[Scene opens in your apartment]

[SFX: A knock at the front door]

[A knock comes at your door early in the morning. Confused, you go to answer]

[Pause]

[SFX: The door being opened]

[To your surprise, it’s your ex]

[Pause!]

[He looks down at you, expression unreadable]

“Hey…”

[Pause???]

“Yeah, it, um… It is seven in the morning. I canceled a podcast to be here early so I could take you to the appointment, maybe get you some breakfast?”

[...]

[He sighs, eyes ringed in fatigue]

“...You don’t have to say anything. I can see the ‘Where the Hell was all of this the last five years?’ in your eyes. Babe, I don’t want to make this harder for you. But I want to be a part of this so… so I need to know how close I’m allowed to be to you…”

[...]

[You sigh and step inside to let him in]

“Thanks for letting me in… and, uh, sorry for looking like a potential serial killer. No sleep plus not getting all the eyeliner off makes for a very brooding look, apparently.”

[...?]

[He pauses as you cup his face, tilting it a bit]

“Uh-? Why are you cupping my face…?”

[Pause!]

“Eheh… yeah, I don’t doubt I look exhausted. I’m so behind on everything, I can’t get organized, I have an album to finish in three months… It’s a bit much.”

[...]

[He rests his hand over yours]

“...I’ll be OK, beautiful… But you should know that it’s taking all of the brain cells I have left not to kiss you or ask if I can rest my ear on your tummy.”

[...]

“...I can do the second one? Yeah?”

[Pause]

[He smiles and kneels, resting his ear against your stomach]

“...I… I can feel him! He’s kind of… humming a little…”

[Pause]

[A big smile breaks out over his face and he kisses your stomach]

“Hey! Hey… I’m your Daddy… Man… I bet you’re gonna be so cool when you’re born. You’ll have fans of your own, no problem.”

[...]

[He sighs]

“I’m gonna do my absolute best to not make my lifestyle affect our child… I want them to be able to have some damned privacy. Some… Some, ah…”

[He wavers a little, eyes fluttering, before he collapses on his side]

[SFX: The Speaker slumping over]

[Pause!!!]

“Mnnhh…?”

[You kneel, hurriedly digging your phone out of your pocket]

[Pause!!!!]

“I… I-I’m OK, baby, shh… Here, lemme put a hand on that cute tummy… Shhh… See?”

[Pause!]

[He blinks a few times as you try and help him sit up]

“...Fell… over? Again? Man…”

[Pause?!?!]

“Hey… Hey! Baby, breathe, you’re panicking! I’m OK! I promise, I just haven’t been able to get any sleep in a few days! I’m not high or drunk, and Stan drove me here, so I wasn’t driving while sleep-deprived, OK?”

[SFX: Rapid heartbeats]

[...]

[He manages to sit up and pull you close with a groan]

“Nngh… C’mon, body, sit up… C’mere… Shh, c’mere, please… Let me hold you…”

[Pause…]

[You embrace. You’re shaking. He’s shaking harder]

“...Tried and true…”

[...Pause]

[He smiles]

“Red and blue… I’m here… I’m not dying, I’m not going anywhere, but I need to know you’re OK. You are who matters most right now, not my inability to take some fucking serotonin or whatever.”

[Pause]

“Melatonin… Pfft, shut up, you… beautiful lady, you.”

[Pause <3]

“Heh… C’mon, we should get back to Stan. Can’t get you breakfast before the appointment if I’m sat here on my sorry ass, can I?”

[...]

“...Baby, what’s wrong?”

[Pause]

“You want to reschedule it? Oh baby, I’m sorry, I didn’t-”.

[Pause]

[He nods, voice calm]

“OK. You don’t want me to take ownership of how you’re feeling right now, understood. I’ll call Dr. Casale’s office right now and pay their freakishly high cancellation fee. Can you get into bed while I do that?”

[Pause…]

“Good girl. That’s my good girl. C’mon, nngh! Up we get…”

[You both hold each other steady as you climb to your feet]

[SFX: If desired, floor creaks/groans from the Speaker as they move]

“There we go… Go on. I’ll call her right now.”

[You make your way to your bed and settle in while listening to him from a distance:]

“Dr. Casele…. Here she is. Alright… Time to remember how to talk to other humans…”

[Pause]

“...Hi! Yes, I-... Oh. Fucking menu options, Christ. Yeah, yeah, option two, please.”

[You have to muffle a giggle. It’s terribly difficult]

[Pause]

“...Yes, hi, uh. I was calling on behalf of-... Oh! Oh, the phone pulled up my name in your little system. Neat. Uh, yeah, this is her partner…. Um. She asked me to reschedule her appointment this morning to something at a later time…”

[Pause…]

“Yes, I understand the cancellation fee. Charge it to the other card on the account, please. Actually, just have that be the main one from now on. Please.”

[Pause…]

“Thanks. Let me look at her calendar here… Mmh, the 20th at ten looks to be open, yeah. I’ll let her know.”

[Pause…]

“Congratulations? Oh! Haha, t-thanks! I’m… surprised at how excited I am, hehe…”

[Pause…]

“A lot of new dads are like that? Aww… Well, I hope to be a good one. Thanks, Kelly!”

[Pause]

[SFX: The call ending]

[He shuffles in after a bit, steps haggard]

“Didja hear all that?”

[Pause]

“Good.”

[He yawns, eyes a bit dopey]

“...Mmh… Your body was always sexy, sweetheart, but that baby bump… Just, damn, I can’t even words, it’s just…. Yes.”

[You try to hide a smile but his goofy grin tips you over]

[Pause?]

“Yeah… Yeah, I can cuddle up for a little bit… Nothing else matters to me right now than making sure you’re OK.”

[Pause]

[SFX: The blanket shifting]

[He crawls in next to you and practically collapses in your arms]

“Mmh… sleepy… Man, I missed this bed… I missed you…”

[...]

[You miss him, too…]

“...Night night, sweetie… Night night, baby…”

[With that, his head hits the pillow and he begins to snore with the conviction of a lawnmower]
