Part 2

Context: Hundreds of years ago, you were the first prisoner here. Prisoner 001. You were there when they began experimenting on prisoners deep in the recesses of space. When an outbreak shook the massive space prison, and humans began to be forcefully assimilated as 'Joined'. You weren't going to 'join', no matter how many waves of your former prisoners and slavers came at you, foaming at the mouth with infection and rage. It'd take years but they'd soon learn that still flesh was not the thing that taught them fear. It was you.

[C] = One of the Children

[F] = Father, Hivemind Overlord / Lover

[Scene opens in a vast, near-abandoned space prison]

[SFX: Pipes groaning/steel settling followed by a pair of footsteps walking on metal]

[In a near-abandoned space prison, you sit in a cell you’ve sat in for hundreds of years, watching the cameras. A bit of movement catches your eye before you realize it’s Him… and a smaller version of himself?]

[C] “Um, um, I made a basket for Mother, to put all of the other nice things in! And, and Nergal said she’d like red, so I painted it all red for her. Do you think she’ll like that, Father?”

[The taller of the entities clears his throat]

[F] “Ah, ahm… I am sure she’ll be delighted with all of the efforts of the Children, dear. Now, you remember what I said, right? If you see her… you need to run. Alright?”

[Pause]

[C] “Aww… I know you said to, but why? We’re bringing her food and gifts, right up to her big, metal room!”

[F] “One…. erm… Mother can be… easily spooked by us, little one. And when spooked, her instinct is to, well, kill the thing spooking her. It’s not that she would want to, I assure you, but… when an animal is wounded enough times, they tend to bite first…”

[Pause]

[C] “Is Mother always like that?”

[Father, as he calls himself, looks away with an almost blush]

[F] “Your mother can be… volatile, yes. Really, if she emerges from her hold here, there’s no guarantee that she wouldn’t attack… but you must understand, it’s not her fault, sweet child.”

[C] “Does… she not love us?”

[F] “She does! She… does not love where we come from, however. You see, this place, it was once something called a ‘pris-on’ for beings called ‘humans’. We were once these things, child. Humans.”

[Pause]

[SFX: Spaceship ambiance]

[C] “Why are we not that anymore?”

[F] “Well… Prisons… I believe… were places to hold people who were being punished for doing bad things. And because they were being punished, the people holding them would use their bodies for odd things. For testing, mostly.”

[C] “Testing?”

[SFX: Plates/gifts being placed down]

[Pause]

[F] “Like how we see if a place is safe by carefully poking a tentacle or two around… except it was more of a ‘what happens if you inject humans with sick’... That sick changed them into us. Let all of them come together in beautiful unity and evolution. It took a long time because of how big Home is… and even longer because of Her.”

[Pause]

[C] “Mother?”

[F, with a dreamlike sigh] “Yes… Then, she was called Prisoner One, as she’d been here the longest. The shift from human to Joined used to be quite violent… Very insistent. She witnessed our earlier selves forcing humans like her to transform and it made her very sad and angry…”

[He sighs dreamily, almost wistful]

[F] “She slaughtered millions <3. We came back, of course, but… after a few decades, the mere sound of her made me feel afraid. Made… US feel afraid… so we scattered to the other side of the prison, built defenses, and prayed to gods we didn’t know she would let us live…”

[SFX: More things being placed]

[C, fascinated] “But how did she become Mother, then?”

[F] “You know… we were apart so long before we remet. Hundreds of years. I’d all but begun to think I’d imagined the whole thing as a fever dream… Those eyes, burning in the black of the abyss, staring me down… When I came to explore once more, having convinced myself she wasn’t real, I was, ahm… quickly corrected with a boot on my throat….”

[He sighs happily, cupping his cheek]

[F] “It was like falling in love all over again… I gasped and said, ‘Oh, it’s you!’ as if seeing an old friend after years! We embraced… Well, she strangled me, but I was so giddy to see her once more!”

[C] “Oh! Was she always so… hostile, Father? The times you visited after?”

[Pause]

[F] “It… Our relationship has been very touch and go… I learned, quickly, that if I am not here, she essentially stays catatonic in her quarters here. If she happens to be outside when I come to leave gifts, she’ll normally prepare to fight. If I keep my distance, she will simply watch me until I leave… if I am too close, she will charge me, and I get to hold her for a little while… It’s quite nice.”

[Pause]

[C] “Do you think she’ll ever want to be with us all the time?”

[F, sad] “I think… one step at a time, little one. Our relationship is complicated, as a human might say. I, or We, know the hostility will more than likely never recede… but she has let me close a few times, over the years. When our bodies have both yearned in unison… That is part of why you Children exist. Why there is new life from the old ones I used to be.”

[Pause]

[C] “OK! Well, maybe, one day, we’ll get to see her, too! I hope so!”

[F] “I do hope so, little one… Go back now, to the warmth. I will finish leaving our gifts for her, and see if she might answer… But privacy would be appreciated.”

[C] “OK, Father! Be safe!”

[The Child scampers off, back toward the part of the complex that still breathes, leaving Father on his own. He rests a hand on your door with a wistful sigh]

[F] “...I miss you. I wish I knew how to be closer to you without offending…”

[Pause]

[F] “...There are so many hearts in me that are yours, One. These feelings are still so very human, and so very strong. Admiration. Obsession. Respect. Lust. Love… Genuine, warm, love for someone bonded with me. All of me.”

[SFX: The metal pipes groaning]

[...]

[F, with a sigh] “...The children are so curious about you… I wish I could show them, even if just for a moment… But I don’t wish to disturb you. I won’t until your body calls for mine again if you will allow it…”

[Pause]

[He rests his lips on the door briefly]

[F] “...I hope the food is good, my violent lover. And the gifts… the Children join in on making them, more and more. We are becoming… family, in an odd way. I think we’d all quite like it if you joined us, one of these nights. You are… always welcome, my bride.”

[SFX: Father beginning to move away/an airlock hissing open]

[He turns to lumber away when the airlock hisses and the door to your cell opens. You meet his gaze, assuming those are still his eyes, and he looks back, startled but overjoyed]

[F] “One! You came out!”

Note: Don’t feel too bad for him, he’s the one that almost literally pointed to DOOM woman and said, “That one, please. That’s the homicidal kitten I’d like to pet, thank you”.
