You two bicker often, but you know it's only because he wants what is best for the pack, including you. But you almost swear his eyes linger on you, from time to time... just a little too long.

[Scene opens within the pack’s encampment]

[SFX: Afternoon forest ambiance and excited wolf pups yipping]

[You are watching over the pups while your fellow werewolves work and converse around you. A massive figure strides toward you, imposing, a scar through one eye]

“Shaman.”

[You lower your ears to him and acknowledge him:]

[Pause]

“'Yes, my Alpha'? Hnh. Alright, what did you break this time? Hm?”

[Pause!]

“You’re only that honey-tongued when you’re up to mischief… or trying to convince me that you aren’t shirking work.”

[Pause!!]

[He folds his arms over his broad chest, unimpressed]

“Watching the pups? It looks like you’re just playing with them.”

[Pause…]

[He sighs]

“Shaman, I appreciate you watching them, but we need herbs prepared for tonight’s ceremony. How far along are you?”

[...]

[He sighs and rubs the bridge of his nose]

“...Almost done, she says. Hmph. C’mon, I give you enough slack normally. I need this done, so you’ll need to find a way to balance both tasks.”

[...]

“...Excuse me?”

[Pause????]

“... ‘How dumb do I have to be to think that’s possible?’... Shaman…”

[Pause???]

“What? Yes, I am sure it is difficult but I also know you can be incredibly resourceful when inspired. So I am inspiring you to get off your lazy tail and prove to everyone why you’re my right hand, and my guiding light.”

[PaUse??]

[He huffs at you, annoyed]

“Hff… I am the Alpha, Shaman. I am prepared to handle every single role that my pack members play, and that includes yours. I’m not so old that I’ve forgotten how to watch over the pups.”

[Pause]

[He lets out a low growl]

“Rrgh… You’re forgetting your place.”

[Pause!]

“Woman, if you don’t-! Rrgh, fine, FINE! I’ll sit with the pups for a few minutes while you catch up. Hmph… If you weren’t so lazy…”

[Pause?!]

“Nothing! I didn’t say anything, now stop pursing those lips at me, stop playing with those pretty locks, and get to work!”

[You do as he asks, watching him sit with the pups with a big groan]

"Alright, you little terrors. Let's have you practice your pounces. Form up!"

[SFX: Excited wolf pups]

“There we go… Hmhm, you boys are growing up to be quite strong! But, ah, maybe headbutt each other a little less often? I think your mothers would appreciate it.”

[...<3]

“Ah! Now, now, remember what Lady Kyrenis teaches us about discipline, children.”

[SFX: Grumpy wolf pups]

“Children… Stop. Stop growling at each other, immediately.”

[SFX: Fighting wolf pups]

[He puts on his stern voice]

“Hey!”

[SFX: Fighting wolf pups]

[You only see the look of bewildered panic on his face only briefly, but it makes your month, regardless]

“Hey. Hey! I said stop! C’mon, let’s put that energy into practicing pouncing. C’mon, form up!”

[SFX: Genocidal wolf pups]

“Hey… Hey! HEY! Rrgh, boys, you will practice your pouncing this instant!”

[SFX: Rowdy wolf pups]

[The genuine distress in the Alpha’s voice makes you glad you got up today]

“Stop! Spit the bee out! No, Alise, stop trying to run for the lake, you can’t swim! Gah, Tevin! TEVIN, GIVE ME BACK MY KNIFE!”

[SFX: More rowdy wolf pups]

[Pause?]

“N-No, I am FINE. I have it handled and I definitely do not need your help, Shaman! I am in control, so focus on getting those herbs prepared at all costs!”

[Pause?]

“What?! Yes, even if a meteorite crushes us, you finish those damned herbs!”

[...]

“I… I meant darned… Rrgh… I’m going to have to apologize to so many brothers and sisters later. Phew, that’s fine. That’s a step toward peace, thus I can exhale… phew… Alright. I am calm. I am centered. I am prepared to confront this, not as my past self, the warrior I was, but as the man I am today. I shall go forward with…rrgh…patience…and…nngh…kindness….”

[Pause…]

[He growls. Whines. Growl-whines]

“For the love of-! We just cleaned that up! Gunther! GUNTHER, YOU ARE NOT A WEREWOLF HUNTER, GIVE ME BACK MY KNIFE!! I don’t care if Tevin stole it first! Oh for the love of…! Did you bewitch them to behave like actual demons, Shaman?!”

[SFX: Laughing wolf pups]

[Pause!]

“Yes, I DID say that I could handle any role within the pack and I AM handling it just fine! I fear no demons, children or not!”

[...]

“...Tevin just ran off with the knife, didn’t he…”

[You decide to step in, at long last]

[Pause!]

[SFX: Well-behaved wolf pups]

[The Alpha looks at you in disbelief as the pups fall into line]

“W-Wha… How did you get them to behave with one command?”

[Pause]

“...You know how to talk to them with respect. You know how to… lead them.”

[Pause <3]

[He growls quietly… but he’s smiling]

“Maybe you should be Alpha, huh? Heh… Don’t push me, Shaman. You’ve proved your point.”

[Pause?]

[He lumbers to his feet with a groan, missing a patch of two of fur]

“I know you meant no disrespect, Shaman. I know I can be a hard-headed, stubborn, tradition and order loving asshole at times, but it’s only because I want the best for our pack. For… you.”

[Pause <3]

[He smiles that snide, tired grin]

“I do appreciate all that you do for the pack, Shaman. For me. Shame, really. The rare times we get along are the times that I enjoy the most in my retirement. Every day with you reminds me of the battles of the past. Makes me smile at my sword from time to time when I see where it’s hanging on the wall. Hm. I guess I appreciate you always starting shit with me, in a way.”

[...]

“What? I do not always start it! You’re starting it right now!”

[Pause?!]

“I do not always get defensive around you when you bring up a flaw of mine! Why do you even bring them up in the first place, hnh?! You push me constantly! You question my authority CONSTANTLY, as if you can’t trust me! What must I do to prove myself worthy to you?!”

[Pause…]

[He softens. A bit]

“You do it...Because you trust me enough to know you can speak openly. I… Rrgh, I’m sorry, Shaman. I… I don’t know why I’ve been… I never used to, but I’ve… I’ve just wanted you for myself so fucking desperately for so long now, I-”.

[He freezes. You freeze.]

[...]

“I-I… I meant… I meant I wanted to spend time with… To seek counsel in…”

[He shakes his head and growls under his breath]

“Rrgh, fuck it! I want you. I want you and it’s driving me FUCKING crazy and I know we can’t but I just-!”

[He snarls and throws his arms outward in frustration]

“I-!... Hhf… I need to go attend to other matters. And to think… We will talk later tonight, as we make our offerings to Lady Kyrenis…”

[...]

“Shaman.”

[Pause?]

[His eyes pierce through you. One fang is poking free from his lips as he studies you hungrily]

“...We can’t. I need you t-”.

[He swallows and exhales through his nose]

“...I need you at my side, no matter the pain that may come from this conversation. There is no pack without you. Understood?”

[...]

“Tell me. Say, ‘Yes, Alpha’. I need your submission and trust, my…ah…”

[He inhales and exhales, stoic as ever]

“...My guiding light.”

[He bows his head to you slightly and then takes his leave. You’re left to shake…and deal with some rowdy wolf pups]
