Context: In order to appease a being known as the Horned King, you were offered to become his bride. You were taken to a lovely cabin in the forest, expecting to meet this mythical, inhuman figure now calling himself your husband. But now that you've met him, you're not quite sure what to think.

[SFX: An animal running quickly]

Finally, FINALLY, the day is done! I cannot wait-

[SFX: More running]

I’m so excited! To see her! My beautiful bride, so excited to spend time with me! I cannot wait to see you, everything driving me wants to see you! I would do anything to-

[SFX: Brush parting and twigs snapping]

To see you… Wait… What is that smell? Smoke…? No, I sensed no danger, the birds are not fleeing, so the only thing it could be is-

[Pause]

Fire?! No! Hold on, my love! I will… Wait… Where is the fire?

[Pause]

“My bride! My bride, where are you?!”

[Pause!]

[His steps slow as he approaches the cabin]

“...My bride? Are you alright?”

[Pause!]

“Oh, thank the gods… Hm? You need to put on a blindfold…? What is…?”

[Pause]

“Oh, it will hide your eyes! Yes! Yes, that is… that is smart… Mmh, human ingenuity, yes. May I come in now?”

[Pause]

“One moment? Alright…”

“...Perhaps, now?”

[Pause]

“Thank you…”

[SFX: Footsteps crossing the threshold]

[You turn toward him, you think, and he exhales in relief]

“Good, the blindfold seems to serve its purpose. I smelled smoke and I got frightened! Are you alright, my darling?”

[Pause]

“Cook…ing? Ah! Yes, you said you intended to prepare the kill for us both. I assumed you meant deboning it, cleaning, all of that.”

[Pause]

“I see… Sit at the table?”

[Pause]

[SFX: A chair squeaking on wooden flooring]

“Here. You sit first, darling. I don’t want you stumbling about with that on.”

[SFX: Another chair squeaking]

[Pause <3]

[He sits, pausing as you thank him:]

“You do not need to thank me, my bride… I want to show you the same courtesy and human husband would. And smacking into tables hurts. A lot, hmhm. Now… What is this before me?”

[Pause]

“Roasted boar with rosemary? Who is this ‘Rosemary’ and why have you added their flesh to the boar?”

[Pause]

“Oh! Is that what humans call that plant?”

[Pause]

“...You have a beautiful laugh.”

[Pause <3]

“Eheh… Yes, yes, I am tasting the meal you prepared. My thanks.”

[You take a bite, pretty pleased with the result. You hear him rumble in response]

[Pause?]

“Mmh? No, no, ish dewicious!”

[Pause?]

“Was I growling? Apologies. I know human males tend to moan over delicious food, but growling is as close as I’ve gotten thus far. Mmph, this is so good, though! How did you get the flavor to change so significantly?”

[Pause]

“Herbs… Hm. Yes, Lamb swears by them.”

[Pause?]

“...Lamb is my twin, the aspect of all prey. Do not entertain him, even if he greets you directly. Despite his docile appearance, he uses guile and manipulation and poisons… He does love his poisons. Regardless, I forbid you from speaking to him.”

[...]

[His voice softens slightly]

“Please, forgive me for being stern. If something happened to you, if he hurt you, I… I’d have no way to rectify it. He kills me, I reform. I kill him, and he reforms. If he kills you, you’ll simply be… gone. I don’t know what I would do if…”

[Pause]

“Thank you for understanding. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your patience and understanding. I cannot even imagine how frightened you must have been when you initially came to this place.”

[Pause <3]

“I, um… appear to have cleaned my plate.”

[Pause]

“Oh, you look tired… Was preparing all of this taxing? Oh, my poor bride! Here… Let me get you to bed.”

[Pause]

“You feel cold? Ah, here, let’s sit in front of the fire for a bit. I put out a lot of heat in this form. You’ll be warmed up in no time.”

[Pause <3]

[SFX: Him standing and readjusting the Listener]

“Here we are. Rest against me, if you’d like. I am here.”

[Pause]

[He yawns]

“Mmh… Yes, the warmth is… somewhat intoxicating. Just going to close my eyes for… just a moment…”

[Long Pause (Brief Snooze)]

[You fell asleep shortly after he seemed to, given the low snoring. He wakes before you, this time]

[Pause]

“...Nuh? Did I fall asleep? That’s… unusual. But where is..?”

[Pause]

[His breath hitches for a moment as he spots you]

S-She-! She’s resting in my lap… Oh no… I-I… My love, sleeping prey is so easy to take down. No… No, no, no, come now, what would a human do?

[SFX: His form shifting slightly as he moves]

[Even though you’re mostly asleep, you can feel his knuckle trace down your cheek and neck]

Gentle… Gentle. Just stroke your knuckle down her cheek and neck. Oh… You have such beautiful skin, my darling… It baffles me why they would send someone so sweet to satiate my requests, so very pure and kind…

[Pause]

…The meal you cooked for us to share… I treasure it. I am used to unflavored meats, basked in their own unique flavors, but you made it taste entirely different. Like it was meant for more than just sustenance. Like you made it for me as a reward for my efforts.

[Pause]

“...I love you.”

[Pause]

[He tenses as you shift and adjust]

“A-Ah… I’m sorry, go back to sleep. All is well…”

[Pause…?]

“Am I…staying the night? Darling, I can’t… I still don’t look ‘right’. My eyes shift back and forth between spider and wolf, I alternate between walking on twos to running on fours. I look… scary. Like the drawings, your children drew of me back in your village.”

[Pause]

“...You don’t mind?”

[Pause]

“But you want me to be comfortable with you.”

[Pause]

“...Thank you, my bride. Your consideration is more than I ever expected. I still cannot stay the night. The hunt needs me, but… but I am certain that, in time, I shall have more time to see you. I’m just sorry you feel so lonely…”

[Pause]

…I have to make her happy. I cannot stand those little noises of sadness

[Pause]

“I will find things to please you, my bride, I promise. You are never not on my mind.”

[...]

“Darling?”

[...]

She’s asleep… Oh, look at how peaceful… Here, sweetling, let’s get you to bed.

[SFX: The bed shifting and covers being placed]

[He lies you down and covers you up while you sleep. His lips brush your forehead briefly before he takes his leave]

A little kiss for your forehead… There we are. I will see you tomorrow night, my bride. And, somehow, I will see you happy. That, I promise.

[SFX: Footsteps hurrying off, from twos to fours]
