\Sound effect—pouring tea, clinking of china cups\**

Here you go. Careful—it’s hot. \takes their own cup; sips** Aaaah. How’s your sister doing? Is she settling in okay?

The Listener nods.

Oh, good. I still think she’s secretly an enchantress or something—I can’t remember the last time Nyldru let a “plebian” even get near his priceless art, let alone allowing someone to stay with him. And a human, at that! I guess we’re lucky that he thought she so perfectly embodied \imitates Nyldru's voice** “the grace and dignity of a pre-Raphaelite maiden.”

“What does that even mean?”

…Don’t ask me. I have no idea. Still, being able to charm a stuffy old bore like him? And the fact that she can stay awake through all his long droning talks about expressionist brush techniques and neoclassical sculpture and whatnot? She’s gotta be magic. Case closed.

“Speaking of magic…"

Hmm? Speaking of magic, what?

"How long will the Guildmaster be stuck as a duck?”

\chuckle** Haha, “stuck as a duck”—that’s funny! Oh, sorry. Don’t worry—the spell will last for a good long time. That monster will probably be waddling around till the winter solstice. But even when it does wear off, now that we’ve removed your mark, there’s no way the Guild can track you. And even if they did somehow manage to find us, well, with your trapping skills and my magic, getting turned into a duck would be the least of their worries.

“Why DID the spell turn the Guildmaster into a duck, by the way?”

Yeah, I was wondering about that, too. Why not a chipmunk, or a bunny, or something like that? We may never know for sure…but I like to think that maybe it was because of The Ugly Duckling story. I’ve never really thought of magic like a set of rules…to me, it’s more like a friend that you’re working with. Maybe it could sense that I was trying to do something good, and decided it would give something back. Or maybe the gods just have a really great sense of humor. Either way, that Guildmaster won’t be turning into a beautiful swan anytime soon; that’s for darn sure.

“Thanks again, Tam. For saving me, and—and for everything else.”

Of course, Lucky. You don’t need to keep thanking me. You’re my friend—that’s what friends are for. I don’t know what I would’ve done if something had happened to you—I’d do it all again in a heartbeat, if it meant you’d be safe. But, I, um—I wanted to say thank you, as well. \soft, vulnerable** Thank you for, um…for not thinking I’m weird. Or, if you do, then, thanks for sticking by me anyway. You’re really kind, and I’m really grateful.

“Hey, don’t put yourself down.”

Huh? What do you mean, don't put myself down?

“I’m not sticking by you in spite of your weirdness, Tam. I like your weirdness.”

Wait—you like my weirdness!? Really!? You’re not just saying that, right?

“Of course not. It’s what makes you, you.”

Well, I guess that’s true—without my quirks, I wouldn’t really be me. Still, I, um…wow. \soft, starting to get emotional** I never thought anyone would actually…I mean, I always thought I’d be lucky if I could get through life with everyone just tolerating me, let alone actually liking me…but, now, with you, I…I can finally be myself.

“You okay?”

\sniffles** Yeah, yeah; I’m fine! I’m all good!

“Do you want a hug?”

Yes, please.

\Sound effect—the Listener hugs Tam**

Mmm…you give the best hugs, Lucky. I’m so glad we’re both finally safe.

The Listener asks if they’d like to read the next chapter of Listener’s favorite book.

The Listener tells them the correct chapter.

Ohhhh, yeah, that’s right. I forgot. Do you want more tea first?

The Listener shakes their head.
