Summary: Itâs been nearly a week since you let Tam, a dragon, go free from one of your traps. Today, as you once again make your rounds in the forest, you hear a familiar voice. Tam has returned to pay their âlucky humanâ a visit.
CW: mentions of indentured servitude, mention/description of injuries caused by past physical abuse

SETTING: A forest.
Human? Human! Itâs you! My lucky human! I almost couldnât tell with the hood of your cloak up like thaâ
\Sound effectâa blade being drawn\**
âAaaah! Wait, no; hold on! Itâs me! Tam; remember??? The dragon you set free from that trap last week!?...
\Sound effectâsheathing a blade\**
\relieved exhale** Whew! Thatâs a relief. I was afraid you might not remember me.
The Listener asks how they could possibly forget a huge dragon.
Do I really think you could possibly forget a big dragon like me? Wait, you think Iâm big? Really!? WowâŚthank you! You must not have met very many dragons, though. My hatchmates always used to call me ânuggetâ. You know, like a gold nugget. Small, in other words. Some of them still do...either that, or âbookwyrm.â Though, I guess that one fits pretty well.
âTam, what the hell are you doing here!?â
What am I doing here? Oh, I, uhâI wanted to see if you were okay. You looked worried last time, when I left. Your mouth smiled, but it didnât ever reach your eyes.
âYou idiot! How did you know Iâd be alone!? If other members of the Guild were with me, youâd be dead meat!â
IâI know. I made sure to be careful, though! I kept a sharp eye out for traps this time. After last time, I looked through all of my books for information about them. I couldnât find much, but at least I know what a couple of them look like now.
âWow, you really love to read, huh?â
\sheepish** Is it that obvious? YeahâŚI love to read. Some dragons hoard gold or jewels or treasures. Nyldru hoards priceless artâ-you should see his cave; itâs like a fancy museum. But I hoard books. Iâm really glad my breath weapon didnât turn out to be fire, ha haâŚthat wouldnât have worked out so well.
The Listener chuckles. âNo kidding. SoâŚwhat do you like to read?â
What do I like to read? Anything I can get my claws on! Magic, history, science, storybooks. My hoard is still pretty small compared to someâitâs not like I can just walk into a human town in my dragon form and buy books, you know? My disguise magic works okay, but still, Iâm always afraid some mage will see through it. Iâm working on it, though! Someday, I want to have a whole library. What about you, human? Do you like to read?
The Listener shrugs. âI used to. I justâŚdonât have much time for it anymore.â
You used to, butâŚyou donât have time for it anymore? What do you mean?
âItâsâitâs nothing. Forget it.â
It doesnât sound like nothing. Your voice is tilting down, and suddenly you wonât look at me. Are you okay?
âIâm fine. I justâhave a lot to do these days for the Guild.â
OhâŚyeah. You just have a lot of work to do for the Guild. ThatâŚthat makes sense, I guess. Do youâdo you like working for them?
The Listener snorts. âOf course not. Does anyone?â
No? But, if you donât like it, then, why stay? Do humans always have to do the same job?
âNot all of us. But I do. I canât leave the Guild.â
You canât leave? Why not?
âI donât want to talk about it.â
You donât want to talk about it? WellâŚokay. If you ever do want to talk, though, youâre always welcome to talk to me. I know I talk a lot, myself, but Iâm also happy to listen. Just poke me and tell me to shut up.
âUmâŚthanks. Youâre definitely not what I wouldâve expected from a dragon.â
Iâm not what you wouldâve expected from a dragon? Oh, thank you! Waitâis that a compliment?
The Listener nods.
It is? Oh, good. Come to think of it, most of the dragons in your human storybooks are pretty awful creatures. I guess thatâs probably what you expected, right?...I know; I donât get it! Why are they all so obsessed with kidnapping princesses? And then guarding them in towers? Towers make terrible lairsâthereâs barely any room to sneeze, let alone stretch out! And theyâre so wet and draftyâyouâd get scale rot within a month. Iâm starting to think those authors had never met an actual dragon before. Oh, sorryâŚIâm rambling again. Amâam I the first dragon you met?
The Listener nods.
Oh, wow! So, Iâm your first dragon, and youâre my first human! I donât know if Iâm really the best dragon to start out withâŚbut Iâm definitely lucky that you were the first human I met. Heyâif itâs okay, could I maybe call you that instead? âLuckyâ? It sounds so much nicer than âhumanâ.
The Listenerâs mouth curls up. âSure. Why not?â
Sure? \happy laugh** Okay, great! Thanks, Lucky!
The Listener says itâs been great to see them, but they need to start heading back.
Huh? You need to start heading back? You need to finish your rounds before dark? Oh yeah, of course. Sorryâitâs just, this is the most fun Iâve had in ages. I really like being around you, Lucky.
The Listener offers their hand.
Huh? Youâre sticking your hand out at me? Am I missing something?
The Listener explains.
OHâŚhumans shake hands sometimes, when you greet or leave each other. Can I try? My paw is pretty big, but maybe itâll work.
They close their clawed hand around the Listenerâs.
Okay, so I grab your hand. Now what?...I just shake my paw up and down? Alrightâhere goes.
He shakes the Listenerâs hand in a wild, uncontrolled fashion. The Listener is pulled along for the ride, like an inner tube being pulled behind a boat. As this happens, the hood of the Listenerâs cloak slips backwards off their head, exposing their face.
Whoa! Oh, gods! SorryâI didnât mean to yank you around so hard. Iâm not that strong compared to some dragons, but I guess I should try to beâ
\Sees a black eye & bruises on the Listenerâs face**
WaitâLucky! Your face! Oh, godsâwhat happened!?
âItâs nothing! Iâm FINE.â
Itâs NOT nothing! Your eyeâitâs swollen! And the purple and red on your cheekâI may not know too much about humans, but I know your skinâs not supposed to be those colors! WasâŚwas this an accident? OrâŚ
Finally, the Listenerâs resolve crumbles. They shake their head.
It wasnât an accident? \serious** Luckyâwho did this to you? PleaseâŚtell me.
The Listener explains.
âŚThe Guildmaster? Because you didnât manage to meet your quota last week? \softly, riddled with guilt** Oh, BahamutâŚthisâŚthis is because of me, isnât it? Because you let me go. If youâd brought me in, thenâŚhe wouldnât haveâŚ
The Listener explains that they donât regret it.
Huh? You donât regret it? No one deserves to die like the victims of the Guild? Oh, LuckyâŚI, I donât know what to say. Iâm so sorry. Waitâwill you come back with me?
âCome back home? With you???â
Yeahâback home, to my cave. I have some medicine that might help.
âNo, IâI donât know if thatâs a good idea.â
Please? The sun has almost set anywayâIâd hate to think of you trying to find your way in the forest alone, at night. Iâd like to know that youâre safe, even if itâs just for one night. If it means you might get punished more, though, then, thatâs different. If you need to be back tonight, then, in that case, I can walk you out of the forest, if youâd like.
The Listener agrees to come back with him.
Huh? Youâll come back with me? Ohâokay, great! Thank you. Hereâdo you want to climb on my back? Itâll go faster if we fly.
\Sound effectâthe Listener climbs on his back\**
Sorry if my back ridge is poking you. Are you okay up there? Alright. Hang on tightâthis might be kinda bumpy!
\Sound effectâwings flapping away\**
