Unmarked text = the asshole ex

[NR] = The news reporter

[T] = The train ticketer

***

[Scene opens at the White Whale bar, later at night]

[SFX: Outdoor bar ambiance]

[You hurry over to a bar sitting near the park and wave to your boyfriend. He waves back with that same smile]

“Babe, you made it! Careful with all that running…”

[Pause!]

[He chuckles a little]

“Hey, hey, I do not mind you being a little chubby! I’ve said plenty of times before. I’m just saying, I’m glad you could make it.”

[Pause?]

“Why’d I ask you here tonight? Well, we’ve been together for six months on the dot, so I figured we’d have a little mini-anniversary. After all, little miss film student over here has been constantly busy with her monster movie, hmm?”

[Pause!]

[He rolls his eyes, good-natured]

“Yeah, yeah, the corpses look very realistic. C’mon, focus. I wanted to tell you some big news tonight. I even got your favorite order of nachos.”

[<3]

“Hehe, of course. I know you love your spice. So…”

[Pause?]

[He puts an arm around you with that charming, warm smile, and leans down]

“Ready to hear my big news?”

[Pause!]

[He lowers his voice to a whisper]

“...I only asked you out on a dare.”

[...]

[His smile turns cruel]

“Was surprised you said ‘yes’ so eagerly… but you’ve not exactly been shy about saying how attractive you think I am… Shame the feeling isn’t mutual. Oh! I promised pics. Stand still, Chubbs, let me get some good ones!”

[...]

[You feel everything grow numb and muted as you try and process what he said. Your eyes go from staring blankly into his to being blinded by his phone camera as he snaps pics of your reaction]

“Ha! I knew you’d cry like a baby. You introverts are always such babies about this sort of thing, you know? You gotta stop taking it so personally, you know? Just the natural order.”

[SFX: Pat pat]

[He pats your shoulder twice]

“Well, thanks for winning me that bet, Chubbs. Not gonna lie, getting through all the hugging and kissing was pretty rough, but I’ll manage. Don’t worry, I’ll make sure to try and tone down the double-chin a little before these pics go live for everyone to see.”

[...]

[You just stand there, your ribs feeling like they’re made of broken glass]

“See you at class tomorrow, Chubbs! Hope you’re ready for a grand debut. Take it easy on the nachos, though.”

[He smiles, flicks a bit of your hair, and saunters off without a care in the world]

[SFX: The bar music pulsing in the BG (muted)]

[...]

See you at class tomorrow…

[...]

[No. You’ve decided he won’t see you at class tomorrow. As a matter of fact, none of them are ever going to see you again.]

****

[Scene transitions to the Speaker’s home]

[SFX: The TV playing in the BG while the front door opens and he trudges in]

“Boys, the plan went off without a hitch! You should’ve seen the look on the little tattle-tale’s face. Wait, do you have the News on? Gross, why?”

[Pause!]

“Don’t tell me to shut up, just tell me what-”.

[He stops cold as he sees the report on the news, and finally groks the news reporter’s words]

[NR] “...young lady was found in the park area near the local bar scene, violently stabbed over thirty-eight times. Officers believe she was attacked while exiting the White Whale bar by an unknown assailant who is considered still at large.”

[...]

“...No, it can’t…”

[NR] “The young woman remains unidentified at this time. No wallet or phone was found on her body, and police are attempting to have a sketch artist construct a picture of her face prior to the stabbing. It is believed that she was attacked at 9:32 PM and died an hour later of blood loss. If anyone has any further information-”.

[SFX: The TV screen shattering]

[The Speaker grabs the remote and hurls it through the screen with an enraged cry]

“This is a joke! Which one of you fuckers is working with her to pull this?!”

[His roommates look at him in stunned silence]

“... This isn’t funny. This is… Fuck, this is too far, even for me! So just admit it!”

[He stares around the circle, wild-eyed, completely irrational. His voice cracks as he utters a single, pathetic:]

“...Please.”

[...]

[Again, they stare at him in stunned silence]

“...No. No, this isn’t… This was just meant to be a joke! You all know it was just meant to be a harmless little joke! You know I’d never hurt someone like… like that! No, this is bullshit, I’m going to see for myself!”

[SFX: The others springing up and trying to grab at him]

“GET OFF OF ME! SHE’S NOT DEAD, THIS IS JUST SOME STUPID FUCKING PAYBACK! I KNOW HER, I KNOW WHERE TO FIND HER, SO LET ME GO!”

[Pause]

“I DON’T CARE IF THEY THINK I PLAYED A PART! I DIDN’T DO ANYTHING! I…I didn’t…”

[...]

[SFX: Him passing out]

***

[Scene transitions to across town at an old, crumbling train station]

[SFX: A distant train whistle]

[You wait at the train station, watching the news report about your own murder, supposedly.]

[NR] …identifying the young woman is still proving difficult, so please come forward if you have any information regarding the Jane Doe murdered near White Whale bar.”

[...]

[The ticketer hands you your train ticket]

[T] “Here you are, Miss. One ticket to Moonvale.”

[Pause]

[T] Aye aye! You be careful out there, Miss… That poor girl got killed far too close to here for my comfort.”

[Pause]

[You thank him and put your pack on your back and take one last look at the shitty town you grew up in]

[SFX: A train whistle]

[The pain is still violent. Fresh. But you know it will fade, in time. You have no idea when it will happen but, one day, you know you’ll be as cold inside as the crickets chirping in the fields]

Never again.

[SFX: The train pushing into the station]

No one will ever have this heart, ever again.

[SFX: People stepping off the train]

No more heart. No more pain. Cold as the night sky.

[SFX: People boarding the train, the Listener included]

[You shuffle on board with your meager things and take a window seat to look up at the stars]

Cold.

[SFX: People adjusting/sitting]

Dead.

[Eventually, the announcements come and the train sets off. Everything fades behind you. You shut your eyes and try to rest… but you know rest is still very far away]

…Heartless.

[To be continued]

Note: Alright, people, be honest… does this need a continuation or no? Cause I feel like a colossal asshole having written this ; w ;
