “Need a moment to think? Of course. I’ll get them settled, then… Thank you.”

[SFX: Tentacles moving en masse]

[You watch as he lowers himself into what looks like a shallow pit in the ground, layered with soft flowers and black vines, gathering each Child in one tentacle and carefully tucking them into a soft moss blanket]

[F, humming a bit] “Hmmhmmhmm, settle in our nice little nest, right on a soft bed of flowers. One Child goes here, another goes there, Three, don’t make me snag you by that wild mane of hair!”

[C3 laughs]

[F] “And one last little troublemaker all curled up under a nice blanket of moss, hmmhmm. I love you all, my little ones.”

[The Children sleepily murmur that they love him too, and even call out to you the same affectionate message]

[C2-C4, sleepily] “We love you, Mother!”

[...]

[Pause…]

[SFX: Boots walking on grass]

[Father perks as you approach them, almost holding his breath]

[F] “One…? You’re approaching us…”

[You take a breath, still unsure… Regardless, you spread your arms open and look at him expectantly]

[Pause]

[F, gleeful] “Really? You will rest with us? Oh, joyous eon! You’ve even spread your arms… A-Alright, here. I’m just going to guide my tentacles around your waist and under your arms… Pull you down here…”

[SFX: Tentacles shifting and moving]

[He gently guides you down into the nest of extensions of his and your Children. They happily snuggle up to you the moment you lie down. It feels right, even though you know it’s wrong]

[F] “There we go… Be gentle if you snuggle up, Children. There… Is that alright, One?”

[...Pause]

[He smiles. You think]

[F] “I could ask for no greater gift than you giving us a chance. Thank you, One… Thank you.”

[Pause…]

[It all falls quiet as stars dance outside of Home. You wonder how many have burnt out in the hundreds of years you’ve been here]
