Summary: As the captain of the kingâs personal guard, itâs your duty to protect him from all harm. When a plague starts ravaging the castle, however, you have no choice but to turn to an old friend for help. Once a knight of renown like yourself, the Alchemist was exiled by the king after becoming interested in âblack magicâ. Surprisingly, the Alchemist agrees to helpâŚbut only for your sake.

AUTHOR'S NOTE: The word "draught" is pronounced like "draft"--it's just spelled differently.
SETTING: The Alchemistâs dwelling in the woods. The Alchemist and the Listener were childhood friends, and attended the Knightsâ Academy together. The Alchemist received their knighthood, but they were later exiled by the king after becoming interested in alchemy, which most people consider to be âblack magicâ. The Listener remained in the kingâs service, but still secretly kept in touch with the Alchemist for the sake of their old friendship.
\Sound effectsâpotion shop ambiance. Bubbling cauldrons, gentle clinking of glass vials, shuffling of parchment, etc.\**
\Sound effectâknock, door opening\**
Ahâitâs you! Welcome back, my dear! Please, come in! Just give me a momentâ (mutters to themself) Three drops of wyvern bloodâŚ\Optional sound effectâdripping noise, as they count\** OneâŚtwoâŚthree.
\Sound effectâhissing; magical noise\**
Perfect. (To the Listener) Sorry about thatâsome of these elixirs can getâŚtesty if the ingredients arenât added at precisely the right time. But, erâyou donât want to hear about that. Anyway, welcome, my dear! Itâs so good to see you! By the great dragonâs tooth, youâre all wetâdid you get caught in that storm on your way here? And yetâŚyou still came.
[...]
\chuckle** True, I suppose it takes more than a little rain to stop a knight as brave as yourself. Still, imagining you riding along those dark, narrow paths in the pouring rainâŚmaking your way across that slippery bridge, with the steep ravine belowâŚthe thought makes me shudder. I suppose itâs a good thing I didnât know you were coming, or Iâd have been sick with worry.
[...]
Oh, noâitâs no trouble at all! I didnât mean it like that. Iâm sorry. I promise, youâre never intruding.
[...]
âŚRight. IâŚI suppose thatâs what friends are for.
Awkward pause.
Well, erâwhy donât you come and warm up by the fire? Let me get you a blanket, andâoh, would you perhaps like a cup of hot tea?
[...]
Very well. If you change your mind, just let me know.
\Sound effectâdraping a blanket around the Listenerâs shoulders\**
There we go.
[...]
Like I said, itâs no trouble. Iâd hate to see you catch a chill. After all, we canât have the captain of the crownâs personal guard falling ill, now, can we?
[...]
Yes; I got your letter. Old Flappy may not be the youngest pigeon in the roost, but thankfully his sense of direction is as sharp as ever. I keep it right here, inside my cloak. IâmâŚIâm so sorry I never sent a reply. I tried to write one, but every time I sat down, I justâthe words just kept getting all jumbled up. Iâd end up with a page full of cross-outs. And then Iâd get distracted thinking about you, and how youâd tell me not to overthink it, and Iâd say itâs too late for that, and then youâd laugh and sit down beside me and help me through it, step by step, just like you used to do, back at the academy. Remember? All those late nights we spent in the library, hunched over our desks, quills scratching feverishly while our candles burned low. If it wasnât for you, Iâd never have made it through all those essays. But, somehow, you made it all make sense.
Pause.
Well, in any caseâcongratulations. I canât think of anyone more deserving of the honorâŚeven if His Majesty doesnât deserve to have someone as wonderful as you in hisâ(stops themself)
[...]
Hmm? Oh, no; nevermind. SoâŚhow are you liking it? I hope they see your incredible talents for what they are. If not, wellâŚI donât know what Iâd do.
[...]
(trying not to show their hurt) Oh, no; I understand. I can only imagine how many more responsibilities you must have now. Of course I canât expect you to be able to write or visit quite as often as before. IâmâIâm just glad to know youâre safe. The first time that almost a week passed between your letters, I was worried someone might have discovered usâer, I mean, discovered that you were writing to me. I couldnât live with myself if anything happened to you.
[...]
Thatâs a relief. I canât tell you how much it means to me that you still write to me. Even after everything that happenedâŚeven though you already risked your neck, speaking up for me, back at the sentencingâŚto know that you still care, it means more than I can say. The others would have happily seen me imprisoned for my so-called âblack magicâ, or worse. You were the only one who came to my defense. I can still see you in my mindâs eyeâŚthe way you stepped forward, head held high, your voice cutting across the rest of the council. (growing possessive) Honestly, I donât think the king would have listened to anyone else but you. The way he looked at you, as if you wereâ(stops themself again)
[...]
Oh, nothing. I just meantâsomeone with your confidence, your eloquence, your poise. Itâs no wonder he noticed. IâllâŚIâll always be grateful for how you saved me. And truth be told, exile hasnât been terrible. In fact, I find I prefer my quiet life here in the forest to the demands of knighthood. Just me and my herbs and vialsâŚthe gentle bubbling, the crackling of the fireâŚit suits me much better than the court. If only you wereâif only we could see each other more often, it would be perfect.
Pause.
AnywayâŚwhat can I get for you today, my dear? Another healing draught [pronounced "draft"]? Or perhaps a potion to boost your strength? Maybe I could make you something to increase your stamina⌠Iâd hate to think of you wearing yourself out, with all your new responsibilities.
[...]
Well, of course. You can talk to me about anything. No matter what it is. If itâs important to you, itâs important to me.
[...]
Ah, yes. I had heard about the plague at the castle. A terrible businessâŚfevers, rashes, cold sweats. Are you alright, my dear? Youâre not feeling sick, are you?
[...]
Thank the gods. Still, I donât blame you. I imagine everyone at the castle must be walking around, wondering who may be next. Donât worry, though, my dear. If youâd like, I could make you a protective draught. Itâs a potion to shield one from all ills, even sickness. I confess, itâs not easy to make, but if it means that youâll be safe, thereâs nothing I wouldnât do.
[...]
Oh. But, if itâs not for you, thenâŚwho would it be for?
[...]
I donât understand. Who could possibly need it more than you? \realizes theyâre talking about the king** Oh. OhâŚyou meanâŚ
At this point, the Alchemist becomes convinced that the Listener is seeking the protective draught for the king because theyâre in love with him. The Alchemist tries desperately to hide their pain throughout the next few lines, as they try to think of a new plan.
âŚHmm? No, no; Iâm fine. Really.
[...]
No, of course not, my dear. Why would I be angry with you? Youâre just doing your duty. Itâs your job to protect the king. Even if it means consulting the enemy.
[...]
Not your enemy, perhaps. But I doubt His Majesty would say the same. Iâm a practitioner of black magic, after all. I have the brand to prove it. Imagine, the king benefiting from the very thing for which he exiled one of his closest friends!...
[...]
No, wait; please. Forgive me. I was just surprised by the request, thatâs all. (going to the cupboard, getting out ingredients) Let me seeâŚhmmâŚoh, yes. Ashes of sage; mugwort and wormwood in equal measuresâŚ
[...]
Of course Iâll still make it for you. Whatever he did to me, it was years ago nowâŚwater under the bridge. And even if I did still bear a grudge, if it meant it would make you happy, Iâd do it in a heartbeat. Thereâs nothing I wouldnât do for you, my dear. NowâŚshall we begin?
[...]
Thatâs right. We. Would you mind giving me a hand?
\Sound effectsâsoft bubbling of a cauldron, clinking of glass vials\**
Hmm? Why so nervous, my dear?
[...]
Oh, really? And yet, youâre rubbing at the hem of your tunic again. You'd do the same thing with your uniform, back at the academy, whenever you were nervous about getting a question rightâŚor whenever weâd sneak to the kitchens for a midnight snack, and get caught by the prefect on duty. Somehow, you always managed to talk us out of trouble, but still...I could always see your fingers twisting at the edge of your sleeve.
[...]
You think I could ever forget those times? In any case, you neednât worry about the potion-making process, my dear. I wonât ask you to do anything too complicated. OrâŚperhaps itâs more than that? Afraid, perhaps, to betray your beloved king, by assisting me with my forbidden magic?
[...]
I thought so. Still, isnât this all for his benefit? Sometimes, you have to do what may be considered wrong, in order to ultimately do whatâs right. Besides, you know my craft is not the demonic art that most people perceive it to be.
[...]
Oh, really? Do we not see transformation in nature? Combine yeast with flour and water, and with a bit of warmth, the dough will rise. Heat a pot of water over a fire, and it turns to steam. At its core, alchemy is simply about harnessing the innate properties of things, in order to transform them into something new, something more. Is it truly going against nature to tap into the magic withinâŚmagic that has been there all along, just waiting for someone to help it realize its full potential?
[...]
Trust me, my dear. He wonât find out. I promise. Letâs start small. Add this powder for me, would you? Yes; just like that.
\Sound effectâdust being sprinkled; hissing of the cauldron\**
See; that wasnât so bad, was it? Now, simply take this vial, and put a single drop in. Go on.
\Sound effectâa single drip\**
Perfect. MmmâŚisnât the smell just heavenly? Take a deep breath. YesâŚfeel it fill your lungs, settling there, like a cloud. That soft, sweet scentâŚIâd almost be happy to sit here breathing it forever.
The Alchemist notices the Listener looks woozy.
Ohâare you alright, my dear?
[...]
Ah, of course. After such a long journey, itâs no wonder youâre exhausted. Not to worryâjust leave the rest to me. It wonât take much longer, I promise. A dram of thisâŚa few drops of thatâŚandâŚ
\Sound effectâshimmering\**
There. Would you look at that sheenâsuch a beautiful silver. Now, the final stepâŚwould you care to sample it, my dear?
[...]
Yes; of course. After all, appearances can be deceiving. If His Majesty is going to be drinking it, we need to be sure that itâs made correctly. Weâd hate for him to come to any harm, wouldnât we? Go onâtake a sip.
The Listener takes a sip of the potion.
Good.
[...]
Hmm? Oh, wellâŚyouâll probably start to feel a little lightheaded. Ah, there we go. Not to worryâthatâs just the protective effects setting in. You may feel your mind clouding over, your thoughts slipping awayâŚthe room starting to spin, as your body relaxes, your limbs turning to leadâŚ
[...]
No; no; donât fight it, my dear. Itâs okay.
[...]
Shhhh. I know, my dear. I know itâs scary, but you'll be alright. Itâs only a simple sleeping draught. It wonât have any long-term effects. Would I ever put you in harmâs way? Like I promised, as long as youâre with me, nothing will harm you.
[...]
Shhhh; shhhh. It's alright. Here; letâs get you over to the bed, before you collapse. Lean on meâ
The Listener tries to stand and crumples into their arms.
âOh! Or, on second thought, let me carry you.
They carry the Listener to their bed, setting them down.
There we go. Doesnât it feel good to rest? Let yourself sink into the sheets. Let those heavy eyes close, and allow yourself to drift off.
[...]
I know. Iâm sorry, my dear. I couldnât think of any other way. That bastard was already driving us apart. If I let you go back to him, eventually, heâd find a way to turn you against me. Heâs already ensnared your heartâI wonât let him poison your mind against me, too. Iâd sooner fall on my sword than lose you. But everything will be alright, I promise. Now, just relax, my dear, and let the sleeping draught do its job. YesâŚthatâs it. Sleep, my dear. Iâll be here the whole time. *Sound effectâsoft kiss\* Sweet dreams.
