âââââââââââââââââââââ
It seems like youâre finally waking up. Miss? Can you hear me?
Oh, good. Good afternoon, miss. Orâis it good evening? Itâs been so long since Iâve been out in the daytimeâwhen exactly does âafternoonâ change to âevening?â
The Listener, in their drug-dazed state, suddenly sits up.
Easy, now. The drugs they use to subdue their prey are very strong. Youâll probably feel pretty groggy for awhile. Iâd recommend you stay in bed, at least untilâ
The Listener, in their drug-dazed state, scrambles out of bed. As soon as they do, their legs give out, and they pitch forward.
Whoa!â
\Sound effectâBeaumont catches the Listener\**
Itâs alright; Iâve got you. Here, why donât youâ
The Listener starts to struggle hard.
Missâplease, calm down. I know youâre afraid, butâ \grunting, trying to hold the Listener back** âI swear, Iâm not going to hurt you!--
The Listener continues to struggle, whimpering. âNo; no; please, Lovell; noâ!â
What? No! Iâm not Lovell!
The Listener finally stops, looking at him.
Thatâs right. My name is Beaumont. Do you remember? Back at the auction house, Lovell was bidding for you, butâŚI bought you instead. Iâm sorryâyou probably donât want to think about that right now. Hereâlet me help you get back into bed. There you go.
âYouâreâŚBeaumont?â
Hmm? YesâZachariah Beaumont. Most of the servants just call me Mr. B, though. I swear, all of the Five Familiesâ names sound so pretentious. Beaumont, Covington, LovellâŚ
Er, I apologize. AnywayâŚafter the auction, I brought you back home to my manor. I figured youâd need some time to recover from the drugs. The Lady only knows whatâs in those syringesâŚ
âThenâare youâ?â
Hmm? Ohâyes, Iâm a vampire, too.
The Listenerâs eyes widen, their hand flying up to their neck.
I canât say I blame you for checking. But donât worryâyou wonât find any marks. My family believes itâs wrong to drink from someone without their consent. You donât have to worry about me taking advantage of you. Not in that way, or any other way.
âSo IâŚI wonât be your bloodbag?â
No, you will not be my âbloodbagâ. \grimacing** Ugh, I hate that word. Many vampires do enslave humans, keeping them alive as a self-replenishing source of bloodâŚbut you will simply be my guest; thatâs all.
âBut thenâif youâre not going to drink from meâwhy did you..?â
Then, why did I buy you, if not for your blood? \softly** IâŚI just couldnât stand to see another person fall into that piece of sh*tâs clutches. I know what Lovell does to his victims. He plays with them for awhile, until he gets bored, and thenâŚ\trails off with a grimace** But anyway, when I saw you up there on the stageâŚshackled, helpless, bruisedâŚI just couldnât let that happen to you.
âYouâre sure it didnât have something to do with my smell? Heâhe said that IâŚâ
Yes; I am aware you have aâŚparticularly lovely scent. It doesnât matter, though. Unless you tell me youâre okay with it, I will not touch you. To do otherwise would make me no better than him.
âIs it common for someone to have blood like mine?â
\serious** Is it common to have a scent like yours? No, actuallyâitâs highly unusual. Some humansâ blood does smell better than othersâŚbut to have a scent as incredible as yoursâŚIâve never seen anything quite like it.
âWhy?â
Do I know why? WellâŚno, I shouldnât speculate. I promise you, though, Iâll look into it as soon as I can. In the meantime, if thereâs anything you need, please, donât hesitate to let me know.
âShould I call you âMaster?ââ
Oh, by our Lady of Night; no! You donât need to call me âMaster.â Technically, I did buy you, butâ \trails off, exasperated; shakes his head** Other vampires may insist on going by their titles, butâat least in privateâyou can just call me Mr. B, or Zachariah, or whatever you like.
âZach.â
Hmm? âZachâ?
The Listener giggles, still a little loopy. âZach.â
\chuckle** I canât tell if thatâs the drugs, or your nerves talking. Wellâeither way, if thatâs what works for you, then thatâs fine with me. \muses to himself** âZachâ. Thatâs the first time Iâve heard that. Hmmâconcise; modern; to the point. I like it. \to the Listener** AndâŚIâm sorry. Here weâve been talking all this time, and I never asked for your name.
The Listener hesitantly tells him their name.
Thatâs a beautiful name. So warm and melodicâŚlike a nightingaleâs song in summer. Itâs a pleasure to meet you.
WellâIâll give you some space to recover. After what youâve been through, I can imagine you might have trouble sleeping, so I brought some books from the library. If thereâs anything else you need, just ring the bell on the nightstand. Maryanne will be in to check on you from time to time. If you wish, she brews a lovely cup of chamomile tea. Then, maybe, when youâre betterâŚif youâre okay with itâŚwe could talk again.
The Listener nods.
Alright then. Rest well, Nightingale. Iâll see you soon.
